It seems to me that if you guys at cryptic would go get a subscription for Star Wars Galaxies and look at the mechanics for flying and space combat and even the planets this game would improve 10 fold. But skip skills and classes they dont know TRIBBLE about that stuff. But their space combat is wicked cool.
First, I'll admit I haven't played SWG since about two weeks after the Apacolypse...er...NGE...went into effect.
But SWG space combat was fighter-based and primarily twitch-based. Yes you went up skill trees, but that was more to open up access to better fighters and equipment. At the end of the day it was a space-sim for fighters. A pretty good one too - not great, but good.
STO is supposed to be about capital ship battles - tactics, firing arcs, etc. If anything, make it more like SFC 3 (which it is similar to now anyway).
you mean get an swg sub so you can see what not to do with a game. Swg was a great game with the original dev team. The exec's and new dev teams ruined that game so much its just a disgrace.
They sent me an email that if i resub i will get a free stuffed animal toy and they're having another lame ewok love festival.
i thought xwing, tiefighter, and xwing vs tiefighter were all funner better games than JTL. except for the graphics they were superior in every way.
I see you never flew a y-8 "gunship" into pvp with a jukebox playing the canteena tune on the bridge and a full crew danicing around like madmen watching the pretty explotions errupt around them as bits got shot off and the lone elite mining cannon chugging away. I still remember that wookie running around on fire after a plasma leak exploded next to him.
I completely agree, JTL = fail , more fail and extra fail.
This > SWG
mole
or someone has a hardon for cryptic. either way, you're a moron. I give this game 6 months tops. SWG has been running, with regular updates, for almost 7 years.
space combat in STO is clearly based on the SFC series. anyone who has played SFC can see that very quickly.
the controls in STO are simpler(more intuitive), and SFC games didn't have special abilities per say. but the gameplay is very similar.
Yeah similar, but SFC I and II (didn't play III) were BETTER. Far more tactical. I'm not saying STO's space combat sucks. Other than being too easy, overall it's the only thing the game has going for it ATM.

i find most of the tactics i used in SFC2 to be effective in STO. just not as much clicking or micromanaging of power settings, overpower, etc. and more forgiving weapon arcs.
I guess I should have said it a little bit better.
JTL's graphics of space were superior. I loved flying around in that space and it really did have a good feel for space and the planets were not as small as these it seems all the planets are the same size and have no real size. In JTL the planets looked really cool and it was just visually great. As far as the fighter and capital ship goes yeah in JTL space you might survive 2 seconds lol here in sto the fighting is a little slower.
What I did feel in JTL is the smoothness and I didnt have to go in these weird circles but fighters can make tighter turns too so that is probably why I felt that way.
I just know that if anyone can make it a perfect space atmosphere I hope that Cryptic does with STO because it would be nice to have that relaxed feeling of warping into a new area and you really dont want to leave because you want to kill baddies and the planets look cool. For those of you that played SWG one space area I am thinking about in particular is Endor. Man the green coming off that planet was nice and the space was space it was big you really had to travel that is what I fear this game is missing they are afraid almost of stretching it out and sticking some bad guys in there so we can get some loot.

You forget 1 thing in JTL you fly a fighter which is about 1/20 the size of a starship in STO most of the Star Trek ships weren't even able to land on a planets surface because of their size (some episodic exceptions excluded offcourse) so it is only reasonable to say in STO planets look smaller, and graphically STO is breathtaking on full detail, and the planets do have different sizes.
You're being terribly naive if you don't think the developers of this game looked at pretty much every MMO out there, and especially SWG.
Did I say they didnt? You can look at whatever but unless you actually play it you wont get a feel for it. And its not naive its conversation if you havent noticed I have been throwing out topics just for discussion instead of coming on here I quit because my lazy TRIBBLE is gonna buy another game and ***** about it until this one is fixed LOL. I don't doubt they looked at it though but like anyone else that has never played an MMO if this is their first space encounter they may think it is top notch and its not bad I guess I would like to see a feel from other games brought over I mean these companies rip off everything from each other any ways why not get a feel for that space.

ahhh true true and i do run sto on full detail I guess I am not getting the visual im looking for. That does not mean it is terrible though I still think it is a great looking game there is just that one thing in space I guess I cant put my finger on it that I would like to see.

