To everyone who names there ship something and has it as a later model like they did on the series with the Enterprise, you don't put the model letter in the ship name. It goes after the ship number.
For example, when they made the Enterprise D, the classification went as follows.
USS Enterprise
NCC 1701-D
NOT like I see so commonly done on STO as follows
USS Enterprise D
NCC 1701
I hope this clears that misunderstanding up, it's funny/aggrivating to see the mistake so I had to share this to vent a little frustration.

Here's an example on the Enterprise E.
Yes alot of us already know that, but if you named your first ship
USS Enterprise
NCC 1701
You have to put the D up with the name of the second one
USS Enterprise D
NCC 1701 D
So using
USS Enterprise
NCC 1701 D
will not work because the first ship is named Enterprise also
P.S don't tell me to rename my first ship either. Thank you
Did I say Rename your ship? No, I said how to properly put the letter in the title. So don't make accusations with no evidence to support it.
And Why you would name your ship the same thing is just odd, I'd either rename the old one, or DC the old one. But to each his own.
First of all show me where I said directly that you told me to rename my ship, second I stated why people was using the letter up with the name. And I guess the whole damn Star Trek series that has to do with the Enterprise is odd, just look at how many USS Enterprise there was, they never renamed the ship after it got destroyed or model was decommisioned, I just think you are odd, but yeah you are right....each his own.
You are correct! However, we have the ability to name the ships how we like.
true, but how many enterprises can ppl realistically get away with before it gets 1894?
tbh "special" ship names should be impossible to use (even misspelled ones). all this does now is take away much of the feeling for the game when you see a nub ship named enterprise, enterprize, entorprize etc etc etc because ppl are to stu... to think up unique names or even to use the name generator.

Actually, the OP is correct. The reason you name the ship just 'Enterprise' is because there will not be two ships named 'Enterprise' on active duty at the same time. I do not believe a ship can be given the same name as another as long as the first ship exists, even if it is in mothballs. I think a ship name can be given to a new ship once the old ship is decommissioned and removed from the rolls, which usually means it will be scrapped.

I believe this is the case in the game, unless it's changed recently? I keep all my ships, and will probably purchase additional ones. Just in case I want to go help or team with some lower ranked people, and want to just hop in a ship of the same rank as them. I remember, initially, I couldn't use the same name of my previous ships I had kept.
I've been tacking a letter on to the end of my ship names. Not cannon I know, I don"t care. I"d just rather not spend the merits every time to re name my old ship.

called get rid of it then ues you old name there is a ship cap to you can only have 8 ships

so delete the old one. The ship that is. The only reason they HAVE letters after the names is because the one before it went BOOM! or was retired. At no point in time (Other than the episode "All good things come to an end") were there multiple ships with the same name. Thats WHY you can only name a ship a name once. If you want a real life example look at modern navy practices.
Also seeing someone name their ship Enterprise and seeing like 10 of them in the same area just makes me die a little inside. Its like screaming "I have no originality!" Not saying you have named a ship Enterprise but the example just made me want to bring that up . It's like this games version of WoW's Legolas..

I never said he wasn't correct. Please re read my first line, I agreed with him., then I went on to state why some people have the the letter up with the name. The only way to do it is to rename your ower tier ship. Oh and it cost credits everytime you rename a ship.
Now on to why this can be bad
1) You reach lv 45 and no more content right off hand, so you hop in one of your lower tier ships to play with lower lv people. Not only do you have to pay to rename your lower tier but also have to pay to rename your tier 5 ship so you can get that name back on your other ship.
I know it's not the proper way to do a name for a ship, but under the current state it's all we can do so we don't spend a fortune on renaming ships.
This is realy the one and only issue I have with Crytic, on allowing other people to have the same name as your ship but you can't keep the name even when putting the A, B, C...ect with the registery number
What does that have to do with me nameing my first ship
USS Alleghany
NX - 93502 - A
Then naming my second ship
USS Alleghany B
NX - 93502 - B
You have to put the B up with the USS Alleghany also if you want to keep the name. It doesn't matter if you use an iconic name or not.
Does switching the the example name from Enterprise to Alleghany help you out any
omg said this befor you get RID OF THE OLD SHIP there is a ship cap to you may only have 8 SHIPS at one time and is why you can ues the name if you have uesd it on a old ship of your so to ues the same name hmmm get rid of the old one problum overe

Thing is; you can name your ship the same as someone else's... but not one of your previous ships.
Technical reason more than gameplay I think; they dont want to have duplicate "name" entries in the database; not for the same character.
As I see it they have a structure like "Server-> Account-> Character -> Inventory" (inventory meaning all your stats; your items; traits; etc). A bit like a disk structure; where you can't have two files with the exact same filename inside a folder; but can have a file with the exact same name somewhere else in the structure, in another folder.
So; there's not really a starfleet regulation with ships name being in effect; but a technical programming reason; they coincide; but the game still allows for more than one ship in the server to have a given name.

OMG you don't know how to read the whole thread do you, for one I wasn't the one *****ing about putting the letter up with the name the OP was, I stated why people are putting it up there. And have an 8 ship cap doesnt effect me since this charcter plays with science ships so again that is a non factor at this point and don't tell me to get rid of old ships that I still use and am perfectly content with the way I am playing and the use of my ships name

I can see you still didn't reread the whole thread throughly.
Please tell me what I am QQ about, you really didn't comprehend anything I typed. I even said in my last post to you that I was content with the way things are, in other words I am happy with the game.

I had to put it out there where people could see it, too many people on the zone chat yelling about the big dig.

that cuz the name has been black listed they dont wont you uesing icon name from the show so thats why you got to put you lil D in the name
called get rid of it then ues you old name there is a ship cap to you can only have 8 ships
