This guide is written to explain basic tips and tricks for getting going in Star Trek Online.

You can gain more energy credits when selling items to NPC's at Star Docks, then using the Replicator or NPC Traders in Sector Space, ecspecially Ferrengi NPC traders. The replicator is handy when you are overloaded in deep space.
Tier TWO ships (Lieutenant Commander) have only ONE "Lieutentant Console". This means that only ONE of your Bridge Officers will be able to use his LT skills on your tier 2 ship. The rest of your Bridge Officers will only be able to use thier ensign, tier 1, skills on tier 2 ships. Remember each class and rank of ship has a specific set of consoles (officer assignment slots) you have to work with. The higher the rank vessal/class the better the consoles (BO assignment slots)
Admiral Quinn gives nice rewards and decent BLUE rewards. Sulu gives them also. Both of these npc's will give you nice rewards for blue items early on in the game. Focusing on Admiral Quinn's missions, since he is the highest ranking officer at SOL/Earth Star Dock, will get you geared up sooner.
Remember to give gear and weapons to your Bridge Officers and keep them geared up! Giving them devices and food is also advisable. Certain items will be consumed on use by the Bridge Officers, ecspecially Hypos. But shield and weapon buffs, the Bridge Officers will save for combat and not auto consume them:)
Plasma Weapons do damage overtime
Photon Torpedos are in your face straight up dps, no frills
Quantum Torpedos are best used with High Yield. They are sub-par against shields.
Plasma Torpedos hit the hardest when adding High Yield, but move very slow when High Yield is active, and are best used at close range, since they can be targeted and shot down.
When entering FLEET ACTIONS and joining "pick-up groups" (PUG), it is best to check loot options and make sure the group leader has not set looting to MASTER LOOT. You will not get any good loot and are probably aiding a goldfarmer. Ecspecially in Lower Tiers this is more common. Hit your "O" key to check looting options when joining unknown groups in any situation in STO.
When buying a new Bridge Officer you can choose a "ALIEN" officer and then you will have complete ability to make the character look as you see fit. If you choose a specific race you will not be able to 100% change the characters looks. In simplicity a klingon will look like a klingon, your alien can look like anything.
Do not be eager to spend points on your bridge officers until you have shopped around and understand the nature of the different types and rarities of Bridge Officers. Your the captain, you can promote and train them at ANYTIME. Do not rush to train Bridge Officers when your not sure how, what, who and why you are training them! Many players spend thier points and wish they had saved some, or all, when better bridge officers become available. Example: Around Lieutenant Commander 4, Admiral Quinn gave me a BLUE Bridge Officer as a Mission reward. You can also trade Bridge Officers !
Once you leave Sirius Sector and Regulus Sector BLOCKS, the harsh "system chat" will fade quickly, from rabble rabble to gold farmer spam. Get your missions done and move out of newbie space. It only takes a casual day or two of playing to actually get into tier 2 / lieutenant commander ships and skills.
You can send mail attachments from the Federation Bank Mailboxs at Stardocks ONLY. Your mail on your mini-map menu will NOT send any attachments.
Tribbles will multiply, when left for a period of time with food, in inventory or your bank. You can actually breed rare tribbles using certain types of food.
Between the MAP (M key) and the Mission/Episodes tab in your mission logs, I was able to find everything including Sulu, Memory Alpha and the U.S.S. Kirk. These three things seem to elude the players who do not read thier episode briefings and/or cannot understand how to use the map. I was able to determine with these two tools where everything is. STUDY THE MAP and READ YOUR MISSIONS and you will find the game allot less confusing early on.
I just thought this info might help newer players cope a bit better
Nice starter guide. I actually bred a tribble that gives me a 60 minute damage buff but since I didn't realize what was going on, I don't have the formula to recreate it. At least we know it's possible heh heh. Also, I have no idea how much of a buff I'm getting from using the tribble. It's tan with dark brown spots, click your tribbles and select info to see if you have a rare one that gives any sort of buff.
