A New Hope?

Star Wars: The Old Republic is coming. If Bioware's single player games are any indication, it will have ten times the depth of the current version of STO. Bethesda is making an Elder Scrolls MMO. CCO (EVE Online developer) is making a World of Darkness MMO. Even Funcom's Secret World is tantalizing. I'm sure Blizzard isn't going to stand on the sidelines while all this is happening either if the rumors are true about a new sci-fi themed MMO from them. With this in mind, Cryptic is looking more and more like the underdog.

I love the Star Trek Universe and wish this game was what it could be. Sadly, I don't think the IP alone is going to be enough to save it. There are a lot of great suggestions on these forums to make this game worthy of the title, Star Trek Online. Here's hoping they listen to you and that whatever they do, they do it fast. I'm pulling for you Cryptic.

I make my stand with the underdog.

And I ask this simple question; Do you have any concrete proof any of these foretold 'new hopes' will be any good? or somehow better than STO?

Star Wars Galaxies has been going on for over six years. It should have died a long time ago.

    Star Trek Online will last.

I don't know if they will be better. I do know that Cryptic had two years, most of those other guys are getting 4-5 years development time for their games.

I won't speak for any of the other games but as far as The Old Republic, I would be extremely surprised if that game isn't everything we are all hoping it is and more. Bioware's track record is unmatched when it comes to RPGs. Will that translate into success in the MMO world? Only time will tell but I would be more than willing to put my money where my mouth is from what I've already seen of the game and bank on it being fantastic at launch and only getting better, as a real MMO should.

I tried to give Cryptic the benefit of the doubt after Champions and was hoping that game sucked because they were putting all their marbles into STO but it looks like I was wrong.

My only hope is that STO keeps me entertained long enough for TOR to be released. So far I'm not optimistic judging by the almost laughable amount of content that is currently in STO.

But they're not here yet. Exciting stuff really. And you listed some new things on the horizon. Pretty good post.

We'll have to wait and see how STO is doing by then. I wouldnt count it out of the running yet. Its just getting started. Very cool stuff on the horizon though.

I'll play what I have now and enjoy it. I hope I can continue to do that.

What proof do you have about The Secret World? There's only one trailer that I know of, and it doesn't show anything but empty streets in a port town.

Lol, I played SWG back at launch and quit after the implementation of the NGE. A few years later while bored and not having any current games that interested me I decided to try SWG again to see if I could tolerate it. I returned to my old server and started a completely new character.

After 2 weeks of playing I never saw ONE person in Theed. (which was a major hub) Not a ONE!!!

Anyway, when folks talk about how SWG has survived I really wonder what they mean... It is up and running yes, but it has not survived, it has died...

Last I heard it was in beta.

I didn't say these titles would be better than STO. How could I know that? I'm just throwing it out there. The point is there will be a lot of competition.

i predict that SW:TOR will be for Bioware what Episode I was for George Lucas

    They too use heavy instancing
    There is no space combat
There will be not enough content
The hardcores will be dissapointed and finish it under 2 weeks
The forums will contain many whiners
There will be many many bugs
There will be lag, rubberbanding and serverdowns
The expectations and the hype cannot be fulfilled

Will it be a good game ? Sure...but the more you hype it, the more you'll get dissapionted.....
Its always the same...AoC, Aion, War.....MMO's will never ever please everyone.

Meh, Bria wasn't bad when I left. But there was a server merge recently to get rid of the ghost towns.

Yup, and not to mention that Failcom doesn't exactly have a good record when it comes to MMO's....I mean Anarchy Online and Age of Conan, yeah they really succeeded there.

I think there is hope based on the principle of the companies track record. Every studio has things they specialize in. The hope hes come to the conclusion is Bioware has made a few phenomenal titles, the main driving force in the success is the amazing story arcs. But on the flip side Biowares gameplay I have felt to be sub-par :/ Nonetheless I pray SW:TOR will rock tho.

Blizzard started working on their next mmo a few years back, i remember seeing their recruitment stuff for it. It will be an entirely new franchise for them. As for Secret World, after play Age of Conan and being thoroughly dissappointed I came to the conclussion that Age of Conan was going to be their stepping stone into that game and was mainly just their way of getting more funds for it. That said I wont be trying anything else that failcom (yes, I went there) again.

Besides I quite like this game, it has a definate pick up and play feel that you can just log in do a couple missions log out and still know whats going on next time you log in :D

Age of Conan had a terrible start and promised way more than they could offer but it's actually a pretty good game now. There's an expansion coming out soon, Rise of the Godslayer.

What interests me most about Secret World is Ragnar T

How many multi-player games has Bioware made?

Have you seen the in-game footage of TOR? It looks like KOTOR with co-op, which would be AWESOME except you're paying $15/month to play a co-op game (from what it looks like). Their ground combat system looks like TRIBBLE, but they have a lot of time to fix it.

TOR is also using Voiced over dialogue to drive the entire game, which means the game will be on rails, and that the group leader will basically decide just about everything (with the exception of allowing other members to respond sometimes I think the leader still makes the final call on which rail/dialogue tree they jump through).

I love Bioware, and I'm interested to see what they come up with, but so far what I've seen from them doesn't impress me. I'd rather just play another KOTOR game instead of KOTOR-Co-op with a fee. We'll see. I just don't think their single player mastery will transfer to the MMO scene very well.

I'll probably try every other scifi MMO. Cryptic has an advantage though, Startrek is my favourite IP. Of course, if the game is still 99% dumb pewpew and a decent PVE oriented scifi MMOs with more depth appears, I'll change games. Until then, I stick with Cryptic. They have all the time they need to improve STO.

I don't really think you are taking STO's development model into account when you compare it to these future games. Most of the ones listed are working on the 4+ year development cycle which is expensive and locks in a lot of game play features. STO has brought in a very playable base game infrastructure in two years with a enough content to make the game fun and a development plan that should allow them to tailor the game to the wishes of their player base. By the time STO reaches that four year mark, with 2 years of in-house development and 2 years of community driven development, it could be an intensely popular game because of its ability to focus on what its players want.

Last I heard, swtor was still over a year away from launch. When they launch it will be with their development teams best guess of what potential subscribers would want. Unless they guess extremely accurately they may have a hard time competing with Cryptic's highly targeted MMO. We just won't know until it is released. Then it should be fun to compare.
