Ok, So Im assigned to explore the Afehierr Nebula. Typical between patrol and storyline mission. Until I beam to the surface of Planet Rho VWW.
Upon arrival, me and my crew find ourselves collecting data on a strange plant emitting some kind of bs thats hindering the planets sensors established by the Federation some time ago.
But soon as I scan the first object. I get a message from my tactical officer reporting Klingons in the region. Suddenly, my mundane mission, but a good change of pace from all the pew pew turns to useless fighting. Come to find out the Klingons arent there to collect data on the plant (atleast that isnt hard to believe) but just there to harrass us. (again not hard to believe considering who they are) Its just.......now I have to risk my crew and my safety over data from a plant that my ship can easily come back for at another time when its safe?
But of course not! I shouldnt let useless bloodshed stop me from gathering information from a plant.
Im sorry, but these missions are starting to bore me. As soon as the Klingons popped up on the planet, I aborted. Because Im tired of KILLING EVERYTHING WITH NO REASON WHATSO EVER. Atleast with WoW there was some kindof back story. "Oh these kobolds are destroying my crop! Please deal with these Vermin!" Thats just not the case here, its utterly useless bloodshed. Its an exploration mission for gods sake. Its supposed to be a change of pace. To break up the monteny of it all.
Im not complaining about killing so much. As long as its justifiable, or even concievable why you would do it. But in this case, its seriously not something a StarFleet Officer would do. Gathering that data is not worth the lives of my crew. Wether they are real or not. Its just not Star Trek. Nothing about that mission was essential to the survival of the UFP.
Thanks for this thread, I strongly approve and share your opinion. Time for a shameless copy/paste :
Idea to limit the "evil Federation effect"
1) The simple way
We just need two skills : "disable ship" and "stun for good", I don't care if the opponent just vanish instead of
staying down. Also, give an accolade to those who kill a lot, it is war, each playstyle should be rewarded.
Advantages :
* This would stop the "Federation is evil" threads
* This would help the immersion for the diplomats / beatniks / Picards
* A new perk is always good for those who plays hours and hours
* This would give the option to the more warlike federation officers to get rewarded too, this is woooar after all
* It takes almost no dev time, THINK OF THAT CRYPTIC, almost no dev time to please MANY players !
2) A much more powerful and complex system suggested by Leviathan99
Furthermore, there is a thread gathering players suggestions. Phox stickied it and said he will use it to voice our opinion to the devs. If you didn't post there already, I suggest you do so to ask for less pewpew, more IQ, more diplomacy, minigames, ships interiors etc. etc. so you can be sure your suggestions won't go unnoticed :
I just dont want everything to be about killing. YES we get it, its war. But at the same time. Not everything about StarFleet is about blowing **** up. Some of the most interesting shows were about nothing more then learning of a new sentient species. And it had nothing to do with killing someone just to gather that data.
I wanna know when i get to hide on a alien planet and watch their development for a few hours while theyre on the brink of discovering warp theory, and then make first contact. Not this "hey there is a warp capapble planet here that no one knew about (in a nebula right next to Sol) give them some TRIBBLE and theyre are friends YAY"
In the meantime, until we get more actual exploration missions, you can avoid 90% of these 'exploration turned into fight static groups standing on top of your objective' missions as most of the time a hint of a possible enemy is given in the text before you beam down. As soon as I read that I just abort the mission and warp out...
When we fight pirates, \we should be able to board enemy ships and detain the crew rather than just killing them outright. So that they can be put on trial and all, the civilised thing to do.

You don't "detain" people who are shooting at you.
Yeah it's one of the big flaws right now with STO. It's all about pew pew combat and almost nothing else. I can't figure out why none of the planets I explore are ever inhabited by anything except bad guys to blow up.

You were ordered to do what you started doing and suddenly your crew was at risk and you chose to abort the mission and leave.
Isn't that exactly what you were suggesting you should do?
If you don't want to risk your crew.... you don't have to fight. You can run. And you did.
Do you expect to get the same reward you would have if you had completed your mission?
I'm confused the Klingon's are suppose to be a warrior race with a fur jammed far up there _ _ _ _ _ . <--- You fill in the blank here.
They are looking for a fight.... They flew there cause they saw you were investigating a plant. Looking to confront you about your fly being open... So when you walked up there to find out what there beef was all about.... you pull a phaser out instead of a flower ?.....
rofllmao....
I thought only some of the people in the federation were evil.
The Klingon's just want to kill something like the Hirogen. The thrill of the hunt in killing some poor defenseless life form.
Then there's us the Federation some of us who have alterior motives and want pixilated chicks with big mammories on our bridge crew......

Here we go.

You do if you can subdue them first
