"We are aware of this issue ..." Yeah, we too.

You know, my girlfriend does not play online games, actually no computer games at all. So she does not know anything about patches, maintenance, downtime, lag or such.
But even she is mildly impressed about the amount of downtime meanwhile, since I tell her at least once, sometimes twice a day, that I can't play again.
"Is this normal?" Well, no.

I played a lot of online games during the last twelve years, even another Cryptic one. But I can honestly say - and may Zeus smite my tribble with lightning, if it is not true - that I never experienced such an unstable server ever, in any game, for such an extended duration.
Even the release of Kunark in EQ was a cake-walk compared to what we have here since open beta.

So when I read again and again, that "we are aware of this issue ...", I can not other but think, that we, the players, are very aware of this issue too.
For sure we noticed that the game becomes close to unplayable in the evening, that the server crashes an ungodly amount of times and that it needs a lot of (seemingly not really worth it) maintenance.

Will it ever be fixed? Servers added?
Or do you just wait, till the "free" month, that came with the game, runs out, and due to many leaving players everything will run smoother?
I really like to know.

I came to STO together with four friends, and not one of us is sure yet, if he will stay after the first month because of the severe stability isssues.

So, my point is: fix the darned server already omg.

I am sure it is a massive concern for Cryptic, as Server stability is a fundamental requirement for an MMO. And should not be an issue really. So for it to be an issue with STOL is a bit embrassing and something they will look to fix asap.

Well I'm not experiencing all this downtime, how do you explain that?

Other than the usual maintenence, I have not seen any other downtime, so there must be other reasons.

Whoa! You guys continue to blow away all our expectations. We had so many people playing Star Trek this weekend... It's incredible! Of course, whenever we break population records, we find more room for improvement, as well.

We had some issues this weekend that brought the servers down a couple times. This was due, in large part, to lots of people claiming items from the C-Store and an unrelated bug on the back-end. We've been working all weekend to sort these issues out and we should have some fixes rolled out later today.

We're continuing to work on server performance and stability, too. We're constantly squeezing more and more out of every little bit of processor power we have.

These fixes will go a long way in better preparing us for the inevitable rush tomorrow and this coming weekend. Thanks for bearing with us during this time.

I know this weekend was rough, but be sure that the team here at Cryptic is entirely focused on getting any issue we find resolved and fixed as soon as possible.

    Thanks again for your patience.

Hum... This quote is in great part also true for today:)

very sneaky plow on cryptics part the old "server is undergoing mainteance" trick.

all these threads about the downtime dont seem to realize.....

that this is a GOOD sign !!!

the servers are being challenged during the weekends when the school kids and 9to5ers have available time........ devs are trying to keep them up, and working hard to compensate....the player numbers are just through the roof ATM.

the masses amounts of people logging on these pas weekends has been HUGE !!

I'm actually glad to see it !!!

I wonder what the player base actually is ? I bet it's a LOT more than we think.

I can live with it...... I play more during off peak hours in the workweek anyway...nad the servers arent taxed then.

got any proof to back up your claim ?

how can you tell a difference between a crash and a shut-down ?

    You don't understand -

The Star Trek Offline servers are located on Gilligan's Island, they are made of coconuts, and are maintained by 1 guy who has a PhD in Agricultural Engineering. All the "good" servers were taken, even the ones in New Jersey.

Maintenance is SCHEDULED on weekends - because the folks that do software maintenance have real jobs and their only available on weekends and holidays.

So give poor ol' Cryptic a break.

I think it's fair to call "Unexpected Downtime" a server crash.

I understand the frustration. I work a job with an odd schedule of both daytime and evenings. There are many times I would have a certain morning off and look forward to playing City of Heroes and the game would be down.

ALso, Cryptic at one point wanted to make CoHs a one server shard or were toying with the idea. They had a poll go out to the players to see if they were interested. So this one shard idea is both to keep a great population so people are not stuck on a server that has no one playing.

Having to add capacity to the game because it is overwhelmed is great. Means people are playing the game. I just hope it does not have the mass exodus of players like Conan, Aion, and Champions did.

Bit silly to schedule downtime, when your customers have the most free time to play...

Well, for example now the servers are down. Like almost exactly 24 hours ago, they also crashed around 9pm CET. Then they were down today midday (for maintenance on Sunday), came back up and crashed good 45 minutes later.
I think it is safe to say, that this is no fine example of server stability.

Since the official lauch i havnt played for one whole day yet without one of the following happening:

    1) 'Unscheduled Maintenance' - AKA Server crash
    2) 'you have been disconnected from the server' - during a mission causing at least 30mins of lost gameplay
    3) ''you have been disconencted from the server', followed by 'you are 1197 in a queue of 1197' - causing at least 1hr of missed gameplay
    4) ''you have been disconencted from the server', followed by 'you are 1197 in a queue of 1197' ...followed by 30mins of misison time...followed by...'you have been disconnected from the server.....rince and repeat. - Causing several hours of lost gameplay & several dents in various items in my office

....I think im at the point where if i went a whole evening with ONLY the 'server not responding' messege i would be absolutly AMAZED.

I'm just not as convinced as you seem to be, that they really care that much. Cryptic seems to always have taken a "laze fair" attitude towards their games, and I've seen nothing different here.

You never see them apologize, you never see the moderators get out ahead of the "the server is down again" threads. They only seem to be buying the hardware they absolutely have to buy, including not buying the hardware for these forums that get slammed every time the server goes down.

I just don't think its "catastrophe" to them that you think it is. On the contrary, I think the game is 10 times more successful than they anticipated, and don't really care if they get the early drop off they know is coming at the end of the 30 days anyway.

They said from day 1 that 100K subscriptions would make them happy ... and I suspect they have already surpassed that, and are already on to their mystery game.

Yes, the front line Devs are still working things out, and yes there are patches coming ... but that's just from the maintenance team that will be here forever until the game closes ... that's not Zinc (who has been amazingly absent since launch) and its not the upper management.

Sooo because your Girlfriend hasn't a clue about Computer Games, it must be right .... where's the logic in that ???? Can"t find it sorry !!! Sure it"s annoying, sure i want to play too but every new MMO has this issue, and thats actually not a bad launch .... i played Aion a few months ago when you think THIS is awful ....

And well hate to break it to you "Well this is normal for any new MMO"
