A thread about the upside of STO

There's a lot of hate that gets levelled at the developers, but I think it's kind of excessive. The developers actually seem to have done a really, really good job. For an MMO launch, this is basically flawless. Crash bugs are rare. Servers seem to have really good uptime now, and queues haven't been around since week 1. The game also looks fantastic and runs way smoother than it seems like it should for how good it looks. I've found the grand total of 3 broken quests (most established MMOs have more than that).

Seems to me the developers have actually done a phenomenal job compared to most MMO developers.

The real problem is whoever dictates gameplay and game balance. The developers likely have no say. Even the gameplay/balance people did a pretty good job on the basics (SFC2 in space MMO is a damn good idea, and BOs work well to give a good feel of progression). The mass-effect style ground combat is a good idea too. And the conjunction of the two for more varied gameplay was a fantastic idea. But beyond the basics, things get a bit ugly. Ground combat feels completely wrong. Ship combat starts being more about abusing stacked abilities than any sort of tactics or SFC-esque gameplay at higher tiers. Cruisers can't turn. Shields can be rendered meaningless by dual cannons, and the best strategy for BOPs/escorts is to barely move at all. Non-self-counterable VM was a horrifically bad oversight.

So... there's good, and there's bad. But I see a lot of hate being leveled at the wrong people for the wrong reasons, in ways that are often complete fabrications or overreactions to a MMO norm.

No, see... I characterize all points of the game; both good and bad. This neither makes me a fanboy or a hater, which is why this post exists.

Of course what it'll probably accomplish is getting flamed by everyone, but maybe cryptic will read it.

Thats why I said what I said. I'm neither. But I'll troll both. :D Mostly because these types of posts accomplish nothing. So.... might as well have fun with them.

Actually, that's some of the biggest points the devs have say in, just as an FYI. Go check out the history of what Cryptic has done with new and established IPs (CoH [new] and CO [established]) They have completely overhauled both at times...on their own. They set their formulas for everything and how things play.

Simply because somebody changed things doesn't mean the software programmers were responsible for what was changed. Your assertion isn't supported by your post in any real way.
