Another " whats wrong with the game " post

Yup we have all seen these posts all over the forums so I thought I would stick my own ( drunk ) 2 cents in :)

1. Mission variety! The whole kill 5 things or scan 5 things gets old really really quick and from what ive seen its exactly the same throughout the game.

Episode based missions are pretty much exactly the same as one another. ie Kill 2 things in space, beam down kill or scan some things, beam up kill 2 things in space, mission done. Also they are completely linear no skill or problem solving required.

2. Enemy contacts are pointless in the current format . Need to be mixed up abit not just kill 10 random.mob squadrons.

3. Game documentation does not exist, feels alot like Criptic want the community to do the job for them by sheer guess work.

4. Fleets\guilds. No point in them with the current server structure because you cant get 4 people into the same instance never mind anything bigger.

5. Server structure.. 1 server = bad idea,. tiny instance caps = bad idea. (Take a leaf out of wows book, it works cryptic!)

6. Chat system is the worst one I have seen so far in any game. ( Take a leaf out of wow's book, it works cryptic!)

7. Class system. doesnt really exist.

8. Ground combat is poor and unchallenging. No strategy needed basically a pull and shoot.

9. The exchange has no real filtering options which makes it a nightmare to use.

10. Crafting has no proper information on it and lacks any sort of depth or variety.

11. Skills tree has no real information on what anything does, and no working re spec option.

12. Bearly resembles star trek. Feels more like a half assed version of mass effect with a star trek skin. Either that or I missed the episode where the federation turned into a war machine and killed everything.

Anyways thats what I think is wrong with the game I think it probably make sense to the majority of people who are objective, One thing i its not meant to be is a flame post, I still play the game and want it to be a success, not just a 12 month flash in the pan before SWTOR comes out.

I can help you condense all of the above into one word - Cryptic. :)

Actually, sir, it does resemble a version of Star Trek ... The Mirror, Mirror Imperal Federation ... Terror Must Be Maintained ... and all that ...

Well this is my first cryptic title ive played, but if thats true then very soon its going to be bioware vs blizzard and cryptic wont even feature which would mean another Star Trek title bites the dust. Wonder if anyone will make bridge commander 2 :D

Picking out single episodes is all good but it still doesnt fit into the overall theme. And from what I remember the federation were losing that war and the kingons were not a late addition :o

I tried the Champions Online trial from Cryptic while waiting for STO.

Sorry, but based upon how poor that was and how STO is, I rate Cryptic down there with the multiple asia type MMO companies out to make a quick buck.

Look at Turbine and the IP of Lord of the Rings and at Cryptic and how they *******ized the IP of STO. Kinda sums it all up in one line.

Not very ST-like? I suppose all of that depends on what series/movies you are looking at.

1> Capt Kirk always lived by the "shoot first, ask later" approach. Plus, he got the chicks. Plus...he always...over-dramatized...then...shot. And he still got the chicks.
2> Capt Picard lived by "ask first, ask again, fill forms in triplicate, then maybe shoot, but not before asking again." That is, until the movies, then he became a kick-butt, shoot first then ask Captain.
3> Cdr Riker was the Kirk offset to Picard's over-diplomacy. Plus, he got the girls. And had a beard for a while.
4> Cdr/Capt Cisco lived by "I'm angry, don't **** me off". You would be too if you got stuck with a babysitting job.
5> Lt/LtCdr Worf. Grew up on Earth, conflicted between his need to kick butt and the touchy-feely nature of his adopted home. Touchy-feely usually won over in the TV series, so he often got his butt beat up. Grew up in the movies, had a big pair of titanium ones in DS9.
6> Capt Janeway...not sure what to say here. Seven of Nine was hot, and was about the only one that had no problem smacking a few humanoids around.

So, there you go. You get to choose what kind of Captain you want to be...you can run around scanning things all day long, or you can go kick some butt, take names, and tell those non-federation types who is king of the sandbox.

Ah but you cant go around scanning things all day long, you actually have to be the combat captain. It doesnt even matter what spec you are, if your a science ship you will still be shooting it out with 5 enemy squadrons.

