I mean come on, there is no world you share with others other than sector space, the whole game is built around you going solo. There is no incentive nor reason to team up with other people unless they are your IRL friends and you just want to do that.
The crystaline entity is the closest you get to a MMO in the game and even then people wont listen to instructions because you are not automatically grouped up as a team and there are people in 40 different zones doing the same quest all shouting different stuff.
Probably not. STO is a single-player MMOFPS or MMOTPS (Third-Person Shooter), as opposed to a MMORPG with the basic breadth and depth that even the rudimentary mmorpgs have.

I think all the players who prefer to team and complain that this is a single player game should get together and... form teams.
Because, believe it or not, the game lets you do that.
Or do you actually dislike teaming if it's not forced on you?
This is a themepark style mmo which shouldnt even be called an MMORPG in the first place..... Because there is no community or world building that takes place like you have in sandbox's! Basically this game is an RPG with multiplayer capability....

Yessss.... massive multiplayer capability..... I dare say.... IT'S AN MMORPG.

They should have had multiple realms, given the fact its soooo single player anyways.
This shard thing just only made it more of a barrier to the whole MMO.
They should have done the multiple realm. At least less load time from zone to zone. And they could do 'cross-realm' fleet battles. and 'cross-realm' deep space encounters.
I'm tired of this loading zones load screen over and over. Zone to space dock earth hit load screen. dock on to space station = load screen. walk into admiral's office = load screen. lead admiral's office = load screen go to get my new ship = load screen. leave ship requisition area = load screen. access my bank. beam back to ship = load screen. go to sector space = load screen. move to next zone = load screen. hmmmm....
WoW. that's a TRIBBLE ton of load screens just to do trivial tasks before going to my mission.
As a Klingon, auto grouping isnt going to help with the complete lack of player-base. Tried the 3 fleet actions tonight and no one else is doing them, which means they cant be accomplished.
Several cracked planet queue's with long wait times, only to enter with incomplete teams on either side makes for a boring turkey shoot.

Would you rather not be able to do things because you can't find help?
I prefer this way. The community is there if you want to tap into it but it's only required for DSE's/Fleet Actions. It lets you play how you want to.
