Retail key and "you are not allowed to log into this server at this time"

When I try to enter my retail key there comes up a window where it says:

You are subscribing to:

* Star Trek Online - Retail
With 30 free days

and below there are several options to enter:

Recurring Subscription
$299.99 USD Lifetime
$77.94 USD Recurring 6-Month
$41.97 USD Recurring 3-Month
$14.99 USD Recurring 1-Month
Non Recurring Subscription
Game Card

Do I need to buy a game card to be able to play and use my 30 free days?
I as everyone else have been getting these messages "You are not allowed to log into this server at this time". I thought that I might not be able to play because I haven't bought a game card. :S

Please help me with this:eek::eek::eek:

You have to set up some sort of subscription method, you will not be charged before your 30 days is up so if you cancel before 30 days Cryptic won't get another penny from you.

This is a fairly common practice among MMO's.

you will need too, if you want to play now i would suggest just using the paypal option, if you like the game then go and get a game card in the next 30 days and then change your payment method from paypal to game card (via website under account)

Nearly every game requires some method of billing on record to avoid abuse.

oh great. Well, i want to play my first month before i decide to get a subscription. Contacted support about this issue. if it is not possible, then i guess i will give the box with key away to a friend who might want to get a subscription.

The labeling on the box and all retail sale points is quite clear -- subscription required. You must subscribe. You can, of course, cancel your subscription before your free play is up.

Am I the only one who interpreted that as: Subscription required AFTER your purchased time runs out?

No, others did too. But I'm not quite sure why or how

'Subscription required to play' is pretty straight forward and to the point after all.

Well technically that is the case, if you cancel you account during your 30 day trail then you won't be billed another cent and you will still get all 30 days still. Again this is almost the norm in the industry rather then the exception.

It was written like this: "Subscription Required - 30 Days Game Time Included With Purchase". To misunderstand it that way, you'd have to think they were deliberately being confusing. (After all, why wouldn't they say "Subscription Required After 30 Days" or "30 Days Game Time Included With Purchase Then Subscription Required" or similar?)

just to give you another option - you can buy pre-paid Visa/Master Card/American Express pre-pay cash cards @ Wal-Mart and use one of those as the credit card to hold the subscription open while you use up your 30 days... -- this way, if you choose not to play, you can use it for something else besides just game time here.
