It starts in all games. Scams, cons, and hacks. There are many ways to combat this. First player education. Secondly the new key stones that companies like Blizzard and SquareEnix have invested in. This is ONE tech that i believe MUST be adapted into STO to help the game.
These keys are either iTunes Apps or key chain dongles that randomly generate a passcode that is required to access and mondify the account. This helps aid in security as only the account's owner has access to the changing codes.
This has recently come to my attention as useful as an inactive account from a game i use to play has been stolen and reactivated by a mystery 3rd party. This hack i have no way of knowing how it happened.
Please impliment new ways of protecting and recovering accounts before STO players start to get robbed.
This also works both ways, one of my guild member in WoW got his account hack and the hacker got an authenticator for the account. I haven't heard from him since, but I would imagine it would involve a more complicated process to get the proper owner back into the account then if there was no authenticator.
players wont get robbed if they use some common sense....oh wait i just realized what i said
but seriously, have long passwords, DONT buy gold or visit thier sites EVER, have antivirus/firewall software active and DONT have your username and forum name the same.
gonna have to be a pretty dedicated person to hack an account as long as you take some pretty basic precautions.
Yeah, most players get their passwords stolen because they do idiotic things, like use easily remembered, short words. I know no one would ever guess my password. I mean, c'mon! Who would ever think 'th1$1$@j0k3' was a password?

Gold farmers aren't the sharpest tools in the shed and I think currently they haven't realised how worthless energy credits are.

I always make sure that passwords don't mean anything as well or contain words as they can be brute forced or dictionary attacked
