1) The entry level ship is wimpy because it is ENTRY LEVEL.
2) Entry level equipment seems expensive because you start with zero resources. You will gain more than enough resources to outfit your ship fairly quickly.
3) The initial battles are quite easy, actually. Even compared to the overall easy nature of the combats in STO, the initial battles are simple. Perhaps you just aren't used to this kind of game, and so it will take a little bit of time to master the controls?
4) Micro-transactions are a potential source of death for an MMO, if handled incorrectly. However, if they provide services and rewards that are either non-vital to game play (such as extra race options), OR are otherwise achievable through game play if they are vital (such as gear that you need in order to be successful at higher levels), I see nothing wrong with them. This IS a business, after all, and they ARE trying to make a profit.
