It's not because of the lack of content, or the non existent customer support, or even promised yet undelivered pre order bonuses, but because of the community both in and out of the game.
On the forums, there are more troll posts than constructive posts. In game, every starbase, every sector space is overwhelmed with large amounts of arguments. You can't go anywhere in this game without someone putting down someone else. Someone asks a question? They get bashed, or called a crybaby, or newb. It's annoying.
And no, you can't have my stuff. I may renew again once they start taking action against accounts who disrupt gameplay, like they do in other games.
Guess what. Every single MMO has a community like this. Go check the biggest mmo in the world, and check their community out.
The problem is, people think they are anonymous on the internet and can do what they want.
One thing you need to understand is, just because YOU dont like what someone is aying, doesnt mean it's wrong or against the rules. If you see something, for example, racist, sexual remarks, outright disgusting remarks, add that player to your ignore list, and report them to a GM.
Guess what. Every single MMO has a community like this. Go check the biggest mmo in the world, and check their community out.
Actually, not all are like this. I've played most of them (WoW since beta, EQ1/2, SWG PreCU/CU/NGE and others) and there community is no where near this. Not to mention, action is taken against accounts which act poorly ingame. Here, is a free for all.
I'm afraid you will not find a nice, mature, community in any game. There are a lot of immature people out there. So what do you do? You group up with people you want to play with.
I have a window with just fleet chat, nothing else. That's what I have open most of the time. I go into zone chat from time to time and try to help some newbies out. However, I know that this is the nature of these games, and there is very little that can be done to change that. So it does not bother me anymore I guess.
Haven't you seen the WoW chat in cities lately? Same thing.

I too have played WoW since beta (stopped playing about half a year ago) but I disagree with the WoW part. The WoW general forums were some of the most awful forums I have ever come across, second only to the dreaded off topic forums.
I honestly don't see that many arguments in game, but then again I play during off hours because of my job, so maybe I'm just missing them.

maybe its because you are used to a certain kind of server and now you are forced to deal with others...
I just have chat turned off most of time.... in all my years of gaming i have never seen a bigger bunch of twits, dweebs and idiots. And the idiocy repeats about every 5 minutes when new people zone. And the chatter about the gold spam... you would think they were boiling puppies alive the way some people go on. And stop telling me to holster my weapon....the only relief is getting to play with the powerlevelers in DSEs away from the other zones.....I keep hoping that every rank will weed out the stupidity but it doesnt.
But once again... you may just be used to a different kind of server where everyone is uptight and reports and ignores like they are eating a bag of chips.....

my friend I'm going to be honest with you. that is the worst reason for leaving.
my friend all MMO launches that I have been in like this. let me tell you how it works, the first month you have you're free subs, but after that they normally fall off. then it get more normal. yea there are still going to be trolls, but there will not be as many as there are now.
just give it time, all MMO go through this. also the Ignore button is you friend, and normally for the first month of a launch I try to avoid that game's zone chat.
The way ppl really want to be, comes out on the internet. No masks here. If they want to be a jackass they will be, a jackass.
If they are a nice friendly person, it will always come out.
Sadly you learn on the internet there are many more of the former.
Oh yea, 2 1/2 years playing WoW, THAT has some childish ppl. The bigger the community the more these ppl stick out. Sometimes I think it's because they compete w/ each other lol.
the original EQ probably had the best community that I can remember.
Anyway, maybe join a fleet that you like and just turn off gen chat ><.
I played Aion a while and did it like that. Between childish arguements and gold spammers..yea.

OP, I am going to agree with the kat.
New MMORPGs tend to have pretty chaotic forums and posters who are nothing but negative along with a few reasonable folks in the mix. That being said, I feel your pain. Negative forums can drag down anyone's enjoyment of the game and in-game chat can be incredibly depressing.
I still can't believe how many times I see "wHere's Suluu?". You know, the guy standing in the same room with Admiral Quin? One has only to turn around and there he is! There are even npcs in the space station that talk about where he is... and yet I see that question a ton in chat.
My advice is to minimize chat and take a breather when it gets too annoying.
Slightly off subject. The best community I have ever been involved with was Fallen Earth. That game is not for the weak of heart and requires some serious thinking to master. I found them to be a helpful and mature bunch. If you want an old school RPG/MMORPG experience, I highly recommend the game.
The worst? Age of Conan forum; the amount of drivel and drama on their forums after release were beyond anything I have ever seen. It was like someone took a bunch of 12 year olds, hopped them up on sugar, gave them a busted toy, and then let them post online about it. Drove me away after about a month.
Anyway OP, check back in a few months and see if the drama has dropped off a bit. Until then, take care.

I think a big difference with STO is we are all on one server currently. In other games you have different server types which can make a huge difference in the community.
Forums are forums. If you need examples go to WoW's general forum and look around for 5 minutes.
I've seen what you are talking about in chat and much of it revolves around; gold spam, questions like, "Where is Sulu?" or "Where is x sector?" People really seem to get worked up about telling others to use their map to find things. But whatever, I usually answer the questions and ignore the turds.
It really is the nature of an MMO community.
It's unfortunate to hear someone would quit a game for this reason; but to each their own I suppose.
lol don't start on eve. Honestly this is one of the tamer mmos. Sure there are the spammers, but there are a lot of helpful people in there too.
DAoC had one of the best communities I remember back in 2002. But I think the best time I've had to date on an MMO was Asheron's Call 10 years ago. I remember the monthly updates with new scenarios and kids didn't have credit cards and gold farmers didn't exsist. I think the closest I saw was people selling hoary mattekar robes on e-bay.
But naturally the market wasn't saturated with MMO's yet so it was all shiny and new. And I am getting off topic a bit in nostalgia.

