It's very difficult to review MMOs because of the time involved to get a good view of a good majority of the content, not to mention MMOs tend to change drastically over a very short period of time thanks to teams of developers being kept on retinue to generate and polish over new content.
Nonetheless, STO does suffer a lot of the problems these review sites mentioned, namely lack of content, lack of polish, and completely broken player progression system.
Still, the game is changing, and new content/patches are being introduced on a regular basis, and that, at least, shows a promising future for STO.
In the end, though, the only question you really have to ask yourself is "Does the pleasure of flying around in a galaxy class cruiser blasting romulans trump the lack of content and polish?" If yes, then you'll probably find STO enjoyable, like I do. If not, then you should move on, and maybe check back in half a year or so.
Only six reviews, two of them by Eurogamer. Eurogamer, the ones who did a preview by a guy who played the tutorial in closed beta, and said the whole game is garbage.
Either way, 65 isn't too bad for a just-launched MMO. It's too bad that most review sites don't come back to an MMO at three months or six months post-launch.
Note: Most of the good game reviewing sites were waiting to give their reviews until they actually played it for a while. Based on the preliminary reviews from some of these sites, I'm expecting the Average score to go up a bit.
Personally, I'd give the game a 7.5/10. Could be better, but at least there's a solid foundation to improve upon.
But one thing's for sure, I'm having boatloads of fun with my Intrepid.

Yeah, I personally would give it a solid 7, right now, while simultaneously recommending it to all of my friends. I'd then come back to give it a number in about six months.
How much of the gaming public listens to reviewers?
I dont. If I hear about a game I wanna play, I try it, THEN I go see what other people think about it. I dont let other people decide what games Im gonna play lol

lol id like to see the reviews for WoW at this part of its launch
dunno though 6.7 out of 10 from the 208 fan reviews. It would be MUCH worse if the poll were done here, if you judge by the trolls

Some sites i listen to and some i know are bought with advertising dollars and i avoid them like the plauge.

You know if you toss out the poorly written/uninformed eurogamer reviews, and take into account metacritic scored a c+ as a 59, STO is actually getting in the upper 70s. Not too bad really.
1st I want to say that WoW was much better on release, I'm not arguing that. But gamespot is the worst of the popular review sites, by far. They got paid for that review, they do it on a regular basis. Their "reviews" means little at best.
Subpar to average is Cryptic's bread and butter. Im not really sure what people were honestly expecting knowing that the game is built upon the same cookie cutter multiplayer engine as Champions Online..
If you want depth , content , consistancy , or balance your in the wrong place because those are things Cryptic has NEVER delivered. There is only one reason to play this game.... Its Star Trek... dont expect anything beyond that.

I "finished" the game in under 5 days /played. That's not too hard to get an opinion going from. And unlike what many thing, i actually did not go through just playing defense missions. I did explore, defense and patrol missions until story line came up then did that, then back to the others to keep a good mix going. It was just super easy to level...and when I max'd out, there was nothing to do. PVP is broken and no klingons are in the queues.
Just saying, there are how many of these game review sites...if I havent heard of them myself, and Metacritic is one of them, then I could care less what their review is. Besides, we, the players, are the ultimate reviewers. Not some unknown person claiming to have an unbiased opinion on a game they only played for a little while before putting out ink on it.
Personally I would give the game a 6.5 at launch, but after some fixes and TLC (more is still needed) its a good 7 now in my book. I have high expectations for this title and expect to be able to increase my personal rating over the next year (by the first year anniversary at the latest!). Yes, I am being overly patient for selfish reasons - I am a lifer! ;p

I'm the same as you. I don't really pay that much attention to game reviews. If I see a game that looks cool, I buy it.
6/10 is far more than fair. I would more than likely give it a 5/10 for lack of any serious crafting and endgame that is utterly dependant on people giving them "moar monay" in sales for dev and of course time.
I don't want endgame 6 months later or PVP that is completely arena based. What happened cryptic?

How is endgame dependent on us giving them "more money?"
I think I would like to categorize what exactly people feel...
- Highly experienced MMO players: Say the game is trash. Are unimpressed with the downtimes. Some are trekkies, but others aren't. Will complain with even the slightest mistake because "this is a product that we are paying for and we deserve better".
- In the middle MMO players: Have played a few MMOs, realize that this is a new MMO and that there is a LOT of time until a conclusion can be made. Realizes that mistakes happen within the first few weeks of launch and that the product can't be perfect without trial and error of the fanbase.
- Newbies to MMO: This game is the best because it involves Star Trek. No MMO has been made with Star Trek before and therefore are willing to accept the game for whatever it is. Also consider the game extremely fun no matter how repetitive because they don't know how to compare it to other MMOs.
To be honest, I fit in the middle. I think most of the "complainers" on this forum are in the highly experienced MMO category. Most of the people who are newbies are playing the game right now not browsing the forums.
I realize we pay for a product. However, when a piece of equipment goes down at the gym (which I pay high dollar for) you have to understand that nothing is perfect. If you are going to join a new gym, a lot will go wrong in the beginning because it is new. Expectations are way to high for this game to be perfect. Perhaps a better analysis can take place in a few months, right?
THIS is NOT true lol I joined WoW in Feb of launch year, and even then it was pretty horrible so far as lag and bugs and things
I'm loving STO, but WoW was better on release and we both know it. I started on release too, there were problems but it was a much bigger, more polished experience. STO is pretty basic in a lot of ways, but it's fun to play so it's ok.
For example, WoW at least had 5 man dungeons and then went on to raids. STO has basic questing and will eventually go on to 5 mans. It's kind of a step behind.
I predicted 60, I'm surprised the game has 65. Too bad the fanbois are too busy bashing the haters and Bioware to help and find ideas to improve the game.
Just saying, there are how many of these game review sites...if I havent heard of them myself, and Metacritic is one of them, then I could care less what their review is.
Metacritic doesn't do reviews, they give aggregate numbers. They collect all of the reviews of other sites and give averages, with more established and respected sources being weighted more heavily.
As a rule Metacritic is viewed as incredibly important within the industry, and it's actually come to light that some publishers offer bonuses based on Metacritic scores.

Atari is all about short term profits and does give a damn about their customers.

The eurogamer ones were rushed out and if you read them the guy doesn't know squat about MMOs. Just saying.
Also, 1up gave it a C+ but the meta critic counts that as a 59? Huh?
Personally, I'd give the game a 7.5/10. Could be better, but at least there's a solid foundation to improve upon.

A LOT of room for improvement which I'm really looking forward to.

6 days after launch Gamespot gave it a 9.5 out of 10

So yeah reviews are just opinion of one person who are made of flesh and blood just like us. I any ways always love what critics hate and vice versa.

Yep, just wanted to let people know that info is very subjective in this case.
"Some stability issues."
Talk about understatement.
I don't want endgame 6 months later or PVP that is completely arena based. What happened cryptic?
HMM I could make some really bad dirty jokes, about the editors, and the BLIZZ devs, but I will refrain from doing that because it mite get me banned.

His post is beyond clueless, don't worry about it.

Heck, I started playing WoW in 2006, and there were still problems even after all that time. WoW is not everything it's cracked out to be.
Maybe they are "lifetime subscribers" there! ;p
Anyhow, that is a bit to high for now...okay a little more than a bit. But one day I am expecting the game to really be a 9.5/10.
