Mark V....Captain only items?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I just got a Mark V Plasma Sniper Rifle (Rare) as a mission reward for the Preemptive Strike mission. I can't equip the damn thing, and I noticed it is labeled as Captain....

Is there any other equipments that goes against the standard level system or is this just a glitch?

EDIT: I am a Commander 5 so I should be able to use Mark V gear.

I've aquired several items that are out of reach, seems common if you chase quests too quickly.

I saw that as well, however, I think its a problem with the Mk being wrong. Look at its DPS, its much higher then normal Mk V weapons.

Except that when I did that quest I was still a commander and the mobs were -4 or 5 to me...

What does that have to do with an item being out of the normal parameters? The was a commander level mission and I am a commander.

Mark V and VI should work for Commander, this item doesn't. I would completely understand if I took on a Captain mission and got Captain (Mk VII and Mk VIII) stuff.

Seriously, I would really like to know why I received a Mark V item I can't use as Commander...

Heh, I just did that last night and I'm just a Lt Cmd so that's even worse, though I took the shield since the weapon description was bugged anyhow with some ?? stats

I believe its MK is wrong as it is clearly marked "Captain" and its DPS is way too high for a Commander.

Same issue here. The weapon isn't grossly overpowered for a mk V, so I'm assuming that the "Captain" flag is a bug that will need to be fixed.

yea this happened to me too on that quest, and it's listed as CMD 2 or 3 I think, which seems silly that you'd give a quest reward that is 7+ levels out of reach?

I guess its a bug. I have that weapon too, a MK V weapon marked as Captain is just wrong.

I've been able to equip a few things out of my level range. I'm a few away from Commander... Need to keep leveling up. Though yes, I was doing a lot of missions, Admiral Quinn won't even talk to me anymore .... :(

It really is a Captain item from a Lt. Commander mission, and it is indeed bugged. It is way higher level than it should be, it doesn't make sense to give away stuff you can't use for 10+ more grades at least. Besides, the special ability of it doesn't seem to work, I tried it once I hit Captain and it doesn't seem to do any damage, so the ?? might be around 0. :p

The cluelessness in this thread is remarkable.

While I was too a bit surprised to get a Mark V weapon with the "Captain" restriction, after making it to Captain and Admiral I think I understand that thing now.

The weapon is a "Overcharged" Mark V Plasma Sniper Rifle. Notice the "Overcharged". So in essence, a Mark V weapon with severely enhanced powers.
It's damage output equals that of a Mark VIII Sniper Rifle, so it is logical to restrict it to Captain rank.
The "??" on it doesn't seem to be a bug, but rather to be intentional, as a hint that (within the games universe, of course) whoever tweaked that weapon wasn't sure how much it really can dish out before it was handed to your character.

In fact, being Admiral 1 now and almost Admiral 2, I haven't been able to get a suitable replacement yet, so I'm still using this quite efficient weapon.

So, no "bugs" here, everything makes sence.

    Its a bug then.

    Mark I / II = Lt.
    Mark III / IV = Lt.Cmdr.
    Mark V / VI = Cmdr.
Mark VII / VIII = Cpt.
    Mark IX / X = Rear Admiral

So for certain items they totally break the fundamental labeling/rank system of items in the game? Interesting.

Still strange they give out Captain rewards for low level Commander missions....

Oh, and as far as the "cluelessness" comment, can you link me to an official site and/or dev post that says this is the way it is supposed to be so I know you aren't pulling this info out of your a$$?

"Cluelessness" in this case refers to the fact that everything that is slightly out of the ordinary is immediately tagged as a "bug". Granted, in most cases it IS a bug, but I seriously doubt this is the case with the "Overcharged Plasma Sniper Rifle".
As far as I can tell, this weapon is one-of-a-kind, comparable to those Mark IV impulse engines with the + power settings bonus.

With the exception that you can get it a good deal earlier than you can use it. I would however not consider this a bug than merely "odd reward placement".
Seeing that one can use this weapon all the way through Captain and some way into Admiral, I for one gladly kept it in my inventory till I was able to use it.

Another interesting fact about this weapon is, by the way, that you cant give it to any of your officers. Only your character can use it.
Again, this is a bit odd, but seems intentional to me.

Of course, if ranting an raving makes you all happy, be my guest. If you wanted a possible explanation though, I've given you one.
Don't wait for the devs to comment on this - I imagine they are pretty busy right now with way more important issues.

far as i can tell, the problem is in the description.

the item is a reward for a mission you can pick up at Lt Cmdr 9 and is a cakewalk by the time your Cmdr 1.

so either there's meant to be a Cmdr version of this weapon at Mk V with lower stats and we get the captain version because the description on that one is bugged to say Mk V, or its meant for a Cmdr and the desscription tag for Captain is wrong and why we cant equip it.

got this last night and /bugged it in game.. once CS finish dealing with the mountain of other requests and if they give me something other than a generic response i'll post if back here.. maybe clear this up some for everyone :)

I hope you will get a reply on this. I'm curious as to who of us managed to get at least close with his analysis.

And for the record, I would gladly accept hearing it officially that there's a bug with this item.

... but be prepared for a proper reaction from me if my theory should prove to be correct. :D

mislabeling is more common than it should be
disrupter beam array mk IV is labeled commander, but is really for lt cmdr (it does work for lt cmdr tho the tag is wrong)

although I'm glad it is, DBAs can be bought on the exchange for 2-5k whereas PBAs of the same type (mk IV) cost 15-20k and in the end they are both pretty much the same weapon strength

I've stopped using the item period. Why? Well, as nice as the weapon is, the ??? you see actually means that the exploit damage attack is RANDOM. Which essentially means that I fire at an exploited person and wham, he gets hit for 10 damage. I'm serious. If you want I'll play around with it later tonight and take screenshots, but I'd say after using it for a couple of days I've had it do weak damage on an expose attack more than 20 times. Like, instead of vaporizing someone I gave them a mosquito bite.