    Add to that;

    13. The XP NERF that was included in the last patch. Was 100+ on completion of Tier 2 exploration missions, now 50-something. Horomi Sector

    14. The PVE re-balance that was included in the last patch also. Either that, or they broke something again, with the last patch, like they did with BoPs in Closed beta.

Well, ev1 crying for "harder PVE", you seem to have gotten your wish. Looks like Tier 2 crusiers were NERFED even farther on the turn rate (either that or everything else was speed up). And now, 3 equal tier (Lt Com 9) Frigates tear right thru my "blue" shields like they wern't even there.

You know, I can get that at SWG with SOE. Constant NERFS/CHANGES and actually have a crafter or 2, or 4. I wish I could say I could cancel myself but I bought the lifetime. Well, live and learn.

I wanted to see what direction that Cryptic would take the game in. Guess I seen it. Good luck with your version of WoW in space, Cryptic.

I have one concern as to your post. Please, please do not compare STO to WOW. For all it's faults WOW is better and offers more and it kinda hurt to see someone put these two games together.

Now STO being a 'Champions Online in Space' I can live with. Actually I think it is CO in Space but with new graphics and sounds.

If any of you have not tried the CO trial, I advise you to and you can see how STO feels so similar to it.

    :)

Makiing the game harder isnt actually a bad thing, but then it depends how its done. There is a big difference between making things longer and a general pain and making things harder. Personally id like to see the odd puzzle mini game or at least the need for some strategy.

I used the "WoW in space" due to nothing but questing and leveling with no end game, no crafting professions, just go out and bang on a rock for an added benefit, (in this case fly by and scan), other than raiding. SWG, that game started at maxed level. I did try CO also. I think I lasted a couple of days but I couldn't make it thru the 1st month in WoW either.

I expected ST:O to be simular to CO for no other reason than it's built on the same engine. Small Maps, heavy instaced, etc etc etc. I should of known the "stealth NERFS" were on the way due to the 1day NERF patch Cryptic did with CO.

Oh well, they got me with the Star Trek name. A quick 300.00. But i doubt they'll get me for any more. Maybe I'll ck it out again in 6 months. Won't cost me anymore to do so.

Well actually im an ex wow player, the point I was trying to make was there are some key things that blizzard have done that makes wow the most popular mmo in the world, and cryptic would do well to take on board some of there ideas.

And yes I know wow is pretty horrible now, before I get abuse for being a wower :P

I thought WoW was popular because of night elf girls doing a pole dance.

As for the point of my post...every Captain, with the exception of Janeway, either was or became an aggressive A-type personality. So, running around with torpeos locked on target is pretty well in standing with Star Trek. Plus, in this timeframe, the Federation is on an aggressive defense, preferring to strike first instead of drawing a line in the sand and waiting for someone to cross it.

So, there you go. You get to choose what kind of Captain you want to be...you can run around scanning things all day long, or you can go kick some butt, take names, and tell those non-federation types who is king of the sandbox.

There is one mission where you blackmail a bar owner then slaughter the bar patrons.
There is another mission where you slaughter the personnel of a medical facility.
And there is another mission where starfleet sends you on an brutal assassination, for multiple counts of vandalism.

This goes past 'kicking TRIBBLE Captain'.

I think for me my biggest complaint is that I don't feel like a captain. I'm sick of the Ensign coming on screen and telling the Captain what to do every step of the way. The Captain is 'the Decider'. He makes CHOICES. I know it's an MMO and what not, but that is what this license requires. If you take on a franchise, either give it the attention it deserves, or don't take it.

Like the missions where I have to scan 5 anomalies, or collect 5 parts. Oh, by the way,and there are people/ships there, so kill those 5 also. And then there are 5 sets of anomalies with a guard. If they just didn't give you the kill orders, it would actually give you the choice to stand and fight, evade, or run in collect what you need then run out. Choice. Even that simple change I think would help me like this game a lot more.
