how can you tell what weapon is better? And what does DPS stand for?
I keep finding weapons and besides the hitpoints I have no idea if fase hurts more then dusruptor or whatever... sometimes they have less hitpoints but more DPS?
Or they fire 3 shots? is then the hitpoints times 4?
DPS stands for Damage Per Second. If a higher-hitting weapon does the same DPS as a lower-hitting one, that means that the higher-hitting one takes longer to recharge. Generally, you want to choose the weapon that does a higher DPS.
Now, some weapons do other effects, like have a higher chance of doing critical damage, or doing DoT (damage over time). Plasma weapons have a tendency of doing the latter.
However, most weapons of a given mark do the same DPS. This can be modified, however, based on skilling up a weapon and equipping consoles designed for a particular weapon. If you max out your phaser skill and have a bunch of consoles for phasers, you're going to do more damage with phasers than if you got the purple endgame weapons without skilling them up.
All this being said, there's still a lot of depth with the weapons. If you're not in a fleet, I suggest you join one, and ask them some more particular questions, at least until you get the hang of it.
