All the BO's seem identical, and thus anonymous. They all come across as computers. No personality and nothing interesting about them. They are boring.
It would be nice if some of them could have a few distinguishing traits that could be randomly part of their character. For example, one guy might be brave and like to yell "BANZAI!" in battle, and be more enthusiastic about the option for combat in the mission dialogue. Another could be gloomy and expect death all the time. There are many other possible trait variations (flirty, skittish, silver/dark lining, happy go lucky, etc).
Even if they were just to use a few catchphrases in battle or on missions that would go along way to distinguishing their personalities and making them more interesting. Someone that grew up hating Klingons could yell out insults or special battle cries when Klingons are being fought, for example.
Ahhh...polish...every game needs it. STO would benefit so much from little touches like this. Hopefully after the major stuff is fleshed out they can get the paint brush out and do stuff like that.
Semi-agree, but I like my BO's and for whatever reason find them distinctive in both looks, actions, and personality. I know that last one is TRIBBLE, but I swear my new Tac BO acts different than my last one, and my engineering BO is very timid. Weird mind tricks and whatnot.
I'd like to be able to tell them to do stuff, instead of ME having to check all the computers and open all the boxes. It would be cool if I could tell one to go scan that anomaly over there while I watch the corridor. Or even have them loot for me.
My Borg skippers harem is almost always attentive to his every command and need. Well, except for the flighty blond science officer that can't figure out how to go around or over a bench. And has problems actually going thru completely wide open doorways. ;(
Now if I could just get the tailor to make them some ToS uniforms like he did for my Borg skipper...

Despite being a strange, slightly disturbing answer, this is correct.
Your bridge crew is as rich as your imagination. They give you more than enough tools in game to give your officers an implied personality and get a good feel for what kind of dynamic your whole ship would have.
Because they occasionally give you mission update popups and speak during ground combat you could have them declare "bansai!!!" as you suggested if you picked that kind of personality, but they'd have to write every bark or mission update in a bunch of different 'voices'.
And that would be an awesome, polished, nice touch...but I'd rather they spend more time on other stuff.
With most MMOs the memorable interactions are supposed to come from other people and TV series that is your own personal story in STO is supposed to come from your imagination.
Imagination is a fine and wonderful thing. With enough of it, you don't have to play the game at all. You can go sit in a cardboard box and pretend you're flying a spaceship. Wouldn't that be fun? Pew pew.
Back to the feature suggestion at hand; good thought. I think there are practical limitations to how much info they can squeeze into the BO code object, but if they're thinking about adding different voices, there ought to be room for a basic personality matrix. There's some psych test with a three or four axis system... can't think of the name of it, but one of the axis is introvert/extrovert. You could squeeze a lot of differentiation in personality into three or four variables, if you were so inclined.

I think my female Vulcan tactical officer hates klingons. I'm not 100% sure, but the two or three times she has fired quantum torpedos at klingon vessels, there have been about 20-30 torpedos in a single burst... And it is only my Vulcan female tac officer. The other tac officer it never happens with...
Not note to self, never **** off my vulcan tac officer, as my main character is a klingon federation officer... Heh...

I wonder about the coding on this as well. Maybe it has something to do with the abilities they're trained in clashing at times, but my BOs tend to vary in their styles, and each plays consistently. My Bolian engineer tends to charge into melee and happily starts setting up shield generators 25 yards in front of the rest of the away team, all while getting pummelled with Bat'leths, rifle butts and whatnot. Back in Beta a buddy had a human tac officer that seemed to spend most of his time cooing at his 3 foot diameter shield-like Tribble (before they got rid of the growing-Tribble bug). Made us sorta wonder how low Starfleet was setting the bar these days. "My...PRECIOUS..."

They're spatially challenged! I need to get them some helmets, so that when the short shuttle drops them off, we're ready for away missions.
This. I hate this feature.
Also I have Human male redshirt named Jefferson. He is really suicide type. Just like the true Redshirt should be. I love him.
