I had an idea for a death penalty. I thinks its quite simple and it might make you not want to get killed.
Alright, so you and your team are patrolling a system looking for something to kill. ALL OF A SUDDEN you see a borg cube way off in the distance. you and your team rush in after it to destroy it. you have all of your skills ready to use and you are gonna destroy it. You start fighting and your team wasnt prepared for it and your ship gets destroyed. you respawn. you warp in to help your friends to prevent the same fate that just befell you a few seconds ago. You see that one of your team mates is about to die. SO you....
Tactical - decide to use your high yield III so as to make up for the damage that you friend wont be able to dish out because he just died.
Engineering - Send over an engineering team III to help fix his hull for some precious seconds to deal some more damage.
Science - beam aboard you Science team III to fix his faltering shields to prevent more damage.
As you go to activate it. WAIT ! ! ! for some reason your skills have a cool down timer of 10 minutes. It must of been that when you got destroyed your bridge officer (or officers) have been knocked out and are in the medical bay for treatment. or perhaps the console that your officer (or officers) was using shorted out and exploded and are unable to use that console for another 10 minutes. You slap yourself for dieing because you are unable to help your friends. maybe next time you will try your best not to die.
Scenario 2
you die and rush in to finish what you have started and defeat the almighty borg cube. you think you are going to get him by using your.......
Tactical - dual heavy cannons
Engineering - beam arrays
Science - turret ?
BUT WAIT. The well placed torpedo volley just disabled your.....
Tactical - dual heavy cannons
Engineering - beam arrays
Science - turret ?
You slap yourself because you are unable to fire at the enemy and now you are just a sitting duck.
So what do you think. would you not want to die.
(NOTE: sorry if this idea was already posted, also there might be a few gramatical errors)
(2nd NOTE: this is my first post so i didnt know where to put this, but this looked like the right place)
The simple solution is, allow respawning only after a full defeat of either the NPCs involved, or a full defeat of all the players involved (aka "wipe"). There, zerg-rushing is not a viable tactic any more without any further punishment.
allow respawning only after a full defeat of either the NPCs involved, or a full defeat of all the players involved (aka "wipe").
Sounds good, nice and simple.
That realy wouldn"t be a good idea, take the crystaline entity for example... Player 1 dies and can't respawn till everyone is dead
Player 2 and 3 die and cant respawn
Rest of players say TRIBBLE and leaves cause enitity keeps getting healed to full health from all the deaths,
so players 1, 2, and 3 should be able to respawn cause no one in zone left alive, but wait you got Joe Smoe in the U.S.S I Don't Give A Damn sitting all the way across the zone.
Now players 1, 2, and 3 can't respawn because Joe Smoe is being an TRIBBLE an enjoying the fact that he has 3 players locked down and can't respawn.

Persnally I'd rather see a respawn back to Star Fleet HQ with half damaged hulls, all systems knocked out, all bridge officers in sick bay and all crew having to be replaced.
Should be 10 minutes downtime at least.
But if you're going to do this, then this BS about random enemy's jumping your ***** in deep space with 30 ships to your 1 needs to stop. If it's a deep space encounter why the HELL is there an entire fleet there? One ship yes, 2 ships maybe, 3 possible but rare. Anything more than that is just ganking by the Dev team.

why not 45 minutes downtime, full ship loss, boff perma death chance of captain perma death item loss and a big money sink, say 150k per death?

just make it like on eve. you loose skills and must pay 1 mill or more for your ship and all the equipment as well.
that way all the deathers will be happy.
personally i think the whole death penalty thoughts are kinda crazy.
if you dont play well sorry. i do. thats why i dont team up with you guys.
oh and force you to reinstall teh client or buy a whole new box and force you to use a whole new computer if you want to play after a death.
Better yet, a Cryptic Employee beams into your computer room with an Alkaline-Earth Metal supermagnet, grins at you and puts it on your computer while you flail helplessly.
How about the devs introduce a ship condition % that covers all those little things like life support and other minor things that would make living in a spaceship so marvelous?
And every time you are defeated that % drops a little. And the more it drops the more of a penalty you will have to shields, weapons and speed as the insides of your ship is startng to get damaged and harder to fight effectively.
Now the only place you can repair your ship is at a starbase so you will have to go there to remove this penalty for energy credits. Say a 10% of the value of your ship to repair it from 0% to 100%.
So if you limp into starbase with your Escort (120K credits value) shot up and sitting at 25% you would need to pay 9000 energy credits to repair the ship.
What about incorporating some sort of "lives" system? We could have a number of lives for each mission, and if the number of lives is depleted, you are out of the mission and can't join that same instance again for a period of time.
In all honesty, I'm completely content with no death penalty. It's annoying enough to have to run/fly back to where you died and take on the same enemies again for me. Plus, I think Star Trek has a bit of an immortal air to it, if you get my drift. Rarely ever were ships destroyed in any of the series. Of course, they were usually busy "scanning five of these" or "killing five of those" to worry about being blasted at all.

Joe Smoe isn't involved in the fight as otherwise he'd probably be dead by that time, too. Also, you could allow leaving to sector space while dead with this system. Similar to WoW, where you cannot corpse-run into an ongoing bossfight, but can revive outside and go away if you wish so.
Actually, I really like the idea of respawning at the nearest Starbase. Of course, every mission would have to be re-balanced so that any somewhat-competent player can finish it without dying, given a reasonable amount of effort.

depending on the base and your location that could be as much as 10 mins to get back to the mission each death.
No one will do deep space encounters and the time drain is absurd.
I favor an approach that doesn't necessarily remove you from the scene of combat for too long, but hurts your effectiveness for a given amount of time.
For example:
For 2 mins, all power levels set to 50%
For 2 mins, impulse engines disabled.
Respawn with 10% hull and hull regeneration limited to 1% per second. (90 seconds to full hull integrity, immune to any hull regenerating buffs)
Any of the above, or the combination of them would do fine. 2 mins is something I picked from the air, it could be 3 or 5 or whatever.

You know how many times I get caught by a random encounter and spawn right in the middle of a massive fleet?
A lot. And there is nothing to do but die in these circumstances.

How about the game cancelling your subscription, billing you for an extra month and uninstalling the client as well?

Could always have the death penalty they joked about at the conference perma death with revival via CC rofl
But on a serious note I really don't want one as I just want to get on play and have fun not sit about and wait for something to cool down
or just have encounter resets, when you respawn.
I dont think people die enough for a death penality .... to matter.