SWG absolutely had this in the first year. I played SWG from Beta 2 all the way up to the NGE (and quit 2 weeks after that debacle). I can *still* remember a whole guild on our server that did not hing but grief, harass, spawn camp, spout racists stuff in-game, etc. They did that for almost the first year of the game with only minor punishments. It wasn't until they discovered a duping bug and duped rare drops, holocrons, rare crafting materials, etc. *and get caught* did SoE finally perma-ban these folks.

Ahhhh, Asheron's Call. My first MMORPG.
Nobody did a better evolving storyline than Turbine back then. And you had complete freedom to build your character anyway you wanted... for better or worse.
I think I still have my lifestone around here somewhere.... and a few pyreal...if the Lugians didn't sneak off with em.
I tend to agree all MMO's have basically the same "level of maturity" in its subscriber base..............That being said this game is an exception to that rule.
Without a doubt the most childish and immature player base I've had the misfortune of playing a game with.
Chat is just horrendous.
You can't ask one question without being jumped on by 10 very immature people..(I wont say kids, because I don't believe all the immaturity is from the young players)...
No doubt about it, Star Trek Online chat makes WoW barren's chat seem down right intelligent.
are you kidding..... one of the main reasons many people didnt play. Most up tight bunch of pearl clutchers micromamanging everyones behavior.
/shrug, I remember a lot of ppl that would help ya out n stuff. There were some punks, and lame ppl that would camp mobs and try to sell "loot rights" and carp like that but, overall, I mostly remember friendly ppl. Even the gm's there were friendly and helpful.
Maybe it was the server you were on? I was on Saryrn.
I used to think all the servers on these games would be the same, but I switched from one to another in aion and noticed a signifigant improvement. It is usually just a few ppl that like to start carp and act TRIBBLE, and they draw out others of like mind, imo anyway.
As it has been stated already, all these online games, not just mmo's, have chumps.

the point is we all find different things annoying. Many of you posting here are the types I would generally try to avoid in game or would leave teh server i was on in disgust...
The zone chat is just that ... zonewide. It's not like you're dealing with all of the idiots in one zone on one server; it's like all of the idiots in that zone on every server. Imagine any other game out there, with people spread across several servers. Take the number of idiots on any given zone, and multiply it by 12.
To be honest, both the forums and the server chat are more full of whiners than jerks, but even if you couldn't stand either, it's still not as bad as the others out there. Try the AION forums. Or EQ2Flames, since the official EQ2 forums are very heavily policed. Or hit up some FPS forums, like Left4Dead, CoD, or the Battlefield forums on EA.
It's not because of the lack of content, or the non existent customer support, or even promised yet undelivered pre order bonuses, but because of the community both in and out of the game.

Tips:
Turn off Zone chat
Join a cool fleet (link in my sig)
Socialize with people who act civilized
Work that /ignore feature as necessary when dealing outside the fleet
That's what I've been doing for the most part, although occasionally I'll step into Zone chat to answer a question or two.
I cant believe your letting these trolls win...
You are giving them the power to tell you what games to play and what not to. Ignore the aholes and report them when you feel they are out of line. Man, I couldnt understand quitting a game I like just because of the trash talking trolls
Best game forum Ive ever been on was a game called sword of the stars. but thats not an mmo. I have yet to see a game forum that has good ppl to talk with.
EVE's official forums are rules with a iron fist by CCP... Ive gotten temp bans for referring to a corp named Band of Brothers (BoB) as BoD (Band of Developers) instead. THEY called it trolling lol
I happen to think it was true but thats besides the point.
The internet and online games give people a sense of freedom through anonymous contact. There is no social penalty for being rude or inconsiderate - especially rammifications you'd see in a real, physical setting. Because of this fact...
Doesn't matter, still ironic and still a troll post even if that wasn't the intent. Whining and ragequitting because he's upset by what random people say on the internet or a chat channel...I suspect OP won't be missed.
I have set up a tab for fleet only, and I use it all the time, I only go to zone if im stuck on something, that is it.
If I start seeing immature typing and such, I simply add them to my ever expanding ignore list.
The forums can be pretty ridiculous sometimes, but I really haven't noticed much of this in game. I see people talking about completely inane stuff, like whether Voyager or Enterprise would win in a fight, or if Worf would have made a good Wookie, but mostly people seem to be enjoying themselves.
Occasionally, I'll see a negative comment about the game or some bug, but it's usually civil.
It's not because of the lack of content, or the non existent customer support, or even promised yet undelivered pre order bonuses, but because of the community both in and out of the game.

All joking aside, there are still some really good people in there. Just look for a mature fleet of adults, you'll have fun. That's what I did.
