Just thought I'd share some thoughts on why I'm leaving STO after only a week or so. This comes from a casual gamer who's played a few MMORPG's in his time and had no invested time into STO prior to purchasing. I know a week isn't a long time but I've been playing computer games long enough to recognize when I'm not going to have fun with something.
Right now it feels to me like STO is not massive in any way. Everything feels small, the ships, the starbases, the planets, missions, etc. To date I've yet to feel anything epic happening. Short of Nemoy's voice overs, which to be honest seem kind of cheesy and desperate. If your going to use voice overs, get a few actors, not just one famous one, it smacks of desperation.
I should have investigated ahead but the 1 server style game just does not appeal to me. I like unique servers that you join, where individuals and guilds become well known for good or ill, where you see the same people in game regularly. Right now I rarely speak to anyone and outside of general chat have not found anyone speaking to me in missions or pvp. For a MMORPG STO feels surprisingly empty and lonely. This game seems like a singleplayer game with multiplayer aspects like Diablo.
I just made a Klingon and from what I've seen and read there is no PvE content for the Klingons beyond a few missions. To me this makes no sense, how can you have two factions in game and only 1 of them are fleshed out PvE wise? That means HALF of your game is unfinished or never intended to have PvE missions.
The lack of documentation and explanation both in game and out floored me. The skill tree makes little sense, yet I have to invest points to level up. Yet there is no ingame way to reset the points. So either the points don't mean much or they do but you can't fix your tree the way you want because lack of documentation. Respecs coming I hear but with today's MMORPGs standards these issues seem huge.
I should have checked, but lack of a world PvP is a turn off for me. Queing is fine but I thrive when danger is afoot while doing PvE missions.
Ground combat and missions are boring frankly. The one mission I really loved was at the start, where you had to talk to miners then answer questions at the end. It actually felt like Star Trek for a second. Ever since I've been mindless killing every living thing. I would have loved more story based/detective missions.
The "crafting" system at Alpha Memory is horrible. No explanation of what is going on, no notification of progress to get to T2, no notification that you should speak to someone else, etc.
Ground based fleet encounter are painful. When I respawned I wanted to go back to a big group of folks clearing the outer outer ring but I could NOT find them on my map. Seems there is a very limited range for showing other players making finding them pointlessly frustrating.
Speaking of pointless frustrating, no autofire on all weapons? Please. I glitched out my game within 2 days to get 2 front cannons autofiring. I'm not spamming my spacebar every 2 seconds, it's pointless and painful. Hotkey special abilities? Sure. Space bar to fire on new targets or ones coming into firing arc? Of course. Separate beam/torpedo buttons? Love it. Spamming space bar to fire basic weapons on top of all that? HAHA. No thank you, bad design choice. Not to mention lack of basic autofire in ground combat, another really bad design choice.
I guess to sum up, the game feels small, unfinished and outside of graphics seems very little like Star Trek. I know some people enjoy it, like any game it's not going to appeal to everyone. I just wanted to share my thoughts as I uninstall.
Well, game is gone and I bid farewell. Hopefully Cryptic will address the issues players have and good luck to those who enjoy it. Sadly I didn't even think of giving away the 100k credits I'd gotten, so sorry, I would have given you my stuff before I left!

I agree with this. Nothing really epic feeling about it. Even the war feels shallow and forced...give it time though I have a feeling that they can have some amazing story twists over the next year. The question is what way they take the story.

I agree with this. I understand their concept for sharding (not sharting) they didn't want to have 1,000 ships all huddles around one station but I agree it doesn't feel massive at all. I think this is more chat related than anything else as every few minutes you change zones or instances within a mission or pvp so there is no way to feel 'connected'. Cryptic if you are listening you need to look into a way of making your player base feel more connected as a lot of people have said this exact thing.

100% hands down agree with you. More description are needed so that people don't have to read forums for hours just to figure out how their skills and equipment actually work. 1 possible solution is to remove the flat base number increase of the gear (+15 to emitters) and change it to (+1% Damage to all Emitter abilities)
I should have checked, but lack of a world PvP is a turn off for me. Queing is fine but I thrive when danger is afoot while doing PvE missions.
I want open PVP too. Something tells me we will see it eventually but in what form and how long is the real question. Right now they are focused on balance above all else and in a controlled instanced environment it is much easier to see the effects of your tweaks and changes as opposed to a 20 v 3 anti-Klingon zergfest.

