This Game is unplayable.....

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Ok im not much for complaining but this is ridiculous ..

I am finding this game unplayable for the following reasons ..

1. Cant even log in when the server is UP. All that happens is it stays at retrieving chars till it disconnects you. This has been happening constantly now .. and Pi$$ing me off a bit.

2. When you FINALLY log in .. the server is unresponsive between map transitions .. you sit there for like 5 minutes waiting on the area to log .. not a great gameplay ploy by Cryptic .

3. You get disconnected for no reason or the server crashes mid game ..

4. populated ground missions are sooooo laggy its like watching Jerk-a-vision..

Now I paid good money to actually play a game .. and it looks like all cryptic are doing it taking the money and TRIBBLE us.

It it continues .. thiere must be something in the terms that say .. If the game is unplayable .. get you fraking money back.

Anyway rant over .. just wanted to know if I was alone in this feeling ..

it must be your rig , apart from not being able to log in because of todays maintenance this game runs pretty darn smooth for me.

I can't really complain about the server going down for a scheduled maint.

I don't have a single one of those problems. Does your system meet the published minimum specifications? Are your drivers up to date? Have you tried using the Tech Support forum to seek help with your issues?

I don't have any of those problems, the game runs very smooth on my PC, maybe it's time to move on to a better rig or if you have a good rig check that there is nothing wrong with it.

This may be your video drivers. I've found that when I experience this, if I reset my SLI configuration, it clears it up making it smooth as silk again. I'm not sure how to reset this if you don't have SLI, maybe just change your resolution on your desktop real quick and then back again. Something is happening here that only takes a short reset of the video system to clear up. Cryptic needs to work with the video card companies to find out why this game is causing this stuttering issue.

Are you using an internet proxy? I have heard people using on cannot access the game. I have no connection problems and no problems swithing maps. The game has been smooth for me.

    My computer specs =

    2.2 AMD Athlon processor
    1G Memory
    512MB ATI graphics card

I am not near the min specs and I don't have a single one of your problems. I have had 4 problems since launch (2x long loadtime on first zone in & 2x computer locking up tonite while zoning). Other then those 4 times, the game runs like champ. Must be something on your end.

    No, I don't.

As a fairly well established member of the community, I have none of these problems. I think maybe the older members have passed the torch of responsibility when it comes to answering these repetitive cheese and whine posts by passing them up completely.

No information on the OPs video card, processor, etc. makes it hard to be helpful. The most anyone with a positive experience in game can do is cheerlead.

Edit: the forum is not an accurate evaluation of the state of the game; it is filled by those with issues while many are in game playing instead of being here. Even then, there are those who claim our positive experience does not exist and must be attributed to ghost accounts from the devs.

The zoning disconnects sound like you're using the EU proxy, ditch it until it's fixed. Can't say I've had any issues other than bugs and server down time in the middle of the day on sunday.

    same smooth here for me.

    1. check harddrive speed. slow drives can cause texture loading stuff
    2. update all drivers. sound, motherboard, gpu etc..
    3.lower settings.
    4. buy new computer. a quadcore.

Actually the OP was complaining about jerky behavior on the ground missions, not the rubber band effect in space. Which, at immediate launch I did notice a little bit of lag when a ground mission would first load up. However, I haven't noticed that since the patch last Thursday.

Of course it must be some evil, Cryptic conspiracy, and really not a problem on the user end.

I've never had any of the problems people complain about. No lag, can always log in (if server is up), never disconnected.

I get lots of odd behavior on the ground from the NPC, running sideways, backwards, "moonwalking" Michael Jackson style, sliding forward, jumping off of cliffs, standing on walls....

could that be video card related?

Well, i've experienced most of the OP's problems, and I'm pretty damned certain my 'rig' as you call it is well above minimum spec, drivers up to date, etc....

With regards to jerky ground play and rubberbanding in space....

Funny how I've only ever experienced these behaviours/problems in MMO's (not just STO) if these are 'rig' problems...
The only common factor between the MMO's I've seen it in is overloaded servers (or speculation of overloaded servers) - IE, it doesn't happen in relatively low population times/areas and does in high population times/areas.

I'm very glad to hear that you haven't experienced problems, but judging by the very high number of posts on this forum from people that appear to have similar problems, I'd say the circumstancial evidence at leasts points towards there being issues with the game.

only real issue ive seen is the
    unable to connect to server

not sure if thats exactly what it says but its red writting at top of load screen when zoning, i just leave it loading and usually takes a min but loads fine :D

Welcome to Star Trek Offline - the support group for STOaholics. We meet regularly - whenever STO is offline.

Seriously, I don't have Jerkavision effects and my graphics card is well below specs (Radeon X1250). You may need to adjust your video options.

It does seem like the Gilligan's Island coconut servers are weak, and that Cryptic is borderline incompetent - SCHEDULED maintenance on weekends?

Scheduled maintenance happens anytime during the initial month or two after launch. The sonner you learn server tech, the sooner you can post about something you "know".

take wow. They took 3/4 of their servers down a day ago for 6 hours at peak hours. And they supposedly use state of the art tech. riiight.

What part of server maintenence do you guys not understand?

Every single MMO does this, but for some reason you dont think this one should? Very strange!!

A lot of Junior members post, maybe when, oh say I'm having my coffee, before I start playing? I don't work for Cryptic. Being a Senior member isn't really a title I care about. It doesn't give anyone 'cred' to live on a game forum.

My son and I played 8 straight hours last evening, a few screens of "Server Not Responding" which seems to occur when switching from space to ground combat. It recovered quickly each time. I love it when the wife is out of town for the weekend and I get to spend time with my son - we were out all day and after dinner he wanted to play some STO and we had so much fun.

Both of us had a blast! But then, I actually have computers from this century.

Go buy a video card. Yeah, unlike World of Borecraft, you do actually need a good vid card for this game.

Seriously... I have a pretty basic rig that's a few years old (for example: 256MB ATI 3600 series) on crappy ATT DSL and have none of these problems. This game runs great.

    Correct. Let's list them:
    1. Cant even log in when the server is UP. All that happens is it stays at retrieving chars till it disconnects you. This has been happening constantly now .. and Pi$$ing me off a bit.

Never happens to me. If the server is up, I have no problem logging in.
    2. When you FINALLY log in .. the server is unresponsive between map transitions .. you sit there for like 5 minutes waiting on the area to log .. not a great gameplay ploy by Cryptic .

Never happens to me unless my internet crashes (Bright House, it happens a couple of times a night) or I'm transitioning during a server crash.
    3. You get disconnected for no reason or the server crashes mid game ..

I never get disconnected for no reason. The server has crashed a time or two, but his claim is that this stuff is happening to him every single time he plays. I don't get server crashes every single time I play.
    4. populated ground missions are sooooo laggy its like watching Jerk-a-vision..

Haven't had this problem since Closed Beta, when Nvidia fixed their buggy video drivers that were causing it.

So, yeah; I don't have any of the problems he's having, that he says are happening to everybody constantly. I'm running the same code he is, connecting to the same server cluster.

OP needs to ensure his system meets minimum specs, clean off any viruses and malware, make sure his video drivers are updated, make sure his system has adequate power and cooling and that those components are functioning properly (flaky power, for instance, can cause some of the symptoms he's seeing), and make sure to defrag after patching because Cryptic games are sometimes subject to very long load times that result in timeouts if the files are heavily fragmented. Windows defrag saying your system doesn't need defragging based on total system percentage of fragmentation doesn't cut it; you can have a system that has a low overall percentage of fragmentation but a couple of Cryptic pigg files that have 900+ fragments each.
