A little confused guys. I preordered the game from best buy based on the lure that this particular store gave me an exclusive tribble and targ as pets. I still have not claimed them but in the course of one away-team mission, I looted 2 tribbles that I can equip and pet for an hp boost.
Does this mean that the people who bought the game from Best Buy got duped? Or is there something special about our tribbles that came with our registration key?
Well, if it was advertised as a "exclusive tribble" pet then you can hope there is something unique about it right? Just a suggestion...don't panic, activate the retail code. Then evaluate and critique, never panic.

You haven't claimed the exclusive, but assume there is nothing special about it, why not claim it and see?
The primary way one gets tribbles is by breeding tribbles, and some types may only be available through breeding. See the following section for details. However, there are a few other ways to get a tribble:
* As a drop: Some NPC Klingon (and allies) ground enemies that you fight as a Federation character have a chance to drop a tribble as their loot. Details are currently unknown, but there are reliable reports of them dropping in ground missions as early as level 4, and possibly earlier.
* As a pre-order bonus: A tribble pet is available as a pre-order bonus from several retailers. Currently known: Best Buy (US), Game AU (AU), Gross Electronic Silver Edition (DE), HMV Gold Edition (UK), Micromania Silver Edition and Micromania Gold Edition (FR). The subspecies is Polygeminus grex rivera, unusual in both color and powers (see sub-species FAQ for details); it is believed to not be breedable.
My understanding of the best buy tribble (though I haven't seen any concrete information on this) is that it has a unique appearance and provides a unique ground buff that no other tribble can.
The best way to find out would be to activate it and see how they compare.
Thanks! I didn't activate it because I wanted to make sure I liked the character I made before I claimed it... but you get one for each character you make?

That is correct for all of the other bonuses, so I assume it is true for the tribble as well.
I have the Best Buy tribble. I believe it gives all three possible tribble buffs at once, when normally you'd only be able to get one at a time. It's very cool. It gives a damage reduction buff, damage increase buff, and health regen buff.

None are as cool as yours.
Actually does the BB Tribble eat all the food in inventory and replicate?
Would the borg consider assimilating tribbles or would they declare war on them like the Klingons?
thats all I have to say
