Sorry if this has been answered/covered previously. Trying to read this forum is like drinking from a firehose at times, and searching on this query hasn't found what I'm looking for.
Can anyone advise what fleets are actually being used for in STO? Just flying around in a group, and doing missions or PvP together? I presume primarily the latter since most participating in fleets are probably fairly organised/committed and are likely to be higher levels doing PvP stuff.
To play the game with people you like.... when you need/want to group with people.... which isn't very often.... for now.
I am Capt 2nd grade atm, and I have never had to group with anyone yet.
Heck it's hard to get people to join a group for Partol Missions.
Do you or anyone else know if there will be missions where you actually have to group? I don't mind some grouping, but having NO grouping is kinda boring!

Social interaction so that we don't all become complete nerd-like MMO gaming addicts who never see the light of day? Oh nevermind, we can do that regardless of Ventrilo/Teamspeak conversations.

Most of the missions do not require grouping, the game is designed to be solo-friendly. Fleet actions put multiple players in the same battle but do not require you to actually form teams.
The upcoming raid-i-sodes will require 5-man groups to accomplish. You won't be able to solo them, as you won't get an away team of your BO's.
That said, grouping up makes the game more fun. The mission difficulty scales up when you are in a group to match the increased firepower, and having friends along with different ships and abilities makes the battles much more dynamic and fun in my opinion.
Hmmm...I've been curious about the possibility of joining a fleet, but I'm not sure what you get out of it (The points above haven't really jumped out at me. I'm only playing STO for a couple of hours a day, (So I'm getting my social interaction in RL), and I don't know if what you get is worth the effort that has to be put in. A) I'm not using anything like Teamspeak, so I suspect comms via typing limit the social interaction. I don't have time to read some fleet forum to see what the fleet is up to. If fleets are as easy as 'just fire the game up and play along with fleet memebers' that might be worth it, but I don't know how much time to commit I would have beyond that.
Fleet/guild functions are usually used for end-game content. Also it is a tool which helps people to gather together with other people allowing more solid social interaction.
It's also a support which helps people to build up events, be it combat or just an rpg event. Oh yes, RPG in mmo....that could happen.
I would personally advice people to use their imagination, because for now even if there are now real content supporting larger grouping, people could build up their characters and start to live their characters instead of hopping around the space station holding a weapon and thinking how boring this game is (not generalizing but just noting out
Oh and I pay these people to BE my imagination not to stand around in half finished land pretending there is more. Give me my events and cupids and crafting and ORC MORE ORC..no wait....hmm..wtf was that?

Still I think people lack quite a bit self-motivation and imagination when it comes to actually trying to act like their character should. Roleplaying doesn't have to be "bigger than life" every time. It doesn't mean you should be out fighting dragons or saving the universe.
I just had a nice conversation yesterday with someone in the earth's space station bar. She was a bartender and I was asking for directions.
I personally love those small roleplaying moments more than some big huge "yada feel my wrath, I'm a vampire" rpg TRIBBLE.

So if I'm teaming with people in missions, it kinda achieves the same result?

Besides what would I get here BKP instead of DKP?
