Senior Member - Suggestion

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I've been paticipating on the forums since Open Beta, like many of you, and have been surprised at the number of posts written by "Senior Members" that are full of venom, hate, idiocy, appalling attacks, and slander against the Op.

From my point of view the Senior Members should be those who newbies can look to for good information presented in an encouraing way. Now, I will concede that there will always be a bad apple or two ... but I think the ease of which one becomes a Senior Member, currently, has led to the title being relatively valueless. I think all one needs to do is post 100 times and their title becomes Senior Member (50 posts for Member). I would like to suggest that this limit is much too low.

I'd like to see one of two things occur - either the Senior Member limit should be drastically changed (I'm thinking 1,000 or more posts for SM, 500 for M) or the title should be replaced with a post counter. Either of these options, I think, would be a better indicator fo the value of the posters remarks.

If I made 5000 posts in ten forward, would you still value my opinion on game mechanics? "Senior memeber" is nothing more than a post counter, don't make it out to be something it isn't.

Quantity is not the equivalence of quality.

I think people are smart enough to figure out when someone is being helpful, and when someone is just being a troll.

Granted. But quantity is (can be) an equivalence of time/effort spent in the game. As some have pointed out there are ways around this (and any) system. I'm just looking for a better one then the existing one.

Personally, seeing a Troll listed as a Senior Member is - imho - a very poor game advertisement to a noob player.

MMO forums are never a good place to look for helpful people. It is 80% trolls for the most part. (yes I pulled that number out of my butt) Many players that are happy with the game will never come to the forums unless there is a problem with the servers. Others just join into the mob mentality and jump on players as noobs, hardcore, fanboi and on and on.

It would be nice to see helpful people on the formus more. But you will find much more help in game by joining a fleet and asking players in your fleet. Ofc in STO it is much more difficult to find a fleet for a noob because of the lack of a social hubb in game.

Has a rank on a forum ever mattered?

I have never valued a poster based on their rank or post count (back when we had it). I never shunned someone completely because they are an ensign...I have always judged people on their ability to rationalize, their open mindedness and their contribution to the conversation.

Most people on this forum should focus on the quality of the post and nothing more. If you find that same quality is always present with a certain poster great...

We (senior members) are not here to hold this community together, pick sides, win battles, slam people, encourage or anything of the like. We are no more or less special than someone who joins today.

Every voice has merit on these forums so long as they are constructive and reasonable...we are all customers of Cryptic and players of STO...we are all the same.

And to any senior member who thinks they are bigger or better than anyone else because they have been here longer...

"If this is truly the only way you can feel special, or powerful then you need to reevaluate your life and spend less time on the interwebz."

    Respectfully,

but with most of the games they play, like the coke machine game / reason for killing the person above you / rate the avatar / sig above you, threads forum post ranks have become a joke really tbh.
