Just curious if you think we will see player housing and a good vet reward system. I mean the vet reward system beyond a few emotes and such. I don't want to compare apples to oranges but Star Wars Galaxies had the one of the best player housing communities and awesome vet rewards that was used to display various things in your house. I would love to see that in STO.

Vet reward Im all for, but player housing?? Rarly did you ever see a Trek character at home, their life is Star Fleet and thier home is their currently assigned ship. Private quarters may have some possibilites, if for nothing else to show off some of the trophies you have collected in your journies.
I think the ship should be the player housing. Maybe if they let us customize the bridge, ready room, etc. Buy furniture, or add functions and panels to the walls, etc.

Well DS9 wasn't on a starship. Just saying.
But i'd personally be fine with just a captain's quarters being added at some point. Maybe a holodeck to replay old missions on.
vet rewad system i would venture a guess we will see it in the coming months. your ship is your housing and i figure we will see more improvement in that over time. I don't need to see every hallway crew quarters or jefferies tube on my ship. I will be fine with a ready room, conference room, captains quarters, Boff quarters, holodeck, medlab & engineering. most of these could be connected via turbo lift (boff rooms have a hallway connecting them conference & ready room off bridge)
Each of these rooms can server a usefull purpose;
Conference room: RPing meeting with multiple players and planning out a mission.
Ready Room: also RP on a smaller scale than the conference room.
Captain's Quaters: to display your fancy shinies!
Boff quarters: for crew based minigames and places to pick up quests from Boffs (another idea i'd like to see)
Holodeck: allows you to replay your favorite missions and maybe one day make your own.
Medlab: for crafting hyposprays and stuff.
Engineering: for crafting everything else.
come of these rooms require other changes to the game which is why i would say they would come after others. right now all we need is the bridge because we cant interact with many object right now.
I beleve that Fleets should be able to Construct their own starbase in the middle of space, or by a made up planetoid (like in exploration) where the leaders can enter the base, add shops, Shipyards, Customise rooms/items, Even add Defences for Fleet Vs Fleet Action. This would add an awsome aspect of the game you would not normally see in online games. And Unused fleet officers, (ones we dont want/need) can be deposited to wander around the station or defend it if it comes under attack for a ground assault in Fleet vs fleet, also it can be used to operate its controls and make it work perfectly well. If they implemented this, it would turn this game from being Lame, to OK. At the moment there are alot of problems (even though its has been launched) and I belive things like this can turn the game around.
I would like to see themes, such as "Asteroid Starbase" ,some federation baces, Klingon starbases, cardassian, even a small Planet base that can be upgraded using ALOT of credits, merits, exploration badges so the whole fleet, even thoes not a high level, can contribute.
In more detail i would like to see shops such as Commodities, Weapons, Shipyards where we can create our own ships to defend the starbase. Adding Habitat rings where crews have their own area to deposit their items or display them. With this each starbase can be utterly Unique and independent from eachother. And why stop there?
I already feel like my ship is my home, but of course I would like to see this expanded. A captain's ready room is the logical choice here as far as a place to display trophies accumulated. It would not be that difficult to implement roght now because your ship's interior is instanced so we won't get the clutter effect from a housing system like that found in Star Wars Galaxies.
I'd like to see some sort of reason or benefit to utilizing these areas.
Galaxies:
- Required players to sit in a bar or medlab and watch PC entertainers in order to be healed from death related injuries.
- incorporated many building types into the crafting system.
WoW:
- Allows players to "earn back" xp dept incurred from dying at an increased rate after spending time in town or an inn.
I think that there is room for STO to find some sort of mechanic like this that is flavorful and not game breaking. Make there be a reason to socially congregate.
As for ship interiors, I believe that they should be incorporated into the missions. Most of the episodes take place on board the ship. There should be plenty of possibilities for missions.

