Fire Cage - the Horror

Or, the tedium. The utter, utter utter tediummmmm.

Jeez. I spent two hours on this mission last night. It went something like this:

Mission was all fine until I visited Bajor and entered the Fire Caves.

Started walking around. One of my officers decided to leap into the lava below. Oh dear.

Found that the other officers were so horrified by their comrade's death that they refused to walk on the gangways above the lava. At all. Their pathing AI completely shut down.

Started solving the problem by setting rally points at every turning on the gangways. Sometimes this worked, but at other times even setting a point more than a few metres was enough to scare one or two of my officers, so I was down to teeny tiny micro-managing their movements for the rest of the mission.

Fought through the first room, only to find another. I thought "oh great, how long is this nightmare going to be?" and checked the map. Five rooms. Greeattt.

Made it to the third room. Got fed up with waiting for my officers so started to solo the enemies. Another officer dived into the lava. Oh dear.

In the fourth room I found a hostage. I freed him, but then was knocked out. I called for help but no one came (surprise surprise). I respawned.

You have GOT to be kidding me. The respawn took me and my squad back to the beginning of the map. For bonus points, the fire barriers all came back up, but with all the enemies in the first 3 rooms dead there was no way to lower them and progress.

Restarted the mission by beaming up and down again. The map and enemies reset, but somehow the single hostage I rescued didn't reappear. I therefore worked my tedious way thorugh the entire mission again only to find that it was bugged and i couldn't get into the final room...

Restarted again. Same thing, except this time when I ws knocked out and respawned I found myself in the third room with a closed barrier on each side of me, completely trapping my team in both directions.

Restarted again. Got to the end of the map, but when I killed the last enemies the last barrier didn't open.

At this point, I started shouting at my computer, and reflecting on the futility of life in general.

I sent a STUCK petition. After 20 minutes, a GM arrived. They told me they could move me to sector space or spacedock, but could not help me complete the mission. I thought that was just stupid, since in City of Heroes the GMs regularly help me complete genuinely broken missions.

I declined the invite to be moved.

I was moved anyway. I was moved to....wait for it...

...the Klingon Neutral zone area of sector space!

I was like..."WTF???". The GM sounded very confused and worried. It turns out that a different GM accidentally moved me to the Klingon sector instead of some other player. My GM apologised, then departed, and i was left with a looooooooong trek beck to Cardassian space. Lame.

I decided not to start AGAIN, and instead I finally agreed with the idiot outside DS9 that I would go do his random Undine hunt mission instead.

After that, I totally dropped the Fire Cage mission and restarted right from the beginning. I was careful to never be knocked out, and finally completed the thing despite once again losing two officers along the way to suicide and having to guide the other two as if they were victims of shell shock.

Oh what fun. This mission needs to be looked at again, unless the intention is to bore and frustrate players to the point where they start knawing on their own face.

Unhhhhhh. I now know that Fire Caves map so well I could draw it in detail, including the enemy spawn points and hostage locations. Worst mish EVER.

I lost my away team in the first room on the first walkway. I waited for about 10 seconds then went on with the mission on my own. I'm an engineer and had quite a few toys to help me along the way though so each part usually involved a cover shield, phaser turret, shield generator, support drone and seeker drone. Tedious but it got done.
