24 hour silence for recruiting

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I and another officer from our fleet has been silenced (unable to speak for 24 hours in any chat) for simply trying to recruit. Our recruitment message is not large and we do not spam it at any point but yet we were flagged as spammers and silenced (i was silenced last night, the other officer early this morning).

Giving players the opportunity to report spam en mass to players not gold selling is very unwise and very frustrating. Players can just right click your name and report you for simply talking in chat if they felt like it or even if they felt like they didnt like what you were saying. Even rival fleets can gang up on one person and report spam them untill they are silenced.

Being a lifetime subscriber and a long time supporter of cryptic and STO i am very dissatisfied with this. Why should we be punished by game mechanics made to fight gold spammers? If guild recruitment is really that bad why dont you just add a recruitment channel on top of the zone and local channels?

My best guess? A GM type person clicked the wrong name when silencing a spammer.

Just a guess, but I could see it happening as I've done it before.

How do you define "we do not spam it at any point"? How often did you repeat it? Every time you zoned? Every ten minutes? The fact that you have a "recruitment message" at all sounds like spam to me.

first off, lifetime means squat, your reward for the lifetime sub was paying only for 2 years. you get no further considerations or rewards, so stop feeling compelled to include your lifer status in every complaint post (more @ lifers in general)

secondly zone is not the place to advertise, it matters not that you did it once every hour, if 60 fleets announced recruitment 1 time per hour, we would get 1 per minute on average in zone.

ingame chat is NEVER the place for recruitment in ANY game, even if cryptic was lame and didnt include chanels for that sort of thing.

This is a feature that I would hate to be taken away because it is abused. I hate gold spam as much as the next person but Recruiting messages don't bother me and what would be worse if people are just bullied around because they say WoW or feel the need to for some reason make their political views known... sure i don't want to have to read that TRIBBLE so let me ignore them don't silence them from speaking in the game thats just silly.

As was said in another thread about the gold sellers, the process is automated at first, and no actions will be taken against you until you have been reported multiple times. You won't get silenced for just one or two people reporting you.

This is why there should be a recruitment channel.

I support banning anyone who uses chat to recruit. There's a forum for that, go there!

About 1-2 hours if not more and never in the same channel...since ive hit rear admiral i have been doing my exploration missions then flying over to either the sol system, earth spacedock or to another system and posting a quick recruitment message before heading back out to do some more exploration missions (i do 2 missions a day, 3 if you count the new daily) and i try to squeeze some pvp in there when it pops

regardless of what you support there should still be channels in place for recruitment

P.S. we also use the forums

That seems to me like it would lead to a slippery slope. If they ban for recruiting whats next?

    This ^^

The frequency of the rate of the message will have some bearing on it. What may not be a 'spam' rate to the OP could be for someone else. And, were there other fleets doing the same thing at the same time? I've noticed the fleet recruitment messages tend to get popped right after another fleet has posted theirs. Add in 6 or 7 fleets doing this in a zone, and it could get annoying very fast.

Also, with the different resolutions, and adjustable chat window, the size of the message may or may not also be the issue. What may be a line or two on your resolution, could be taking up a good chunk of the chat window on another machine. As above, add in multiple fleets doing this at the same time, and it can get pretty cluttered.

I think it's kinda spammy myself. It's hard enough to have a conversation in zone chat as it is. It doesn't really need people recruiting or selling their gear. I don't think they should get banned for it, unless they just refuse to stop, but I don't think it should be allowed either.

An official policy on this, one way or the other, would help.

what do you mean never in the same chanel? theres only zone, instance, and fleet
recruiting in fleet is pointless, instance chat covers about 1-5 people so that leaves zone

I dont know if you were the guy but there was definitely someone that was spamming fleet recruitment for a good while last night. literally saw the same message every time i got out of an instance and was being repeated every few minutes or more.

If that was you then clearly you were clogging up chat, there are better ways to recruit for fleet members such as on the forums and people that you are teamed with or in the same group instances as. Also personalizing your message instead of looking like a bot helps as well....

    good luck.

This, right here. I, too, run a Fleet, and we haven't been silenced. Why? We don't spam the chatbox trying to recruit.

