Star Trek Vs. Star Wars

ive noticed that people tend to fall into two camps, star trek people, and star wars people. altho we may like the movies and all from both we tend to have a preference for one or the other. there are exceptions of course.

star trek seemed to be about the group. star wars seemed to be about the individual. in star wars luke skywalker saved the galaxy whereas in star trek the crew of the enterprise (in whatever iteration) saved the gaaxy. (and dont bother giving me the few episodes that were exceptions, i mean the overall theme of the movies/shows)

perhaps this is what i find missing in this game.

But wasn't Stat Trek about one ship and crew, not multiple ships?

    The divide is far simpler.

    Star Wars = Science fantasy.

Star Trek, Farscape, Babylon 5, Stargate (except some "Ancients" stuff) = Science fiction.

So you expect me to serve on your ship? Why would I want to be a crew memeber when I can be a Captain?

The point is that the original Star Trek was about a ship. A single ship and yes the story of how the crew delt with an encounter. In STO, very few players would be willing to only play when you play so they can be part of your crew. That would be the dumbest thing ever seen in an MMO.

I want more group required entcounters. At least one per tier would be nice. But using the original Star Trek as an example. You are not asking for grouping. You are asking for exactly what we have now. You as Captain of a single ship with your BO's helping you in space with skills and on the ground with combat.

Both IPs are great. I love them both for what they are, but I find that Trek has A LOT more content that is easily accessible, and thus find myself devoting more hours to Trek. I still think the lightsaber is the coolest weapon of all time.

I prefer Star Wars, but I'm getting tired of how it's basically all about the jedi now. Star Trek is great, but it's just too shiny and bright for me sometimes. Like in TNG when Picard claimed that humanity had basically overcome greed and now there was really no currency for them. That to me was just silly, along with a few other instances that are similar to this. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing Star Trek, I just find it a bit too...optimistic sometimes.

I agree that Star Wars is way more fantasy than Star Trek. Mind you I wouldn't miss a movie in either series but still Trek always felt more "real".

As far as games, well, SWG had a good thing then killed it. Here's to hoping that Cryptic watched and learned.

I grew up watching Star Trek from the late 60's on. Yeah..I'm an old TRIBBLE.

I watched Star Wars when it first came out in the 70's.

Star Trek was always fun, because it was the "what if" of the future.

Star Wars was fascinating for what it showed could be done on the big screen.

What eventually turned me off of Star Wars is that they seemed to focus less and less on the story and more and more on "Hey! Let's see what type of weird aliens we can create."

    "But what about the story?"

"Oh yeah, that...um...Darth is Luke's father...mkay? Now back to the aliens. Ooh ewoks! They're cute and furry and can beat trained professional stormtroopers."

    Fast forward several years.

"Ooh...look what I made. I'll shall call him Jar Jar Binks. Forget the story line. Meesa have Jar Jar!"

    Star Trek wins hands down.

If you're missing the group aspect, get a group of friends and do missions together. Space will be a breeze, but it can get fun on the ground, especially if you join Fleet Actions together.

My best suggestion is to do PVP with a group of people.

Thus far, PVP offers the most group-oriented play I have seen in any game. Victory is literally decided by whichever team has the better teamwork (i.e., coordinated support).

Star Wars is more fantasy oriented. That is why I don’t like it as much. I hate fantasy stuff. Anything that involves magic I can’t stand. Star Wars has this, they can use “The Force” to move stuff, control people’s minds, etc. There is no scientific explanation for The Force.

Sure Star Trek has some fantasy elements too, like troi being able to read minds, or odo changing shape, etc. But they do make an effort to explain that. That is part of their race, they are biologically born with those abilities.

Star Trek tries to provide a scientific explanation for everything, some of the explanations may not be very plausible at all but at least they try.

Star Wars has a huge element that is just pure magic and I hate that. It might as well be Harry Potter or LOTR both of which I completely can’t stand!

I like them both equally. I like other fantasy stuff like lotr etc too. It's all the same too me, fantasy. Some, like star trek is based on futuristic fantasy, and lotr etc is based on what reminds me of old mythological kind of fantasy stuff. It's all the same bag to me. Now as far as books, I fall asleep trying to read a star trek or star wars book. Love the movies but, for books It is old magic fantasy swords n sorcerer kind of stuff that I like.

I appreciate that Lucas, came up w/ star wars, and really did not borrow much of anything from star trek, which had already been around for some time. He came up w/ his own universe and made it stand apart completely. I respect that. But I also like Roddenberry's vision.

I appear to be the exception. I have roughly equal levels of like and dislike with each.
