After playing Champions online, I thought maybe Cryptic was ignorant and overlooked an aspect of every other MMO on the market -- that would would be the ability to reallocate points in a point based skill system -- ie, the respec.. It turns out though they decided to make it part of a profit model.
For those of you that didn't play Champions Online, it's was startlingly familar at lauch: a point based skill system and ZERO documention on what skills did, or how well the worked, or if they had ANY synergy with other skills. After a few MAJOR power changes, Cryptic would offer players a full respec they could use at their discretion -- all while players had to rely on the community to do the work of decribing what the powers actually did and didn't do. Eventually a "respec" ended up on the C-Store, which is the same place it's going to be in STO.
It's a ****** item to put up as a real time money transaction, especially when it's essential given that Crytpic will not, or doesn't know how to, create a functional game manual to include in their games. The worst part is that the point system of STO is fairly complex, there is still NO data on most skills from Cryptic, and after they hand out one free respec, you can bet you'll be paying for them in a very unforgiving system.
I enjoyed Champions, and I enjoy STO -- but Crytpic, you're the only team that does this and it is a ****** way to make a buck. Sack up and do what every game in the genre does, and knock off this petty TRIBBLE. You know we need respecs to start with, we need them even more because you have us NO skill information, and I'm asking you to please put a quest in game to allow for these without charging your customers for something MMO players have come to expect as simply part of the fun of customizing their character in game.
