A Star Trek Online Wishlist

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
OK well, here's a first post since I started playing the game (a few weeks in beta as well).

Up to this point, I've seen enough to want to make a wishlist, so I figured I'd go ahead and give it a shot. Others can join in and add their own. The goal here is to make a list that can only add to the experience of the game, and with a little luck, they'll listen.

This is all about constructive criticism and suggestions, so let's get on with it. And forgive me if any of this has already been said.

In no particular order:

* "interacting" etc... is the bane of my experience. I'd like to know
what the heck I'm doing, and in fact, I'd like to actually DO the stuff
with chances of TRIBBLE it up. Maybe I have to remember a code, or
perform something in a certain sequence. Maybe by interacting I can do
-other- things like switch force fields on/off at will to control the
effects of things. The advanced interacting doesn't have to be the
-only- way. I understand that there are MMO junkies who want to do the
MMO just for the sake of it and forget about the "complexities", but I,
as a -thinking- individual desire more for the experience. The "go here
- click, go there - click" is not the experience I was hoping for, So,
there should be an option for your preferred "experience" mode
[basic/advanced] Where basic is the "go here - click, go there - click"
experience, and the advanced just gives you multiple dimensions more of
depth with interacting with the game environment.

* EVERYTHING in the environment should be interactive! This goes along
the lines of interaction. In starbases and such, there are display
panels with things you could potentially do, BUT, you can only interact
with the ones they tell you and only "interact" with them mostly. Well,
that's not good enough. If there's a panel somewhere, I want to DO
SOMETHING MEANINGFUL with that panel. I'd like to be able to walk up to
a wall panel on a starbase and, say, get the location of an in-game
character or perhaps even a player's current whereabouts. How about
those -other- crates? I'd like to see what's in those. Why can't I pick
up rocks and throw them? With making the entire environment interactive,
you can set up for doing and experiencing SO much more. I like the part
about having to blow up some doors, but why can't I phaser other stuff?
Maybe I could phaser the wall and leave a mark (albeit temporary).

* When we use the turbolift or open a crate, how about showing the doors
and crates <gasp> OPENING! Now there's an idea =)

* I dunno about you, but when I think about weapons modifications, I'd
like to actually modify my personal weapon with options kinda like your
starship's consoles.

* how about letting our default costume display override what the armor
looks like so we don't have to go through the modification every time we
change armor? If we want to adopt the new armor's color and appearance,
then let that be on us, but at least let us keep our initial look free
of charge regardless.

* cinematics. yup you heard me. LOTS of it. Call me an old salt, but I'd
like to see the "unveiling" of my ship and the "launching" of my ship
when I first get one, AND ship. I'd like to see the "docking" of my ship
when I dock at starbase with some nice accompanying music and perhaps
voicing of docking procedures. And of course, in-game mission/episode
cinematics. You guys are REALLY missing the boat here. Cinematics are
part & parcel of startrek!

* how about being able to WATCH your ground and space battles after
you've done them so it appears like an episode? It's kinda hard to enjoy
all the stuff going on when you're too busy running for your life
sometimes =) and besides, it'd be a really cool way to show a previous
battle to a friend. Sit back, grab some munchies, and watch the home
made episode =)

* voice acting? ATARI made how many millions already? How's about we
splurge on some various voice acting for anything and everything? I'd
like to HEAR my bridge officers thankyouverymuch!

* facial expressions. We've got "stance", so how about facial
expressions? And perhaps being able to customize those too =)

* manual alert status changing. I'd like to be able to change to red
alert on my own. It allows for many options in situations like being
caught off guard or having a bad reaction in a diplomatic setting if you
go in with weapons and shields up. The same goes for ground: how about
some issues where the locals don't like it if you approach them with
weapons drawn? Otherwise, why have the options to holster your weapon at
all? Oh, and hey, how about having bad things happen in those diplomatic
settings instead of it always going right? If you forgot a weapons
protocol, then you might find yourself in the middle of a shootout.

* how about a little "choose your own adventure"? Like I mentioned
before about things going south in a diplomatic setting, well, let's say
that's how you'd prefer things to go if ya catch my drift. I know
there's the main "story" (if that's what you call it frankly), but I'd
like to forge my own path of things too.

* a little character cosmetics: We've got SO many alteration options,
but I'd like ti chime in on a couple more. Right under the chin,
connecting to the neck... it looks a little like "frog throat" under
normal circumstances =) Can we have an option to change that perhaps?
And who knows, maybe someone will MAKE an actual frog throat =) Ears...
yup... where's the modifications for those? I'd like to see options for:
base width, mid width, point width, top-down angle (low to the shoulders
or way up high), forward angle (meaning do they come straight 90
degrees out of the head or do they follow the line of the head). I know
there's many types of ears / headpieces, but let's have some options for
those.

