Just let me say that I'm enjoying this game immensly, however I am wondering where this glorious Genesis system is that was talked about so much pre-launch. There was supposed to be a feature where we could discover new planets and name them ourselves. What's the status of that?
No such naming planets. Not something I've ever seen on any article. But the Genesis system is the algorithm they use that randomly generates maps, spawns, and missions for exploration and patrols. It allows them to make 'new and exciting' content with minimal back end work.
Genesis tore itself apart at the end of STIII:TSFS.
Doesn't mean that the star isn't still there, but there shouldn't be too much to see.
Would be fun to go to Ceti Alpha V and see the ruins of the Botany Bay though. Or the "Genesis Cave" in the planet the the Regula space station orbited.
Genesis is an offline tool allowing the devs to create bulk missions faster. They used it for months.
The exploration missions produced by Genesis are in the game. You can find them in the star clusters (Delta Volanis, Arucanis Arm and Hromi for the lower levels). Contact Lieutenant Grall to get the exploration mission : he will ask you to explore three uncharted systems in the star clusters.
Genesis was supposed to generate a lot of missions for almost infinite content.
I think the OP is asking of what genesis promised, which I would also like to see. Right now, we have a few mission variants with some random elements (planet envorinment changes, enemies change a little), but it is hardly what was promised by Cryptic.
I hope they get on it quick, not sure how long the game can go for with the current features.

Of course most game developers and consumers realized toward the end of the 90's that randomly generated content fails to deliver entertaining content on the first or subsequent playthroughs 99% of the time (I can only think of one example where randomly generated content actually worked well in a game).

I've done lots of those missions. Maybe I just had a different idea of what that system was supposed to do.

A lot of us had a different idea of what that system was supposed to do. Actually, I consider that the exploration part of the game is a failure as it is now. Many players have suggested ideas to improve things dramatically, for instance :
Add fauna and non-hostile NPCs on the planets
Add skippable minigames to simulate science on the planets
Add the possibility to return later to the planet
Add the possibility to use some diplomacy skills with the inhabitants
Add more diversity to the missions (scan 5 things is not interesting enough)
If you agree or have others suggestions, you may want to post your ideas in this thread :
The devs are using it as one of their main source for feedback and already said that they will work on what we post there. Your suggestions wouldn't go unnoticed.
