I remember hearing some other people talking about this earlier but I hadn't experienced it until now. It seems that some of my item stats have mysteriously changed. Are they indexed to the ship? Is that why things change? My impulse engines lost 20 from their max impulse setting and my shield gained 600 to its power level. It seems disconcerting that these stats can change so arbitrarily without warning.

There are 3 main things that will make the item values change... 1st and foremost, when considering ship weapons and equipment the base always starts with the ship you have. Escorts take -'s to their base in shields. Cruisers take MAJOR hits to turning rate. To see the bas values on each ship, go to the shipyard and access the Tierd ship databases for the ships you are interested in to compare their systems' base values. For instance, Combat Impulse Engines that grant a turning bonus of +22 Flight Turn Strength on an Escort, only ammounts to +3.2 flight turn strength on a Cruiser.
SECONDLY, Your characters' skills will also affect these values greatly in some instances... The most obvious is in weaponry... Say you have starship Projectile weapons and Starship Photon Projectiles skills.... When you get a brand new Photon Torpedo launcher it will show you the base damage while the item is in your inventory, but when you equip it, (if you have the afore mentioned skills maxxed) there will be a signifigant increase to damage and dps values both.
The funny thing is though that me and my friend are playing and he said he found some engines with a +20 turn rate. I was like cool where did you get them, he tells me all the engines in the exchange are +20. I go look at them, no they are +7.5, we look at our characters and they have the same abilities with the same start options on our characters. We have all the same skills leveled up as well.
We go into a zone and both make a right turn at the same time, we both turn at the same speed. Not sure why but his +20 is my +7.5 go figure. He sees +21 I see +8 he sees +22 I see +9. That is on ship turn rates only. All of the other options as far as DPS flight speed are the same.

You know...that makes me wonder...maybe the "value" prices show up differently for different people too - that could explain why the prices in the exchange are so vastly disproportionate to their value.
