I was exploring the Hromi sector and did a mission where I beamed down to an abandoned laboratory and examined computer logs to see what happened to the crew. That was SOOOOO STAR TREK. The graphics were awesome and the architecture inside was great to look at. It was fun just walking around, wondering what all this was. That is SO WHAT Star Trek is about. I realize you have to please the MMO crowd, but don't let missions like this slip away. LOVED IT.

The first time I did that mission it was the Romulans, though I wasn't sure why the base looked like a Federation outpost. Tonight, after doing that same mission with another species for the forth time I'm not so impressed.
Agreed, if viewed on the surface, this game has great Star Trek elements, but when you realize that those exact same elements and ONLY those elements are given to you repeatedly, it seems a bit lacking in Trek feel.
Granted, its early in the game's life, so here's hoping we'll see more STAR TREK added to the game as we go.
if you know the series, there is plenty of eyecandy in this game, that let's you remind of an episode.
i think actually you must be a fan of the series to really enjoy STO, like i do.
But i see this game more from a singleplayer side of view, great Star Trek feeling.
There's no making first contact(that I've seen so far, and that we were promised!), no discovering planets and naming them or being able to return to them whenever we want(we were promised this too), and there's absolutely zero diplomacy. You don't get any freedom at all to choose how you tackle a situation. I would have liked some dialogue choices and maybe having the choice of stunning enemies and disabling ships (and boarding them, capturing, arresting..etc) rather than just blowing every ship to bits. To me, there's way too much mindless destruction and killing for this to be Star Trek.
Ummm... Have you read this forum? Diplomacy is somewhat lacking at the moment. I agree about all this and like so many MMO's, I expect a few new missions once the bugs are worked out.
But seriously, can you imagine?
<ambassador> Welcome to our planet, federation.
<Player>LOL OMG seriously, this game sux!!!
<Ambassador> I do not understand your question?
<Player>This environment is TRIBBLE. I want to be able to blast Borg with absolute supremecy. Devs, are you listening. I bought a lifetime so I am the most important player here!
<Ambassador> ummm Would you like some tea?
<Player> jeez, if I wanted tea, I'd go play EVE which this game is a toatl rip-off of.
<ambassador> Umm... perhaps we will rethink our involvement in the Federation.
<player> see, this game sux. It won't let you do anything. I gtg, my mom is calling. good luck losers.
<ambassador> ummm... right... well.....
What? The three different computer consoles or the two types of boxes and then completely empty rooms, repeated over and over and over again...? Just add a new texture on it and bang, new mission.
You have obviously never seen Star Trek at all before.
I really enjoy the game but after the 57th mission where a bunch of scientists abandoned a base and we have to run room to room (optionally ground based region) checking a computer terminal (optionally scanning a rock/grave/alien artifact) optionally killing whoever is there, they get a bit meh. I much prefer the story line missions particularly later in the game.
I laughed quite a bit when I saw the first "There are some Klingon's innocently investigating an anomaly, kill them all" mission
Some of the graphics are great (others not so much). I particularly like some of the wilderness scenes although I hate any area that has a whining plant. Those noises are enough for the species to have been extinct long ago.
Yes, there are several missions that are great, and are wonderful tributes to the shows. I've found countless easter eggs about (mostly characters), as well. However, aside from flying around in a Trek-style ship, and visiting places that resemble some of the locations seen on the shows, I'd still say that this game lacks the overall Trek feel. Trek wasn't about killing everything that moves like we do in this game. The exploration in game is the same 5 mission types, on the same randomly generated settings over and over.
Does the game have potential? Absolutely. Are we really close right now? I just don't think so.
I started playing eq2 and remember when crafting took forever, we were promised guild halls it took 4 years of the 5 that i have been playing but they did put them in game (these were promised origanally at launch ). Putting too much in at one time is bad for business, yes and so is to little! they wanted a game everyone could play. All mmo's reuse maps!! take a closer look at the other games, different quests different enemies SAME map.
which star trek games have you played that are about interaction between crew members on ship.
Oh yes, Cryptic really found a way to capture the essence of Startrek. Especially in this mission in which I murdered a bunch of Romulans doctors. Oh and in the one in which I murdered a bunch of TRIBBLE in a bar. Oh and there is the exploration mission in which I had to murder a bunch of unknown aliens because I wanted to scan 5 pieces of rocks on their planet.
This, indeed, is Startrek : we come in peace, shoot to kill !
I couldn't agree more
Cryptic is trying to please Star Trek fans and MMO fans at the same time. It's quite a balancing act. The game has only been out a couple of weeks and it has already gotten better and better.
Give Cryptic a chance, this is a great game that is fun to play.
Yes and while we pay to wait for content what do we do then? After hitting admiral and there is nothing left to do but 2 dailies or play a really horrible pvp system were just supposed to pay and wait for them to give us stuff to do? Come on I have as much patience as anyone else but at the same time I recognize a failed game and an unfinished product and what you might as well call a ripoff. Releasing a game in this state is a joke and its sad that companies get away with it.
LOL this made lol all over the keyboard
says the guy with darth maul pick for SW forum
Sadly some missions were poorly written and badly set-up.
The Romulan/Undine mission needed more player bites to set-up for the betrayal at the end. Even I knew I was being duped, but had no way to express my suspicions in the mission.
The bar patrons attacked me and my crew, so I defended my self. I was not upset with the intimidation tactics that we had to use but I do agree that I should have been able to intimidate the patrons without total bloodshed. Leaving bloodshed as a last resort, of course.
I haven't done any away mission where I killed innocents just to scan a rock? I did several where I had conflict with some aliens over some strategicly important meteorites and was forced to combat to acquire them before they did. The securing of strategic areas or items is a part of war, and a rather important one at that. If the aliens in question were not affiliated with my enemy, then other option should be avialible.
Well, I'd consider Away Team and Bridge Commander to both have more interaction with your bridge officers/crew than STO does. I'd also add DS9: The Fallen to that list.
However, I'll admit that most Star Trek games lack the depth that they could provide, given the source material. However, I'll also point out that very few Star Trek games have done really well critically, and the ones that did, fit more of a niche market.
Now we have an MMO, something that is meant to represent the Star Trek Universe, its draw is much larger than niche single player games, and many of the players here were not players of the those games, but fans of the various series of Star Trek.. and as such, they expect a game that is more like Star Trek than just a fighting game with Star Trek weapons and ships.
So, your question is fairly irrelavent.. this isn't any previous Star Trek game, and its audience is far greater than any previous Star Trek game, so it can't solely base its game play on what has come before it.
I start out on some simple mission.. and by the time I amd one so much big stuff has happened that I wanna do it again! Hasn't happened in this game sadly. You know the missions in star trek that go from simple take an envoy to a location turns into like stopping 2 alien space whales from humping on your ship or something ... lol
I'm glad you liked that mission. You'll be doing it again about 50 more times with slight modifications in scenary. Enjoy.
PS. You'll be doing the "repair the satellites" mission at Rear Admiral for the 50th time too.
The sarcasm is... palpable