As you climb out of LT and LC the missions get better but overall they all feel very similar. Once you get going with the story arcs they can be somewhat entertaining but the GAMEPLAY is what is so boring. Personally Cryptic ground combat is boring to the point where I try to avoid all mission that have it. The skills are boring, weapons are boring there is no excitement or tactical feeling. MY advice if you want ground combat to be fun and engaging go FPS with it (FLAME ON). Think of the possibility of having a AAA first rate Star Trek FPS and Tactical Space Sim and MMO all in one.
The "crafting" system at Alpha Memory is horrible. No explanation of what is going on, no notification of progress to get to T2, no notification that you should speak to someone else, etc.
Memory alpha is a waste of your time money and patience and if we had warp fuel it would be a waste of that too. I would be happier if it was gone altogether so i wouldn't feel guilted into picking up the pretty little sensor thingies.

Of all the times in game when you have auto grouping why they dont in fleet actions of all things is beyond me. But yes it is hard to find your teammates at times.

No auto fire in ground isn't bad (Your BO's auto fire) I just have fire beams hot keyed to one mouse button and fire torps on the other...my wife gives me strange looks though when I PVP cause its Click ClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClick pause for 10 seconds. ClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClick followed closely by a Booyah *****es.

Well sad to see you go. You have raised some valid concerns that Cryptic should look at. At the very least you wont get a don't let the door hit you on the way out from me, just a thanks for playing and keep an eye on us...some (myself) will keep fighting the good fight a bit longer...we believe in the project, we believe in the goal...question is if Cryptic is the one to deliver it.
You could always send the 100k to me that way i can by some shiny new lazorz!
This right here leads me to believe that this must be a joke posting. No one could seriously love that mission.
I actually completed that mission without even reading the text. I just went to each NPC, got the quest update and then answered the questions at the end. Of course the miners aren't happy, of course they want more time off, etc.

Lepton,
I actually did. It felt like there would be missions where your memory of NPC conversations would be how you resolved or won the mission. It also felt very much like Star Trek, diplomacy and peacekeeping. Heck even if some of these type of missions ended or started in combat that would have been fine.
Sadly this type of mission NEVER appeared again and that was a big mistake I think.

But yeah, see you guys in SWTOR.
See I would have loved more mystery/conversation missions.

There is a mission at Commander I think where you have to solve a trade dispute that is similar, but those are the only two that I remember that actually seemed like what a Star Trek captain would do (I'm an Admiral).

I liked it. It was different from blowing stuff up and it made me think a moment. I know, I know... thinking is a bad thing that most people do not enjoy; right? Ba-hum-bug!
Good review, these are pretty much all the reasons I can't even bring myself to using up the remaining time on my account.
See you in SWTOR
You keep saying that, and yet you've been saying it for several days now on these forums. If you're going to leave, why not just leave rather than hanging around trolling?
It might seem like a wise idea now, but honestly, what MMO doesn't have bugs. All games have bugs, some more than others, but I honestly think that Cryptic is going to try to fix them. Why do i think they are? Because they aren't going to release a game like this and not do anything about the problems. They will fix them. As for the quality of missions, I have had no problems/complaints with the way missions are done. I guess you have to be a True Trekkie to appreciate what Cryptic has done here.
I didn't know you were still around...I thought you went the way of flatfingers (may he live long and prosper)
Yep, I'm still around ... the game was pre-ordered for me (my Sister) as an Xmas gift ... I'm playing it and I'm having fun. Its not going to be a long term thing if Cryptic doesn't up its game in the next couple of months, but when I do play, I have fun.
I'm just not consumed by the game like I have been other games ... I don't find myself thinking about it during the day, I'm not constantly considering what I need to do next, what gear I need to earn next, or browsing sites to learn "inside" information that might get me an edge.
Its just an "OK" game, that is still new ... so fun. When the newness wears off, we'll see how fun it is. I'm already getting weary of the incessant space combat that all looks the same ... the only difference from level to level is how many ships they send at you.

It isn't bugs that most people are leaving for it is a fundamental concept of the game, one that is large enough in their eyes to warrant leaving. It would be like me saying I really can't get over the fact that I can't design my ship from the ground up...obviously cryptic can't and wont fix that so I'm left with a choice of taking my ball and playing elsewhere or sticking it out for the things I do enjoy...
BTW I don't want to design my ship from scratch it was just a metaphor. But I do want better ground combat...it sucks and you know it Cryptic. Give us free aim and FP view and dark scary ships and I will be happy.

