I live in Germany, received my copy on Saturday 1pm from UK. After installing the game it downloaded a patch which took another 3 hours with 50 kb/s on an 16 mb/s line. Then I logged in the first time and played for 3 hours, before I made a break and considered playing later this evening and in the night.
Well and then the servers were down for the rest of the evening. Perfect...
Today I logged in at morning and was able to create a new character and play for 2 mins. Since then the servers are down for "scheduled maint". It is 2:30pm now, the servers are "up", but when I login the screen freezes when the characters are loaded.
That is not what I expected from the game. I planned to enjoy the game this WE and up to now I had 3 hours in the game. Over the week I do not have that much time to play. And reading the forum about reaching the max. in 50 hours of play time and having seen the quests repeat in that short play time of mine I wonder whether I will play it for more than 1 month.
I am into adventuring and not into PVP and I love playing together with other ppl. I want to get to know a huge new world step by step. But in STO I did not speak a single word with any other player while playing. I said hello in every instance, but never ever did anyone reply. And this zooming from one point to the next does not create the vision of continuous space I can explore.
That is not what I call a MMO and I wonder where the RPG part is hiding. :-)

how fast is your connection? seems like your upload tube is slow.... it didnt take hardly any time at all to grab client here.
as to the chattting? are you talking in zone chat to say hi? lol...... I for example have had zone chat turned off since start.... and Im sure a lot of others do as well...becasue of idiot messages and gold spam posts etc...
what you need is a fleet that will chum around with you....check the forums for fleet recruitment, and find a group of people that have similar interests in gaming style, and go from there.
dont rely on zone chat for intellectual conversation....or even civil responses to be matter of fact.
it's just the way it is.... in every open chat system.

As I wrote i have a 16 mbit/s dsl line which surely is not "slow". :-) Just made a speed test: 1296 KB/s D/L, 123.9 KB/s U/L, 34ms ping. But the client downloaded the patch with 30-100 KB/s. I am not speaking about downloading the client from a web site.
I turned off zone chat after 15 minutes. :-) But I guess the other players in my instance can read what I write in local, correct? And I said hello in local.

I gotta admit... If I saw hello in "local"... I wouldnt know who it was from let alone who it was directed to....
I honestly can say I would not have replied as well..... not to be a dink....but there is a lot of input stimuli going on in-game..... so it would have a REALLY low priority to me.
however, an ingame "tell" I probably WOULD reply to.
the social aspect of gaming is changing ( dunno if that is the correct word or not ).
chat isnt just typing anymore..... the more social aspects of MMO's are geared toward voice nowadays.... and I think a lot of people just ignore chat anymore, becasue actually talking in vent or teamspeak is so much more personal and convenient...... and eases the amount of keyboard interactions, that can be put towards actually piloting your ship, etc...
