OK so Im level 12 and I ghost the forums a lot and from what I have read and responded too Ive been told NOT to invest points into phasers and torps because of anti protons and something new. I also shouldnt invest points in tier 2,3,4 ship class specialties, like escort class or cruiser class because it doesn't have any effect on the last tier ship. Can someone please respond and help me out before I waste more of my skill points?
Blah, okay, it's your game, play it how you want. You want to power up your photon torpedo's do it. There is not final score. If someone has a tritium-neutrino-deathdealer-cobolt-ninja-assassin-quantum-gigawatt-slingshot that blows up every borg cube in a sector whenever they sneeze, good for them. But if you get the same thing and don't find it fun to use, then what good is it. The game is about having fun, do what is fun when you are online now. I have a cruiser with 6 phasers on it. Sure some other things do more damage, but I think it looks cool as all get out when I light up a romulan with a beam as wide as my ship.
1. Lt Cdr ship skills help all ships in that class (e.g. all Science Vessels)
2. The person going on and on about tri-cobalt and anti-proton *invented* a dev post to support his point. I wouldn't take him that seriously. That said, you want to think ahead a bit before investing in a specific weapons type.

There is a lot of truth in what you say. I just don't have a lot of time to devote to the game already and when I join a fleet I would like to contribute positively. It's already going to take me a long while to get to level 45.
well... what else are you going to spend your points on? Keep in mind, that while the skills aren't super useful at the end, they are useful now if you are using beams. I am only lvl 12 too, but if the skills are like the previous rank I maxed out all of them except 1, when given a choice. So, plan on the right now, the present, what are you using now.

I have invested in phasers 100%
I have a level 3 cruiser with 6 phaser banks and I rip apart EVERYTHING.

Go with what best fits the way you like to play. Ultimately it is your subscription fee that pays for your account, not anyone else. What someone else says they do may not necessarily be best for you, if you have a differently play style and set of priorities.
And yes, I have points into phasers and beam weapons for my ship. I play a science ship, and enjoy my subsystem targeting, and my phasers give me a small bonus for that.
Also, you're assuming that the person telling you about the points in the tier 2,3, and 4 ship classes is correct. They could be, they could not be. And even if they are, it is up to you. This is also assuming that if this is true, it's not a bug that is due to be fixed down the road.

Phasers are a really good weapon though, and photon torps are decent as well [I personally use quantums, but that's me]. Currently, the last tier weapons aren't as great an idea because the skill cap keeps you from really maxing one out [although you don't need to max one out, they just perform alot better when you do ].
Don't put skill points into any Captain [ShipX] skills.
Captain Cruiser (only works for ships that are Lt. Commander rank)
Captain Heavy Cruiser (only works for ships that are Commander rank)
etc. etc.
Save your points for the Admiral level ship skills.
The only one that works for all the ships is the "Starship Command" skill.
Bzzt - wrong answer.
The tier 2 skill (e.g. Cruiser captain) affects all ships in that line. It's only the tier 3, 4 and 5 skills that only affect the ship of that tier. Even those have some use because they buff some of your captain abilities (for example, training up Heavy Escort Captain improves Attack Pattern Alpha).

You SURE about that? As I understand it "Cruiser Captain" affects ALL ships that are cruisers, and it is only after Lt. Commander, with the more specific ships, where you have to specialize.
Yeah go with whatever you think youll like the most. Phaser/photon skills will cost you less points, allowing to put more points into other things at the higher ranks since you wont be spending them on chroniton or plasma etc. They all will do the same amount of damage over all, for the most part. So pick wich color you like lol. Im going with plasma/quantum myself.

Don't believe everything you hear, fits most circumstances.

This is correct.
To the OP there is a lot of BS floating around these forums. Info on skills isn't easily listed for comparison but it is there in game to some extent. I'd recomend looking at the skill purchase screen in game and reading the discription of each skill and then also right clicking each power on your character to see what effects what.
Just take whatever you read here with a grain of salt and check it out ingame.
Put points in Phasers. They will be your bread and butter weapons well up into Admiral, and each Antiproton weapon takes 7 Marks to get, and you only get 5 Marks a day. You do the math based on your ship, but what are you going to use until you get all those Antiproton weapons? Besides, what weapons are you using since level one, probably phasers since you can pick them up on the cheap for doing a few exploration missions (unless you fly escort, then they seem to give you more choices).
Now as to the other skills
Unless you just grab BO skills on "what is cool" you'll start finding patterns to your BO skills. Like I'm heavily invested in Sensors, Sensor Probes, and Deflectors So you know you're going to put skill points in there
After that, you have to put points in skills anyway to level up, might as well be something you're going to use, even if its only for a short period of time.
Now that said, no you can't just put points everywhere, but a little planning and you'll suddenly find you have a lot more points then you think you do. I personally dislike Chroniton and Plasma Torpedos, can't use cannons. and I don't use tractor beams, so I know I'm not going to put points in those skills.
I used tetryons for like three levels, so I have points in there. Do I wish I had those points back now, yes, but I don't see them as a waste of points, since for three levels they assisted me.
Find what you ENJOY, and skill out based on those skills. Just don't try and be a specialist in every skill, it won't work.
I'm nothing but phaser and quantums and I'm doing very well in my Defiant. The lower tier weapon types are more skill point efficient. The upper tier weapons are for gouging knuckleheads on the Exhange.
I do not have a suggestion about what to do. But I do suggest you avoid taking advice from min/maxers (unless that is your preferred play style). Several guys have mentioned just do what is fun and I agree. If you want to tailor your skills to a fleet get in one now and your mates can help.
