Do the STO episode writers think the general population/subscription base of this game is a 12 year old MMO kid with pink hair who thinks that Star Trek is "the most boringest" SciFi genre out there?

Or do they consider at least most of us to be high-school grad level Star Trek fans that want more depth from episodes than beaming down to a planet, listening to NPCs I could care less about, talk about their non-functioning holodecks and long work hours, and then to have: I kid-you-not, a pop-quiz from an NPC to finish the quest.

Seriously, step up the depth, morality, gray areas, and overall impact of the writing in the STO universe Gozer and all... Don't dumb it down, we can handle it. Cryptic employees in charge of this department, I KNOW you have English degrees...USE THEM!

As silly as that quest was, it's probably the most unique one I've seen in the game yet. I shall not be knocking it. Nothing was scanned and no one was killed. Let's not discourage them from doing something different.

Let me tell you that you just played one of the more engaging missions...

Ok, the storyline missiones have some good story to them, but they all play out pretty much the same. I do not mind reading, I would enjoy more missions like the storyline ones where they develop a nice story.

Meh... Too tired already, don't know what to think anymore.

It still felt shallow and brushed over. I know the argument about too much pew pew, I know it first hand. I"m talking about writing here, storytelling, and it was garbage in my OP quest. What would happen, I don't know...if say they DIDN'T meet Starfleet's demands? Or we go back to them at a later point and they've armed and demand transport OFF the mining planet because their demands haven't been met? See what I mean about me not caring about this people or their plight?

That quest actually shows some type of creative thought to non-combat. It's incredibly silly, yes, but at least it is something besides endless killing.

In about 15-20 lvl's, your gonna WISH they had more missions like that.

I definitely get where you're coming from, and I agree with you. I was being halfway sarcastic in my reply.

Maybe I'm dead wrong but it seems to me that a scifi video game will attract more older players than the heroic fantasy genre. Maybe Cryptic underestimated this, plus the fact that the Startrek IP is really much more than pewpew in space. Furthermore, the guys in charge seem to like the pewpew a lot (Zinc admitted that he plays STO to fire torpedoes and blow stuff up).

Again, I know the argument about too much pew, pew missions...I'm just saying I guess that this type of TRIBBLE from my OP ISN'T a good model to follow, this mission is a sour grape in a basket of moldy raisins

This is very true. For all the bad of this mission, it at least was non-repetitive pew pew.

I don't know how far the OP is in the game, but at Commander 8 I've already run into a few missions that push morality or some gray area like a Star Trek episode. I would like more of these types of stories, but they are there albeit few in number.

I appreciate that, I'm only Lt. Commander so far. But if there are more, I'd welcome to continue to give the writing a chance till I level and review these morality plays also

Yes, some of the main story episodes fit this bill.. at least as far as the narrative is concerned. A couple of them make me feel like I need to go to confession.

I say SciFi is at it's ABSOLUTE BEST when it makes social commentary. Best displayed in actual Trek episodes from ANY series. And the worker's strike was a brushed over, haphazard attempt at that. It came out very sloppy and half-baked.

Oh, they continue all the way up to Admiral. The story episodes are often about being mislead into doing something morally reprehensible. Some interesting storytelling is done, but seeing more would be nice.

Is there a choice? Morally reprehensible is one side of it. Can I choose another path? I'm driving at depth in my OP.

Unfortunately, not that I've seen. I wish there were more choices in the story as well. Based on the interviews with Cryptic I've seen/read, their response would probably be that "players would find it too confusing." That has been their stock response so far when it comes to matters of depth in the game.

Which is a shame, because I think those interested in a Star Trek MMO aren't unintelligent. The general public, yes..you assume are morons, and you make The King of Queens to target them, but STO deserves better writing! Deeper stories.

Sometimes I really wish a company like Bioware was working on STO...

That's funny. After I wrote that message, I was thinking that Cryptic might have been better off with the Star Wars MMO, and BioWare might have been better off with the Trek MMO.

I don't know. I absolutely love BioWare's games, but I do admit that combat is not one of their strengths. So far, the space combat in STO is the main thing I am enjoying, and it is something I would probably miss if it were a BioWare title.

At this point, it's all academic, and all we can hope for is that Cryptic are really considering what we have to say about this game. It's really not too late for them to rethink their whole approach, but it won't be long before it is.

Also, I have no idea if they have any interest in rethinking it at all. As many have said, they seem to be happy catering to a very casual audience.

Yup, my opinion too : Cryptic can deliver a fun game with eye candy graphics and fast paced action. Given Bioware's budget, the would do an amazing Starwars. And Bioware has what it takes to make a great STO. About combat, I'm not sure : I enjoy the ground combat in ME and ME2, but I admit I'm easily pleased with action games (because I don't care that much probably).

I agree that Cryptic managed to create a great space fight system, I really didn't think it would be so good. I was pretty sure we would get a dog fight thing but nope, they avoided that.

why so STO could become even more of a single player experience.
