Can someone summerize these fighting styles for me?

Ok...LC5 with a cruiser is as far in STO as personal game time has allowed me to tred.....=p

Game rocks so far BTW!

I am getting the idea from diffrent threads i have read that the 3 ship types do not fight the same.

Can someone (who has really flown all 3) summerize how each ship class type operates in combat?

I have no idea at all how science vessels fight. And I hopeing escorts actually function like dog space fighters.

Thanks =)

I'd check in the forums about the ship types rather than the general chatter forum.

I'm a KDF player, so I can't tell you exactly how a Science Vessel plays... since we don't have any with the Klingons. The others I'll say this:

ESCORTS - Maneuverability and damage output. Emphasis on Tactical BOff abilities. As sturdy as a wet paper bag.
CRUISERS - Compared to Escorts, sluggish and lower firepower. Emphasis on Engineer BOff abilities. Very tough, especially in a team environment with players that support you.
SCIENCE - From what I've seen facing them, shields are very tough, due to strong emphasis on Science BOff abilities. They fall in the middle between CRS & ESC, but IMO, they can be deceptively tough to bring down. A properly outfitted + skill based Science vessel can detect cloaked ships.

I've captained both cruisers and science vessels (on my way to Earth Space Dock to buy my escort) and the difference between cruisers and science vessels are:

    * Cruisers are generally larger, have mroe crew and have much stronger hull plating than any oher ship class to absorb more damage when their sheilds fail. Cruisers also have more engineering consoles, and consoles of higher rank than ensign, theirfor taking advantage of promoted Bridge Officer skills.

    * Science vessels have the ability to target enemy sub systems, draining power (making them less effective) or disabling them completely for a short time. Basically with a science vessel you can target the enemy's engines, auxilery, shields or weapons and potentially disable them for a short time, at the very least making them less effective for the same time period. Science vessels have more science consoles and science consoles of higher raink, to take advantage of promoted Bridge Officer skills. They also have superior shields to any other class.

That's all I have personal experience in so far. From what I know, Escort class ships are the most manuverable (fastest turn speed), the only class that can mount cannons (the Miranda class starter ship cheats!) and has more tactical consoles and higher ranked consoles, to take advantage of promoted Bridge Officer skills.

    Hope that helps.

    Okeh, I'll bite...

ESCORTS: Old-style space-sim dogfighter. Very similar in play to those old games, focus is on front DPS. Intended to use Tac officers to enahnce damage output, synergizes well with either Engineer or Tac captains. Science - haven't tried so can't say. Maneuverability and DPS define this class - they can use the heavy-hitting narrow-arc weapons and have the nameuverability to aim them. Get less maneuverable as they get bigger, so turrets become more and more of a necessity as you advance (they add a fair beit of frontward DPS as well as deal well with smaller ships).

CRUISERS have more of a "tank" mentality, in the MILITARY not the MMO sense. Like a real-life tank, you lack maneuverability, so you use fields of fire to kill your foes and your Engineering emphasis to keep you alive when doing so. Narrow-arc weapons are your enemy in a Cruiser - you don't have the maneuverability to take advantage of 'em. You have better shields and armor than a Escort, so can take more...with your Engineering abilities to help along the way. You don't have a lot of options in terms of DPS enhancers unless you have a Tac captain..you take a hit in keep-alive abilities to enhance your DPS. Consider your fields of fire to be similar to a tank's turret and overlap your weapons coverage accordingly.. Turrets may sound ideal here but they are NOT - turrets come into their own when you have the ability Cannons: Rapid Fire, which it'll be unlikely that you have in a cruiser. They ESPECIALLY come into their own when youhave the skill twice, and can chain it...not possible in a Cruiser.

SCIENCE vessels share much of the same issues Cruisers do - ther emphasis is on Science, and Science is all about buffing others/debuffing your enemy. In the original design, Science had heavy shields because debuffs were seen as weaker than Engineering repairs or tac buffs - then some Science abilities were introduced that you could chain - either by having one officer have multiple levels in the ability, or having TWO officers with the same ability. Those abilities basically neutralize a single opponent permanently, giving the Science ship time to kill that opponent any way they feel they can. While this is of limited use against frigate-sized enemies (Birds of Prey, etc) that fly in groups of three, against bigger ships it's devestating. Some of those bigger ships just stop everything when hit with that ability, making them sitting ducks. Other than that, Science tactics are the same as Cruisers, save fior debuffing your foes to survive, and depending on your enhanced shield to survive multiple-ship encounters.

Hope that gives you a idea, anyway - I fly Escorts myself mostly because I like the playstyle - biut I have flown both cruisers (natch - EVERYBODY flies one, and the playstyle doesn't change as you advance in ranks), and I flew Science ships in beta.