That being said, I wholly support there being a Recruitment channel in chat. That way, if you're looking for a Fleet, don't filter the Recruiting channel and people can spam it all they want. If you are in a fleet, or don't want it, just filter it and you'll never see it. Then, if Fleets post recruiting posts outside of the Recruiting channel, silence them.

never in the same system at any given hour is what i meant to say. I do post in zone yes (because there is no recruitment channels in place) but i always fly to a different system after my quests then wait till the exploration quest timers to be over and redo my quests

Your entitlement mentality for being a lifer really clouds your perception.

Recruitment in zone is just as bad as credit sellers. As less then 1% of the people who hear it are interested. Besides, if your a decent fleet people will end up coming to you.

Post a thread in recruitment, and leave it at that.

do you have anything constructive to add to the topic at hand or are you here to troll?

What do you all think about recruitment channels for unguilded players? Most mainstream MMOs have them and they work out fine. If you are unguilded and dont wanna see the recruitment channel you can just turn it off

To the Op: Exactly how often were you posting it?

If you were posting it more than 2-3 times a minute, thats spam.
If you and your fleet member were collectivly posing it more than 2-3 times a minute, thats spam. You may not like it, but thats how it is.
As another poster pointed out, the inital silence/squelch is automatic. Once a GM investigates and see's that you are not a spammer, you will be able to talk again with no repercussions.

Then you probably just caught a bad break. Someone, or likely several someones, got sick off all the recruitment messages, and so they just reported everyone who sent one. The review saw that you had been repeating the same message, and flagged you as spam without looking at the timestamp. It's unfortunate, but I'm not disinclined to agree. But I don't care much for recruitment messages, either.

I think that must make the Cerberus Task Force a decent fleet, as I personally have had 7 people come up to me in the past 24 hours asking to join.

I never post recruitment topics. The only way to find out about us is through Fleet Registration here, and on GameFAQs, where people are actually stupid enough to think that, since I named it Cerberus, I MUST have taken it from Mass Effect.

Just in case any of them are here, I didn't. I didn't know there was a "Cerberus" anything in Mass Effect until last week, when that all came out.

The problem with that is usually within about 2 minutes of posting your guild thread....it's already fallen to the next page. :D

What's needed in there is a sticky thread, where you post your guild details, and contact info.

The closest to spamming that my Fleet is recruiting is in my sig. And it's a simple line stuck in there.

I have had troubles after recruiting random people in the past...Now I pretty much leave it at that, and only invite people I have direct contact with...generally.

I did spam when I was forming my fleet...just needed 2 people, as the rest of my guild wasn't planning on coming to STO....But once I got those 2 people, I think I might have done it one more time...but haven't since.

Now we've gotten several members of another SWG guild (MANDA from Starsider) that the Ryders are friendly with over here, and they have joined the Ryders :D

General recruiting messages help you build your guild fast....but I've seen many of those implode quickly.

How long would it take to add a Recruitment Channel? 5-10 Seconds? While your at it, can we have a Help channel as well, not that we ever get tired of hearing Where's Sulu every 10 seconds.

Trying to recruit in game doesnt make a fleet good or bad...its the people. Regardless of how you recruit someone (and we dont bug the TRIBBLE outta people to recruit) it should be the guilds choice of how they want to recruit and the ways to do it. Cryptic should see this and just simply add a recruitment channel.

Covenant of the Phoenix has been around for over 10 years and spans across multiple MMOs (since Asheron's Call and SWG) and recruiting in game is just one of the ways we get members. Not everyone reads a forum but are looking for a good fleet to join. (we do also have recruitment threads on multiple forums aswell)

Unfortunately the ones asking "Where is Sulu" are probably going to not find a Help channel either....

after reading the posts here and my own experience in game and with other mmo's.
the one kind of spam i can not stand is for gold selling.
spam for guild recruitment or people legitimate trying to sell their items in chat versus the exchange i can live with as long they aren't over doing it. but the solution is a simple one.

just do what has been done in all other mmo's the dev's add two global chat channels one for guild recruitment the other a market. if people are looking for guild they can turn that one on same with the market place one.

oh,, still report gold sellers with avengengence! and make it that we can challenge them to a pvp duel and if they dont respond they are pvp flagged and we can kill them. any one up for gold spammer hunting?:D
