How do I make my ship ascend or descend quickly?

I've been using the s and w keys. I've seen others make quick ascents and descents. I can't manage it.

I don't think there is a way. The ascent/descent method I use is the "corkscrew" maneuver. You do a rising turn so that you don't change your X axis too much. It's a pain in the butt but it's better than just trying to do a flat 45 degree ascent or descent as that will take you past your intended destination most of the time.

Evasive maneuvers button. Its the one that looks like a lightning bolt.

Use the knife to cut free the sandbags to ascend quickly.

This, or also use Ramming Speed if of the appropriate level.

This is one of the fixes I am hoping for. A Klingon pops up on a massively different level and you have to climb like a fighter jet or dive like a sub to come to grips with them.

I understand the 2.5 system and why it makes for a simple and easy to understand player interface, but the corkscrew is difficult and frustrating.
