I am starting to lean against a galaxy class exploration cruiser. I can't remember what the other choices look like. Also, are the exploration cruisers larger in appearance than the heavy cruiser and cruiser?

Each ship of a type (science, cruiser, escort) in the same tier all have identical stats and the cosmetic differences are just that--cosmetic. So while a tier 2 escort has drastically different stats than a tier 2 cruiser, all the tier 2 cruisers will perform the same.
As for what type of ship is best, it's up to your play style. I'm playing an engineer in a science ship, but as a tactical officer you could shine anywhere. Your captain skills would most benefit an escort given the combat role, but it would also add some additional punch to a science ship or cruiser.
Am a tactical captain in both cruiser and science vessel and found that either ship can do the job quite well though in fleet action I've come in #1 more often in a quasar science vessel than my cruiser.
