Suggestions for Social Sectors?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
It's been awhile since I've seen one of these threads. Please give constructive criticisms of the soical zones, with suggestions for ways that they can be improved.

We already have a thread suggesting swim wear at Risa, but what else could entertain you on the pleasure planet?

Other suggestions, like games?

Any other ways to beef up the role playing potential?

What else could happen at Quarks or in the holodecks, or on Andoria?

This may not be an immediate priority for Cryptic, but I'm sure that they would appreciate some good and thoughtful ideas.

Please give yours.

    Definitely mini games!

Depending on where you are located at of course.

A standard Federation star base would not have such lax gambling rules like DS9.

Although some Poker on your ship would be acceptable;)

Simple things like 3 dimensional chess, Terrace and even PVP Velocity would be very fun.

I really do like the idea of mini-games especially poker, although I'm not sure that Trek ever really explained how DABO or other games like damjat (sp?) worked. 3d chess would be awesome, although I'm not certain how different that is from regular chess.

If anything, the games would require some basic new building, but honestly I would be happy with something as 2d and simple as yahoo games or others like that.

The games wouldn't have to be ground-breaking to get me hooked, as long as they catered to social players, like with chat and stuff.

Some of the social settings, like Risa, could have mini exploration missions attached to them where you can explore the local plant and wildlife.

This doesn't add to the overall social feel of those areas but we need to stop beaming in with our weapons at the ready unless it somehow turns into a mission (kind of like at the end of open beta when they had the borg attack everywhere, then we can beam in with weapons)

    http://www.yestercade.net/tactical.htm

This is for 3D Chess from the Star Trek Technical Manual

Not too sure about Dabo but i'm sure some rules exist somewhere tucked away in some usenet posting

Minigames would add a lot of life to some of these places. I would definitely like to see that.

Mini games would be great. Dabo, chess, kalto, poker, darts, etc. I'd really like to feel like the social areas are real areas that people actually use to socialize in. Right now they just feel like big empty sets with signs on all the furniture that say "Please do not sit on furniture..."

This is an MMO... the social maps shouldn't be empty. If I go in to the Mos Eisley Cantina on all but the deadest SWG server, there are usually people there. You can see people roleplaying. You can see people talking about PvP and PvE content, you can see people just socializing.

You can't have an MMO without the social aspect... it doesn't retain players because players don't form communities. Cryptic already chose to heavily instance a single shard, which drastically reduces the community feeling.

I played on Eclipse in SWG. I logged in recently during the free trial period and I still knew people... people still knew me. I've played STO every day since January 13, and there's not a lot of community feeling at all. I socialize with my fleet and the couple of RL friends who play, and that's about it.

SWG had entertainers which forced people to go to Cantinas (social spaces). What does STO have?

I think that the era of the "social MMO" has passed.

SWG and the older MMOs are like that, still, because they were formed at a different time, before MMOs went mass market and people began to wall themselves off in PAs. Pretty much almost all of the newer MMOs have featured pre-formed PAs as a mainstay of the gaming experience, precisely because of very bad experiences people have had with the broader mass market MMO community since WoW was released.

I think the social content of the game would be best directed towards fleets, as a result of this. Fleets are the context in which most of the socialization in this game will take place.

Risa should have some duelling, like on the other planet. And the instances should be bigger then on other planets.

I would love STO to be a more social MMO where people don't mind hanging out in the local starbase pubs or in a holodeck(where are the holodecks in this game??) but like someone said, the time of social MMORPGs is over. There are either 3D chatrooms like Second Life, PS@Home or there's World of Warcraft, STO, Everquest, where combat is the only emphasis. There's no mix of the two (like SWG was).
