STO - made by players

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
why is it we the players can clearly see what would make STO great but its not how it was made.

- Open world PvP
- Taking and holding Planets
- space stations
- big planet battles
- zone with ownership flucuation (like planetside)
- scanning derelect / killed ships for salvagable loot

I was REALLY hanging for STO to come out - waited 2 years for this game, and its been made by people who don't seem to play MMO's

Why is it so clear to the player base what would make a great MMO, but no company ever makes that MMO

It's too much work. And too much of a [monetary] risk for the investors/publisher.

Eve has most of the items on your list.

If the game had Open World PvP I'd never had purchased it; nor if the only thing I did in life was killing things for salvage. That's not Star Trek. That's Eve.

Yeah, except in Eve you can spend many real-world days doing nothing but mining ore or camping hotspots. How many people would be excited to play STO if you had to sit 3 real-world days in the Admiral's office waiting to get your Promotion mission? :)

I'd settle for actual server stability and the unimpeded ability to log in.

Also, @Zaxo: if you've been waiting for the game for two years, why does your fourm info state you joined the forums in Feb 2010? Two years or two weeks? If you'd been following the game for that long you would have known not to expect anything you listed above. Further, everything you listed is a feature either found in, or soon to be found in EVE Online. (I think Zaxo is an EVE fanboy masquerading as an STO player.)

maybe there is some sort of middle ground between STO and EVE that would be enjoyable, because I personally think both are poor when you consider what kind of game could have been made. STO = reasonably fun for the moment but very little depth. Eve = 0 fun and a triple overdose of depth. So effectively im saying they're both bad rather than taking sides

You know it is possible to have pvp as well as other stuff in a game at the same time, right? Or is it a case of 'they are having fun, stop it at once!!!'

To be fair Cryptic were very clear about the game they were making, maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea, but they did a lot to appeal to most players.

What you describe is EvE meets Planetside with a ST skin. While personally i find this a fun proposition, it's not going to be for everyone and i'll bet more people prefer to pve than pvp.

I ment in context of open world PvP. PvP in general, sure, but not open world.

How hard would it be to have a zone with a few planets in that fleets could fight over? Carebears could still scan flowers and stuff, while pvpers are busy shooting each other. Everybody happy.

that sounds great in theory but in practice it would never work. a few people have mentioned eve, yet for every person that loves eve there is another that hates it, and we would end up right back at the start.

for every person that wants one server, another wants multiple servers
for everybody that wants more pvp, another person hates it
for everybody that says the game is too short, another thinks its spot on

you can never make the perfect player base mmo as the player base cant even agree on what they want

Obviously it would be possible to have a pvp zone that carebears dont go into. but thats not good enough, is it? You want no pvp, because other people may have fun that you cant take part in.

I dont like crafting, but do you hear me argue that crafting should be taken out of the game? No you don't. And that's because I understand other people like different thing.

So why dont you stop putting the boot into pvp and let other people have a game they enjoy?

errr, is that what i said?
my point was to the OP that you can never make a perfect mmo based on what players want because everybody is different, like you said

i made one comment about some people like pvp and some dont.
i love pvp, and i love open zones in the other games ive played and i never said that i did not like it or that it should be taken out

    im really enjoying this game

perhaps you should actually read my post before slating me on something i never said

The obvious answer is we do not hold the purse strings for devolopment. If we did we would probably be as cheap as the execs at cryptic.

Well, if you really want it made by players then look into the following:

Is Cryptic a public company of which shares can be purchased on the stock market?

Start your own organization getting players to buy stock in the company. Even if it is only 1 share. Band all the players who own stock together, and start making demands.