Your experience so far is a lot like mine. I am trying to purposefully take my time with it (which is something I never do with a new game as my wife can attest to) I got to Tier 3 in Beta but right now I'm at a relaxed LC 4 and only play an hour or so a day. I can see though if I played like I did with other games at launch I might be upset or frustrated and quit.
But for now, I'm taking my time, just moving along...you'll forget about me after I've been gone.
I'm starting to think all these "I hate STO" screeds on the forums are all coming from a single guy sitting in a dingy basement in Des Moines full of Jar Jar Binks memorabilia.

See the comment 'true trekkie' bothers me. What about being a true trekkie would make you appreciate the game as it is now? I've seen the movies, watched most the T.V. shows, read some ST books, etc. What about the game feels like Star Trek? If you changed the art and models, what gameplay mechanic makes this seem like Star Trek? Is it just the visuals? Right now nothing feels like the movies or T.V. shows. I find no awe inspiring moments, no moral decisions I have to make in missions, no upkeep of Federation law, no factions to join like SF intelligence, Medical University, Criminal Networks, etc.
It seems like an unconnected space game using visual design from the Star Trek universe, nothing more.
Agree with almost every single point you make, I have no reasonable argument... You're right and those things are a deal-breaker for a lot of people (I'm not happy with them either) .. So you're likely making the right choice...
I hope they are listening to the reasonable feedback and address this stuff, luring you back into the fold eventually...Mostly because I want those credits ....
I didnt read much about this game before I got it, but it was startrek and an mmo that was enough for me I never had high expectations really, but im finding it to be a good game, I really enjoy the missions and the space combat is fun. I have been taking my time since headstart, I am currently Commander 1 with my new Heavy escort Today i spent most of my time playing the exchange and making energy credits so I can get full Mk VI Blues for my new ship.
I have always hated crafting in mmos and I find the handing in data samples at memory alpha to be much better than any boring crafting. Currently working on getitng to tier 3 on all 3 npcs. Dont see myself playing for a really long time, that depends on whats added, still a long way to get admiral 5 so im happy untill then.
I have seen every episode of all the treks multiple times, and that increases my enjoyment by a factor of warp 9.9, just reading the missions and understanding whats going on because I have seen all the shows and how everything links together is great, the little details I dont miss
Even if i only get a few months of fun from the game thats fine by me. Its something to do while I wait for jumpgate evolution and Final Fantasy 14.

Asking a troll why he is still trolling is kind of an oxymoron dontchathink? Anyhoo, I'm still here to see what if anything they change in this 30 days and if it resembles anything close to a finished product

Seriously, the game isn't perfect, but come ON.
Planet,
I don't hate the game by anymeans. Honestly it evokes a 'meh' vibe. Certainly some people are enjoying it, I just wanted to share my thoughts about why I, as a casual mmorpg gamer, am leaving so early. I think part of the reason some people are bothered is because this game is using the Star Trek universe. That means alot to many fans and something to me as a casual fan.
Honestly, I'm more underwhelmed by the game BECAUSE it is a official Star Trek online game. I don't think the Star Trek universe is being done justice by the game. I think the reverse is true, the game is relying on the Star Trek universe to prop up a, in my opinion, poorly designed and rushed game.
In the meantime, I'm (apparently one of the few) having plenty fun with ST:O.
I can understand someone not liking the game, or any game, and choosing not to play, but what I can never figure out are proclamations of abandonment due to being unsatisfied.
It's almost as if people think the games they choose not to play, are girlfriends they have to convince why it's a good idea to break up.

I agree with this up to the point. If the person leaving simply CAPS out and starts ranting all over his keyboard, that's just a cry for attention, as far as I can see. My favorite is still when they talk about suing Cryptic/Atari.
But, if they are actually giving examples on what it is that they don't like, describing valid points in a resonable manner and maybe even offering some ideas, I don't think people should be jumping all over someone when they do that. Not that I'm saying you're jumping all over him...
I admit. I tend to sometimes close the game and walk away for a few hours until I feel like trying again. But in the back of my mind I'm pretty comfortable believing this is gonna get better. For those who can't just put it away and come back to it later, maybe you should take a couple months off and check back in june or july? It could have some of the major issues worked out by then maybe. At least pay attention to the boards to see if it's better. I've done my fair share of complaining but I do see potential.

Memory Alpha is horrible. Plain and simple.
Documentation is seriously lacking for the skill system. I can only imagine how befuddled someone new to MMOs would be by it.
The omni-server pretty much eliminates any feeling of community.
Hopefully devs will take some of this to heart. I really want this game to rock. Right now it's just okay.
As for the "one server" design .... all I can say is, "I told you so!!!!!!"
