Why? You're not going to try and say the server is so unstable because its a worldwide server or something are you?
Personally, I prefer it this way. But there are pros and cons.
The pros are that there are many more players online than would otherwise be the case. I for one don't want to be restricted to only playing with people in the same general time region as me.
The cons are that scheduled maintenance is always going to affect one region of players more than others. It seems to me that it affects Europeans the worst in the current slot of 11am - 1pm GMT on Sundays.
Can anyone point me to a thread discussing why Cryptic went with the one, global server idea?
Cant direct to a thread, but iirc Cryptic only expected 200,000 subscribers so a single global server is the most cost efficient way to handle relatively few MMO accounts. I dont think anyone could have predicted that STO would become the #1 selling game in the UK this week, which accounts for more than half the expected subscriptions alone.
Cryptic likes the idea that every player in the game can play with any other player in the game rather then forcing them to play only in their "group:" Europeans with EUs, Oceanics with Asians, etc. It's not a bad idea, it's just that demand for STO has been higher then anticipated - the anticipater needs to be fired.
