But no being serious here for a moment have you tried creating another character and seeing if you can function normally? - I'd guess you probably have.
I would also guess you've restarted your PC. It's a long shot in the dark but is your keyboard a Microsoft branded one? I once had a "Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro" which would do funny things to game controls unless I had the drivers installed, though only after I had alt tabbed.
A firewall wouldn't selectively block movement anyway. Try this, in the chat window run "/forward 1" and see if you move at all. If so, its probably that the key presses aren't making it to the client.

i was asking if they had a firewall on that would be limiting or blocking the loader not the keyboard
The minimum specs. for the game list SP2 as a requirement. Perhaps you should think about finally installing it. FYI, many newer games now require SP3 too.
allthough the requirements say XP SP2 i would recommend installing SP3 and running a full windows update
you should at least insall SP2 if you can find it and windows update, there have been a lot of updates to XP even between sp1 and sp2 any one of these updates could be causing an issue with how STO works. there have been several changes to how XP handles network traffic
even if you install and say well that was a waste of time youll still be one step closer to finding a solution
youve alraedy said you cant move forward or back but can you make your toon turn on the spot or move sideways?
youve also said youve not got a virus but have you scanned for malware and spyware.some spyware and malware can also have unpredictible effects on your pc try running your usual spyware tools and try running malware bytes antimal ware
As has been said already... [astonishment+lol] You have xp, you only have SP1, you dont run a firewall, I can't even begin to imagine what else you are doing to cause yourself problems.... and you wonder why there is a problem.. [/astonishment+lol]
Besides that, what about pressing both mouse buttons at once? or pressing R, that should make you autorun. Other than that, no idea. Stop living in the past re: updates.
Yup your should keep your PC up to date. but i had this same issue, I have a Logitech G15 keyboard. its fine with other games but STO I couldn't walk/ run/ whatever with my char, i updated the drivers from Logitech's website, and i haven't had the issue since.
Try using Left/Right Mouse button at the same time. Holding both down will make your character run forward. Also, in Keybinds, there should be an auto-run toggle (which actually might be what /forward 1 sets), you could try that to see if Auto-run will work. It's pretty strange that roll will work but not run.
OP is probably running SP1 because he's not using a valid copy of Win XP. There is no other reason to use anything less than SP2 on an internet connected device.
Have you moved your throttle slider forward? Or hit your full impulse power key?
He can't get to the ship part yet.
To the OP. But I would recommend maybe clicking on the safe mode option in the STO launcher options. Also make sure you go into options and reset any controls to default.
First step to solving any problem with a PC game is always to make sure everything is up to date.
Service Packs, DirectX, Drivers (and when I say drivers, I mean all of them. Video card sure, but also sound, network, chipset, etc), everything.
I say this for two reasons: One, it's good sense. If the game is new it isn't so unreasonable to assume that the game will be making use of the newest software technology. Second, because Tech Support is not going to help you with anything until you do. They'll ask you, "Did you try updating your (whatever) drivers?" If you say "No", they'll say, "OK. Try updating your (whatever) drivers and see if that fixes it."
If you're going to attack Tech Support, best to do it with a fully loaded weapon. The weapon, in this case, being your computer.
I also cannot move, and have previously played STO since launch and never had so ridiculous a bug. Typing /forward 1 and /forward1 runs me up against an invisible wall. Any workarounds CodeRanger?
If it happens again, try checking to see if you have any other controllers/input devices plugged in (gamepad, joystick, 3D mouse, etc...) and unplugging them.
Some game engines tend to accept input from any device it sees plugged in.
(I've had some games become unplayable when they insisted on using input from my 3D mouse...)
Also, please remember that if a thread has had no activity in greater than 30 days, it's highly suggested that you start a new thread. While you may think you have the same issue as some long ago reported bug, most likely that issue has been solved, and you are experiencing something new, with similar symptoms.

try binding the movement to other keys.
Yes the Installer is fail, not your firewall or the 50 other things that could be wrong with your computer,
Plug in a different keyboard.
if that doesn't work reinstall
Yep, not my firewall cause i DON'T HAVE ONE ON.
And i've tried the other 2 things, i don't know how a different keyboard would effect me not being able to interact with objects

you dont have a firewall?
well you are smart

Enjoy living life dangerously...? They're up to SP3.
I have a firewall, i just don't have it on, genius
you might want to update your SP1 to SP3

also you should be able to move forward with both mouse buttons held down.
but i suspect we will see the problem when you post your system specs.
See, that's just wrong. There are a lot of people, myself included, who have ISP's that block bittorrents.
If it's still there, use this. Still takes a while to download everything, but you should have better bandwidth. It's the patcher.

Yes i am a genius, but not for understanding the most BASIC parts of internet secruity but for my noble prize in EPIC WINZ
Therefore your point is mute
and i find it funny how you say you have no viruses with a 10 year old OS that has never been updated and no firewall.
That's because he only plugs it in when he is turned on; and right as he gets connected and about to send a packet he unplugs.
(of course we all know that doesn't protect from a virus, and occasionally your packets will still make it through)