You mean that space combat where the one wins who first shots ? Or the large empty spaces? Or the corvette and the star destroyer which you can easiely exploit? Please dont do this cryptic...if you need an inspiration use bridge commander or x-wing alliance....but never ever swg space combat.....

HAHAHAHA no that is not what I meant lol there is something in that space that I guess I cannot put my finger on that I would like to see in this game but if they have their own engine im sure we will be fine. I know a couple of people have mentioned a couple of things I never thought about and now I can see where it wasnt all that great but I never really had many problems in space but I ran solo alot so I wasnt exploiting anything. I would go out and just do loot runs because it was relaxing. But then again any game is exploitable even this one will be so put that on your list of games not to use in future games

what a waste of energy
Feel the same way. SWG original was good with potential, I bailed when the combat upgrade and jedi jedi jedi.
In regards to op, you cannot compare the two. SWG was twitch fighter combat, I did try out the multiplayer ship and it royally sucked... just a slow moving target. AVOID.

I would bet you any amount you'd like that multiple people at Cryptic have played SWG, and every other major MMO. Except I doubt you could pay up.

They got a huge boost after you left and they became awsome to run around in. They added the big gunships after the NGE but by that time I was too fed up to keep playing:(
Yes SWG is different game to 2005 ITS A MMO - stuff changes...
I have played from 2003 and continue playing SWG as there is and wont be for some time ANY game out there to match the complexity of its crafting / resources / beast master systems.
combat is awesom and yes its BUFF central, it what makes players come together though, and the only prob i see Ig right now is the lack of players to make the dynamics work...
But shock news, you dont have to buff ***** it and PVP all the time - the content they addded and continue to add are YES buggy but great after patch .2 etc
I still love space there as original post said STO devs could learn something from SWG, and i for one hope they do develope space from the current reopetitive cmbt that it is....
I as you can tell I love SWG, and STO for the fact its a fun very different gameplay experience
See, I'd agree with the OP for different reasons myself. Space Combat isn't one of them. This should be more like the SFC games; not JTL. In that regard I think, as someone already said, that the X-Wing and Tie Fighter series of games are far more superior to JTL. If they'd had a clue they'd have ported those directly into SWG in my opinion and said to heck with trying to make the ground game incorporate into it in so far as crafting, etc. It was mainly suppose to be about stock ships with things like Freighters being your mod ships. At least for a "classic" feel. But I digress...
I think taking a look at crafting and the social sandbox environments are what would be a good thing to look at myself. I'm specifically talking about player housing (starbases, some permanent planet settlements, ship related interior housing... for a STO feel) and how the crafting could have dedicated crafters over the random loot drop/vendor approach. Not saying nix Memory Alpha... but certainly expand on crafting so that we could see some specialized player crafters.
But I could nitpick all day about the pros and cons of robbing this or that system from SWG... and it'd wind up extending to trying to figure out the "best of" mmo mechanics to incorporate into a new game. But there certainly are things that wouldn't hurt as long as they were not the main focus of the game. Buff bots? We really don't need that... it's a trap!

you mean the whole maybe 10 planets you get too visit in SWG? the same maybe 10whole planets that have been there for years? That are nothing more then full of houses now
Plus the space combat is not that great anymore since the game is dead
Try finding some non-pre teen gun boat crew who doesn't get bored after 5 minutes and you will see what i mean

no no, that wont work with startrek. But the planets would work out great.

Killed a cepter in that thing...
Fun times:D
Star Wars combat = figher plane combat
Fighter plane combat in Star Trek = FAIL

I'd say they should have bought a copy of SFC (any version) and learned from that.
