I wanted to write what I thought about this game mainly to show at least Cryptic that it isn't all doom and gloom on these forums. As others have said there are probably thousands of people out there, if not more, who are enjoying the game, and feel no need to crow about it. Background: I played a little DAOC, some WOW, a tiny bit of CoH, and some chunks of Lineage II. By all accounts I would be considered a MMO noob.
Pros: I like the setting of the universe, they seem to have gotten all the systems and borders in the right spots.
I enjoy my ship so far, it feels very star trek, I like the maneuvering even though I am a cruiser LtCmdr. I recall the scene in the final episode of STNG where the Enterprise D attacks with that giant cannon from below, 3D space is fun, and I for one find the inability to do a barrel roll or loop de loop not to be a problem.
I also have a gameplay that is mainly looking around at everything, see what is out there, and not doing much with others. I enjoy the Massively Multiplayer part, but I rarely have engaged in it. So I am fine with the instancing, as I am not getting the short end of the stick from that.
The Patrol Missions are really interesting, as are the main storyline with the Klingons. I really get the feeling that at some point down the road an uneasy peace will occur, and I am excited for that.
The storyline potential in this game is huge and I am looking forward to future developments.
Neutral: PVP, don't really do it, so it doesn't bother me. Perhaps when I try to play a klingon it will, but I won't try that till I have maxed out my Fed char and at the rate I am going that will take at least a month. And then I will want to play a science ship, or an escort ship.
The descriptions of some things are hard to find, but once I did find them it wasn't so bad. Plus the BigBadB's blog about the point values on all the things was extremely helpful.
Gold spammers, I just ignore them and that is that.
Cons: The negativity on these boards. I am a glass is half full type of person, and I am able to be pleased by simple things. The negativity just detracts, yet like a moth going to the fire, I can't help but read these negative posts, and then wonder why our two experiences are so different.
I wish the exploration zones would fill out as you explore them. Even if the whole zone is then instanced on me, and as I explore it (which should either be a solo or group thing, not open to whomever) it should fill out.
Distances are not far enough apart. 5 year missions? Exactly how far out did the Enterprise go? 70 years to go 70,000 light years? The space doesn't seem quite big enough, although I haven't fully explored even 10% of it, just going off of the maps, which while everything seems to be in the correct spots, they still seem too close, or we are going too fast. I hope this is developed more.
I agree with others that I should be able to explore planets if they are there. Sure there are a lot of them, but even if it is just a simple dungeon/above ground exploration, that would be fine. The exploration badges should not just be for space exploration, they should be for planetary ones too.
I also wish that the exchange let you set a min and max price to search by. I have found some great deals, but it took 10 minutes of searching.
Other than that, I am really enjoying the game. And I plan on playing it for a long time, or until they shut the servers down.
