I've reached admiral rank and as a cruiser captain i've decided to go for the most maneuverable impulse drive, so after visit the exploration vendor at sol starbase ship yards i was met with a cannundrum.
There are 15 total MK X impulse drives to choose from, grouped in to 3 types
Combat-Impulse Engines (efficient at low speeds).
Hyper- Impulse Engines (efficient at high speeds).
Impulse Engines.
with 5 versions of each type with varying cruising speeds/full impulse speeds and maneuverability.
At a guess i believe the efficient at high and low speeds refers to how much power drain there is to your ship depending on what speed you have a tendency to travel at, hence cruisers with slow turning speed requiring to be at half impulse speed for the best results and then the opposite for Escorts, since an escort will often fly at full speed, there fore will want the Hyper-Impulse.
Am i way off in understanding this, or am i correct? I think personally creating so many variations of Impulse is a little much.
tips, input and advice would be much appreciated thank you!
I'm not an admiral yet so don't have access to play with all of the different engine types however I tested the three types available to my at commander and here is my conclusions. Sorry no hard numbers as I'm not in game so I'm going to make them up.
Also things to note full impulse = max throttle 100 engine subsystem power, throttle and engine power are two very different things. Hyper and combat are effected by engine power not throttle.
First off you engine power does not effect your turning speed, your aux does. Therefore the modifier hyper, combat, standard have absolutely no impact on turning. So if you're looking for turning go with the one with the highest +stat to turning.
so all that these effect is max speed at max throttle. and they vary their effect based on how much engine power you have. at max throttle with 25 engine power your actual impulse speed would look something like this: (assuming the +stat to speed was the same on all)
Combat: 11
Standard: 9
Hyper: 8
At max impulse full engine power your impulse speed would look something like this:
combat : 14
standard : 15
hyper: 17
So with a combat your max speed is lower and your min speed is higher hyper is the opposite. Hyper will get a little faster at full impulse because you have your engines set to 100 by default.
Having said that I find that when in combat I actually prefer to go slower and usually set my throttle to 25-50 the only time I want to go fast is when fleeing or at full impulse to get to my next target, when I'm doing either of those I set engines to 100. Therefore the penalty to hyper at low power is minimal and benefit is great. I much prefer hyper and laugh at the escorts that go with combat just because it has the word "combat" in it, if they are running combat and I'm hyper once we are both engaged with engines at 25 there is no noticeable difference as our turning rates are similar and they are trying to match my slower speed. If they try to flee I can catch them, If I try to flee I leave em in the dust.
My advise pick the hyper engine with the best turning modifier. hope that helps.
