They kind of need to redo their skill system NOW. It's not a fancy content thing that can wait.. it's more of a.. base gameplay mechanic thing.. raise the cap, redo the tree so it is easy to understand what the hell you are putting your points into, and streamline it a bit more. As it is right now you might as well be blindfolded while you do it.
If you want to know how to do a good skill tree look at Star Wars Galaxies during the Pre-NGE era. Any time from its launch to the end of the Combat Upgrade will show you a good skill tree system.
Also, I'm sick of the idea of respecs. The skill tree isn't built for a skill cap. Respecs won't help and as broken as it is; you'll have players doing it all the time. Which Cryptic wants because it wil cost real money.
Now whoever is going to post, "available from missions in game" doesn't know how difficult Cryptic will make it to get the freebie from Cryptic. It's very difficult to complete the respec missions from CO. I expect no less from STO, so players will go the easy route and spend 1000 Cryptic points.

Well, get used to it. Cryptic wants that extra money, even though respecing is a basic function in MMO design. Very greedy move on Cryptic's part. Does not bode well for the future. Hopefully, they will reconsider this path.
Either the cap needs to be raised/removed. Or the skill system must be completely redone. Im voting for raised as this game will die by the time they can develop/test/implement a new skill system.
I was very dissapointed by Cryptic's decision to put this cap in. It an obvious attempt to milk more money out of us, which leads me to wonder if they themselves believe this game will last more than a few months. Either that or someone in charge is an idiot. Because breaking your own game in an attempt to make more money by exploiting the playerbase is one of the stupidest Ideas Ive ever heard of.
Ive said it before and I'll say it again. This is the big leagues Cryptic. You took on one of the biggest franchises out there. There are a LOT of Star Trek fans out there, and if you mess this up thats a lot of ppl who wont give your future products a second thought. Much bigger companies have been felled by much smaller losses of customers in the past.

QFT.
The treatment of this game will make or break Cryptic for years among a surprisingly large number of people. I wouldn't want to be in their management shoes right now. The stress must be intense.
What are they going to do about this? I loved this game and working full time reached a skill cap in two weeks .... I would like to see fast action on resolving this conflict. Having great admiration for this game and star trek; this game that was once like crack to me now is but a bother in my life... What do we do? Start over?????
With one company failing at launching this game I would think that after the great sucess of the movie lifting the great name of star trek back to what it once was that cbs paramount would make sure that even in this horrific economy (actually especially now that a game like this is a great way to spend a lot of time on a little buck) would put 110% into making sure that they were ahead of the game. One would think from the beta response that they would have been.... How hard is it to write more missions??? This game could still be HUGE if resources are spent asap to further its greatness. PLEASE go all out and make it game crack with no end!!!!!!!!

I agree, especially with the fact that the new items are only antiproton and tricobalt... we need skill redesign or more skill points.