Well, okay. During Beta the Devs and players were talking about a number of things and several of the above ideas were bounced around. One thing that was latched onto early was expanding the ship interiors: we have bridges now and there was talk of expanding that and eventually even having episode content happening aboard ship. There was also brief mention of creating Starbases for Fleets but I think that idea has gone to the deep back burner, at least for now.
STO needs lots and lots of things before it needs housing.
If housing is purely social, sure.
However, you can make housing into a persistent hub, the centerpiece of more content additions and modifications.
Want a sector space alternative? Welcome to Stellar Cartography.
Want player generated missions? That's called the Holodeck.
Want more developed ground combat or a cover system? It can start with designing ship interiors for combat and allowing you to place seemingly cosmetic terminals and hubs to create a cover path for those missions when your ship gets boarded or taken over or the crew gets infected with a virus.
Want more "Trek"-style missions beyond kill X enemies and catalog X anomalies? Say hello to Transporter malfunctions and other shipboard mayhem.
Want crafting that goes beyond stopping by the Memory Alpha upgrade store? An R&D team waits for you in Main Engineering.
Want immersive ten man raid combat with strategy? Howabout 10 mans with 5 people boarding an enemy ship and 5 people engaged in a space battle, with the actions of the two teams influencing eachother in realtime. (Damaging the ship blocks a corridor with debris. Your boarding party sabotaging a ship system causes a debuff to be placed on the ship which your allied ships in space can exploit.)
Want the ultimate in crew with customizable traits? Say hello to the Emergency Medical, Diagnostic and Command Holograms you create with a mix of holodeck technology and ship systems.
Tired of the same maps and mission environments? Make your own on the Holodeck and in designing your ship interiors.
Feel like there aren't enough persistent environments in game? That's the promise and potential of your ship.
Want more visual progression in game? Howabout ship interiors that have custom cosmetic display options from achievements. Anything from trophies for the ready room to an exotic warp core. Fantasy games change your armor and outward appearance with progression but it would be more Star Trek for your ship interior to reflect progression.
Want a death penalty? Howabout one with a combat rez that involves beaming your friend to your ship before theirs explodes to save them the expense?
Ship Interiors: Player Housing that's at the heart of everything you want the game to be, whatever that is.
Well, okay. During Beta the Devs and players were talking about a number of things and several of the above ideas were bounced around. In place of Starbases for fleets, which sounds problematic to me on a number of levels, I'd suggest three things:
- You should have to be in close range to board a ship under normal circumstances.
- There should be a variety of compelling reasons to visit people's ships.
- Members of fleets get "subspace transporter networks", allowing them to freely move between fleet members' ship interiors. Maybe even when your buddy is offline, you can visit and even do missions like repelling a Borg infestation on your fleetmates' ships. That takes map customization to an almost spore-like level, giving you access to other player's customized ship interiors as mission locales.
Personally I believe that the turbolift on the Sol Station should take you to a "fleet office" or "fleet headquarters" where there could be a meeting area with a table or two and chairs, personalized living quarters etc etc I think it wouldn't be that hard to make an instanced area for each fleet that doesn't have to be consistently spawned unless someone is in it. I think if we examine concepts that our game uses vs other successful ones like when you look at STO and Guild Wars... everything is instanced out the tail end. Why not make an instance for each fleet that you have to have fleet access set to to access like I said as in a specific deck on Sol or another starbase, maybe even planets like the "for fun" planets like Vulcan and Risa or Andoria. Frankly I think we should have it on New Berlin on the Moon but that's just me. Secondly if you look at other popular mmos you will see the purchasable and customizable guild hall. If we can pick from several locations as to where to put it that would just be even more player loyalty to this game. A lot of people have been talking about wanting customized rooms on their ships and picked from all the normal hot spots you find on a ship... this seems like a reasonable request as opposed to those who want an ENTIRE EXPLORABLE SHIP because that's ridiculous. Frankly if I had 24 explorable decks I would go to 7 spots other than my bridge - my quarters, my ready room, my holodeck, my armory, my mess hall, my engineering and my shuttle bay. The rest is just pointless. So maybe if you want to add just a couple accessible areas for us people with fleets of people who like to role play that would be GREAT but if not... well there is a whole role playing community in Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force.
I don't really see much need for this for now; at the moment we need the (already planned) Klingon update, and the raidisode stuff, plus any other beneficial content patches before something like this is looked into.
However, its obvious they already have a perfect system for 'player housing' in whatever form they take it, as they have the 'Bridge system' where you can invite people. I would hope/think the logical step to address "player housing" is to make the ship 'walkable around' and have Crew Quarters, Ten-Forward, Holodeck (imagine the Enterprise ship shown in the movie), and whatnot all available as a 'playpen' of sorts for you and your friends; with minigames or something in Ten-Forward, and maybe other entertainment options.
Just curious if you think we will see player housing and a good vet reward system. I mean the vet reward system beyond a few emotes and such. Extending the bridge so that we can go around the entire ship is one of the easiest things Cryptic can do.
All that is required is to design the interiors of the various ships, they aready have the building blocks, which consists of the walls etc.
In fact it is so easy they could get a couple of IT students in to do it as a project or something lol, and I am surprised that they didn't add this in for launch, but i guess they had to prioritise.
What we can do on our ships is something else that needs to be thought out.
And I for one would like to be able to auto travel when on my bridge when in Sector space.
We've already seen a number of ship interiors that could be connected together to form a rough ship interior, including the areas from the tutorial which includes transporter room, the hallways and cargo bay area, the hall and control room where the borg were located, and the engine room at the end of the tutorial. There are also interiors from the mission where you board another ship and defend it, the mission where you end up in the shuttlebay, etc.
I can see them stringing these together at some point.
I put this in another thread, but I think they should make the Sol system permanent outside of Spacedock... and take the rest of the solar system that they're designing from Mercury to Pluto and add various permanent bases and housing stations around those planets or on the surface.
That allows Spacedock to be relatively manageable for new users and users who just have to go see Admiral Quinn or take care of a few quick things, and then give buttons similar to "Warp to Sector" that let you take off quickly toward the Lunar colonies, Mars, Jupiter Station, stations around Saturn and its moons, and even a few bases scattered among the asteroids.
If you want that community MMORPG feel, you can frequently visit a particular Martian base where your other friends or fleetmates congregate, or stick to Starfleet HQ down in San Francsico.
If you want the quick instanced play, you can just visit Spacedock.
If they released a "level editor" for use with building holodeck programs you'd solve a lot of content problems as you'd have no end of new levels. You could sell them on the exchange and have and ecomoy around them or just do swapsies.
I'm sure the community would come up with some nice alternatives to what we currently have and would solve some problems with the game getting stale becuase of the same missions over and over again.
I'm sure this has been discussed before, it has so much potential.
and what can you do on the bridge? No decorations, No Functions, very limited customization. I am talking about having a player "quarters" or living area that you can totally customize and display achievements or vet reward items, etc. Maybe something along the lines of player ran Starbases.

And Hopefully, soon to be, entire ship with a fully stocked bar and holodeck=)

EVE has that.
Yes it does, but I hate ever for various reasons.. I want STO to have this.. I don't want to play EVE.
You beat me to it LOL!!!

And only an officer can fly it,
That's the kind of TRIBBLE that Perpetual wanted. We all know how that turned out.
housing like in SWG....er ..no
that was easy
Yeh but you cant go inside and explore first person the station

Could even sneak in a dp if player housing was part of your ship.
To much damage, your 10-forward is half exposed to space, and your bridge is full of wires and falling beams in the way. LOL
Although a bit of power/capability drain would also be nice for pve dp at least.
That's not player housing...LOL
