i saw it in the 70's and its still the best of all the star trek shows, its goofy sets the melodramatic acting, the music, pure gold! all the new shows while great were just imitating the original. Without kirk et all there would be no st:ng no ds9 no voyager no enterprise, as great as those shows were, i always missed the reckless cavalier attitude of kirk, spock's corner smile hidden in logic, macoy's southern charm, and scotty's miracle work. Oh and the skirts All the other shows were polished , paled down bland lets try to please everyone remakes.
you actually mean 1964 when ST first came out and it was Captain Christopher Pike in the chair.
This got cancelled after the 3rd series but returned in 1968 and became the show we know today.
I actually don't like ToS (only the films) and was not born till the 80's so no I didn't see it.
But this is no bad thing lol
your a bit off actually pike was only in the pilot of the show, after retooling the show a bit, it went on air with the original cast for 3 seasons when it was cancelled in 69 (66-69)
Curious how many "oldsters" are here. I am 58 and watched Star Trek - The Original Series when it first came on TV in 1966 as a 14 year-old.
I was super-interested in the show already, though. I managed to see some of the second season. By the end of the network run, I was five years old, but that was still too young to stay up for the third season 10 pm "death slot" - even on a Friday night...
I was, however, allowed to stay up all night along with the whole family to watch the moon landing the next year - watching Star Trek come true on live TV.
I still love TOS the best, without a doubt. They had so little money to make the show, so they made up for it with style - and damn, did they have style on that show. So much out of so little...
They had the best music of any ST series, as well. The shows from TNG forward had this amorphous music trend going that I never warmed to... nothing even remotely as compelling or as memorable as the Doomsday Machine march or the "countdown/going back in time" cues, for instance...
I didn't catch it first-run (born in '71), but it was the first sci-fi I ever saw.
i was bron in 71 also except DR Who was my first sci fi i watched and ST was the 2nd
These are what sparked my imagination into the Sci Fi scene in first place
was born three months before Star Trek ended it's run, watched it a good bit growing up in the 70s and 80s, finally got around to seeing the others in the last couple of years, work got in the way.

I'm not sure I read what you're saying clearly. The first "pilot" movie was "The Cage", completed in 1965 (although the copyright was dated 1964). The network requested an unprecedented second pilot, which was "Where No Man Has Gone Before", in which Shatner replaced Hunter in the role of the captain in a re-tooled setting. The series went on the air in 1966, was cancelled in 1968 after the second season, and after a large (for the time) write-in campaign, was revived in 1968 for a final third season (that ended in 1969).
I actually don't like ToS (only the films) and was not born till the 80's so no I didn't see it.
But this is no bad thing lol
I recommend giving it a chance. The show definitely has low points, but when it's good, it's very good.... and I think you'll appreciate just why it spawned a 40-year franchise.

Not quite true, Pike appeared in TOS episode "the menagerie".
/geekmode off
I may be wrong, but I think the waving goodbye is part of the original movie - it's an "illusion" Pike created for Vina.
Well Pike did not create it, and the important lines in that episode are that people do not accept a cage with illusion, even at the cost of death, a common thing in human history.
And the line, she has her illusion, you have your reality, showing that some people do accept illusion contradicting that same point.
So why some and not others, those who need illusion think they themselves are ugly, and can not see themselves for who they are, they must have an illusion because of what they think they are. Those same people can not stand the look of themselves in the mirror. Because they think themselves ugly without there own illusions.
I find that really deep.
And I choose reality in a world of shifting illusions. But the reality of what I know to be true, that others call illusion because they may not have experianced it in the same way as me. And I may think they are in illusion because there reality is from their own set of experiances I have not had.
I was 2 when the series first aired but got into it through re-runs by the age of 8. By far my favorite of all the series'. Captain James T. Kirk rocks. Had high hopes for Next Generation when it was announced...However...Pcard was a bit too diplomatic, and Ryker was too much like a watered down version of Kirk. I liked Worf but he turned out to be just another red-shirt, though, being a klingon he got better after getting his butt handed to him every other episode. And therere wer too many 'mind game' episodes. It got better with the Borg and The Klingon civil war.
DS 9 was okay voyager was completely forgettable and 'enterprise' while entertaining messed too much with the history.
TOS was just cool beyond words. Abrahm's relaunch captured the feel of TOS even with his little tweaks. Got all nostalgic after seeing it.
I was born in 68, but yes, I saw it first run, my mom watched it when she was pregnant with me, and when I was a baby, they could always get me to calm down by putting me in front of the TV when it was on true story.
I watch a couple TOS on first airing, I was younger and they scared the TRIBBLE out me..
I really started to like TOS in syndication. I remember when the local independent station just got some more episodes to add to they selection they had (I think it was Season 3). Before it got back to Station, A hurricane hit, and the truck went to the transmitting tower. The tower lost contact with the station, so the truck used whatever it had in truck to broadcast. All it had was the tape of prior days a Tampa Bay Buccaneer Pre-season game and the new star trek episodes.
We had almost a 2 day Marathon of Football and New (to-me) Star Trek Episodes. No commercials, just the radar feed in the bottom right corner. I think I really started being a Star Trek fan then.
Yep...I was ten years old in 1966..and we just got our 1st color tv and I watched it religiously..and I didn't become a rubber eared Convention goer in the 70's and 80's either...lol...;)
Comments
Back then the episodes gave a "detective story" feel and I used to watch them with my grandpa when I was very little.
I haven't even completely watched TOS because honestly I don't like that series very much.
My fav ST character is still the doctor from the voyager.

Fell in love after seeing TOS bein re-aired in my childhood. Looked at TNG then and after that..followed it all.

And Spock's theme on the bass guitar - brilliant!

Beeeeeeeep.
The Menagerie was made using the original pilot. The only new Pike footage is him in the wheelchair and waving goodbye at the end.
Also old enough to have seen TOS during it's first run and have been geeking on it every since.
dam your a pilot man, I wasn't even twinkle in my mothers eye then lol

YAY! a reason to re-watch the pilot tonight.. My wife will be calling you ... hehehehe.

I'm sorry, I did not write that clearly. I meant "it is an illusionary Pike created by the Talosians for Vina."
I can see how it can be read to mean something else - sorry!
Woot! '71 FTW!
Hey, it's a love story (in a way) - get her to watch it with you!
