Any free trial should have chatbox and ingame communication restrictions as part of the free trial!
Anyone serious about ingame communication can bite the bullet and communicate through Vent or TS, honesltys im sick of getting 70+ spam mails in an average of 3 days for me to BUY energy credits, these guys you cant block, you ignore one and another shows up, its like a 50 headed gold Seller hydra.. its those damn Del Taco things, with the 2 day free trial or whatever i bet thats what their using, they prolly went to Del Taco and bought a thousand cups...
If there is to be a 10 - 15 day free trial of STO, please consider restricting ingame text based communication, limit characters per hour, limit the number of tells, limit the friends list, limit every avenue of communication in STO that could be perverted into a marketing capaign for these annoying people!
Lift the restrictions naturally for Subscibers and if the person gets too many comp, aints and etc about selling, then you can ban them!
They already have systems in place to combat the spam. For example, once X number of people report spam on a single account, they are automatically muted and unable to send any messages at all for a 24 hour period, presumably until they get an actual employee to review it? I dunno.
The biggest problem is the whole one-world design of the game. In games like World of Warcraft with many many many different servers, even they have the occasional spammer that runs into town every few hours, on each server. But in STO they can focus all their efforts on the entire community at once making it a very easy operation.
Honestly though, I don't expect it to last. Not because of anything cryptic does, but simply because Energy Credits are the only tradable currency and they are basically worthless. You only use them to buy additional ships in your tier and have a limited selection of common quality gear to equip your ship with and thats about it, both of which you can easily pay for yourself without really even trying to save.
The exchange has ridiculous prices, but once again it's mainly because the currency is worthless.
No one would be willing to buy lump sums of this worthless currency because theres no benefit to it. The gold seller companies will lose money trying to run their operation in STO. Eventually it'll die down on it's own because theres just no profit to be made in a game without a functional economy.