* I've seen some surface changes when my ship takes damage, but I think
we REALLY need to turn this up a few notches. The shown damage should be
dynamic based on what specifically you sustained. I've never seen my
warp nacelle get blown off or suffer the effects of losing said nacelle,
but I'd like to.

* I don't like the fact that my ship has an absolute up and down angle.
It's real 3d space, and I'd like to do a backflip if I want damnit!

* get rid of the grid lines in the "map overworld" and spread things out
a bit. Further, you're supposed to be at warp out there, so when moving,
it may be a neato idea to make the stars go into "warp mode" to give
that appearance. Oh, and by spread things out a bit, I mean that
everything shouldn't be so darn close to the ZERO level that the grid is
placed on (I'd like to travel waaay up and waaay down), put some worlds
below the plane. Allow the display of the grid plane if people want it.
The same goes for the pathways.

* do fleets get their own CUSTOMIZABLE starbases? I think that would be
a great idea. I'd also like to create a fleet even if I'm just 1 person.
Customize how? well, in appearance, internal layout, functions, and
defenses (because, having it get attacked and needing to defend it would
be really cool!).

* all the other races need to be playable too, but I imagine they're
planning on that... riiiiight?

I'll probably add more thoughts as I continue playing, but I figured this was a good start.

So, feel free to comment if those are good ideas and add your own.

No flamewars please.

All good ideas, the gridlines dont bother me I kind of like them... but im linear..;)
I doubt they will do it , but fleet starbases would be awesome.
Im all for interactive objects and more animations.. which i bet allready are planned to be added but not a launch date priority.

    Hey whitestar

Nice ideas : you may want to post them in this thread :

A dev posted there and said he finds it handy and well organized. Your suggestions wouldn't go unnoticed.

Hmmmm I wonder... only 3 ideas in each short/medium/long term category? just 9 ideas total? I've got WAY more where this came from hehe =P

I understand what you're saying though. I'll try to get something out of this list to put in there, but I was kinda hoping the post wouldn't go unnoticed regardless since this was the feedback category after all.

This is one of those games that's too big to let it get screwed up, so I'd like to make sure the developers have the ideas to make it much better. I so badly want this to feel BIG and EPIC and CINEMATIC, and at the same time immerse the player so deeply in the environmental experience that you could spend hours in just one spot.

I dunno. I'm an oooold star trek fan. I just want this to be everything it could be and then some.

I feel compelled to add more =P

    * Ship deck plans. You should be able to spend lots of time INSIDE your own ship.
Every deck, fully detailed - not just a few token rooms mind you. You should be able
to go to the quarters of your bridge officers or your own quarters, the lounges,
sickbay, engineering, hangar bay(s), storage, astrometrics, science labs, arboretum,
etc... You should see other misc crew walking the corridors, be able to interact with
them, etc... You could even access game functions like EXCHANGE or weapons,
kits, commodities shops on-board. You should be able to do LOTS of things in
your own ship, not just "visit" the bridge. And maybe, even make the internal
appearance of the ship a bit customizable too. (there are geeks out there who have
made full deck plans of ships on their free time, so I think ATARI can handle getting
a PAID staff to do it for all kinds of ships... and hey, even make the stations more detailed)

    * the full ship deck plans allows for a home away from home feel, and it also
lends to this: a great "being boarded" experience. And think about it like this, what if you're
being boarded during battle: you give command to another bridge officer, then you go
with a team inside your ship for some hand-to-hand, during all this, you experience
the ship getting pounded from the outside (you know, like large booms, getting thrown
around the corridors/rooms, power failures, things blowing up inside (and needing to
    "fix" those things)

    * how about being able to take one of your "shuttles" instead of beaming down? You know, perhaps
manually piloting the shuttle to places your ship can't get to or transport to. The shuttle
should be fully functional with rudimentary shields/weapons just in case. There should
be different types of shuttles too that you can acquire for your shuttle bays, and depending
on size of ship, you can have either no shuttle option or up to 3 or 4 ranging from the
tiny little ones up to the runabout.

    * oh ya, I almost forgot... Hair... you've got a million "short" styles, but only ONE long style?
C'mon guys, if I want my girlies to have hair that goes alllllll the way down to their feet, then
I want that option =P (and I DO by the way)

I'll add more as I compile more ideas =P

    in fact here's something else:

    * about memory alpha: Let's try it like this, Instead of us looking for stuff in general, give me
options for making things I want. Let me specify how I want something to be modified, then you
tell me what I need to bring to you so you can "research" it and make it for me. There's LOTS
of potential here. Imagine making special starship shields the way YOU want them?
