I am wondering, for what reason could the Horizon class ship have the blue energy field around its ball shaped saucer? I mean no other federation ship has something like that and it does not look very useful. Whatever could that thing be for?
I'd guess it would be for research or experiments involving the external elements (solar radiation, etc) while being able to filter out the harmful or unwanted stuff. Unfortunately the graphics make it look like nothing is behind the force fields. But the pattern looks the same as what is used for the terraform shielding on planets in the game.
Remember the Star Trek movie where they rescue the whales? Well now they can't let the whales go extinct again so every captain of a science vessel of the Horizon class gets their own fishtank with a few whales in it. So if there is another alien probe coming to look for whales they have them ready for presentation.
p.s.
That shielding graphic is lifted directly from CO where they used it for one of their powersets.

ROFL, I agree with this statement. Save the whales! Send them to SPACE!
My best guess would be that if you've watched many space faring shows . These Glass like chambers usually have something to do with Terraforming / Plant growth / Animal habits . But it is just a guess.... Maybe its just for the view .:D
I'm surprised at the 'fanatical keepers of the canon' not getting their knickers twisted about this one.
The 'Horizon class' in STO is nothing of the sort.
The Horizon class was from TOS timeline and was a light cruiser ( if memory serves ) and the USS Constellation started out life as an Horizon class before being re-fitted as a Constitution heavy cruiser.
The ship in STO named 'Horizon class' appears to be based upon the USS Horizon, which was not an Horizon class at all but a Daedelus class explorer/patrol vessel
Surely there should be some nerdrage over this?
remember kids, it's not real
I have no idea what the bubble is for, it makes no appearance in any of the starfleet technical manuals.
It would be really nice of cryptic if they put some background information somewhere about the ships they designed. The history of the design, technical aspects, number of decks and such. And why the horizon class has a blue bubble
Comments
for your pleasure?
The little thing in the front is the bridge, and the huge bubble is the fish tank connected to the captains ready room.
Then behind the tank is engineering.
EDIT: Wow you perverts were quicker than me with that joke LOL
