dunno what it is, but the screen goes black, sound loops and there's a staticy like band at the top .25 of the screen. this seems to happen mainly in landing party missions. happend 3 times now on Starbase24, and a few time last night tho they were space based. i don't think it's an overheating issue as it's fairly cool here. i have sensor porbes on both 3870s and the temps they show havn't gone above 41c and mainly stay around 38. anyone else going thru something similar?. never had to do this with any other game, so i don't know it it'f my rig, or something in STO that's causing it, and i'm sure we all know that some games can play havoc with certain configurations.

What about power consumption, can your power supply handle the power drain from your graphic card...

the power pack is a 950w. not sure i wanna goto that extreme, baking my cards. i'ld say there's a risk of melting some plastic bits, like pwr comnnectors.

It could be the power. If you have the software check to see how stable your voltage while playing the game. Those temps arnt bad. I don’t know much about the whole 60 fps thing that sounds more like a lot of people don’t clean out their puters I’ve never played a game doesn’t try and run at the fastest frame rate it can that’s the point to the whole 3d video card thing.

Oh wait no it should be that’s a lot of power. The probes your getting your temps from are they the internal ones or the kind you sandwich between stuff?

For me, when it was crashing i went form a 450w to 600w power supply because my card was asking to much. The only thing is that after i had the new supply, my card did overheat. then more cashing,,,

Yeah,...there is a bug that will heat some video cards.

    Quoted from another forum.....
"If you havent manually set your FPS with /maxfps command; then you are redlining your card without even knowing it. Apparently STO has a huge bug where it sets your GPU to try and attempt an infinite framerate which bottoms it out. Even if you arent running hot you are still doing damage since its redlined. To fix this serious problem log into the game and type /maxfps if it comes up 0.000000 then you have been running redline for days most likely. Just type /maxfps(space)# between 30-60 for fps. Then type just /maxfps to make sure it took.

The /showfps command may still show zero but thats bugged so dont pay attention to it. After you set your maxfps you should notice markably increased performance, less heat if you were running crazy hot like me, and the ability to set more stuff to max if you were unable to before.

LAST TIP VERY IMPORTANT. Dont forget that every time you log in you must set your fps again or it will go back to 0.00000.".

    I ment that bit :D

The other thing is if your sounds looping it could be something’s other than your video cards causing a problem and the weird video is just a symptom of it. Are you running the recommend drivers for sto. I haven’t checked sto but I know with champions it’s not the newest Nvidia ones. I’d not be surprised if that does hold true with sto also.

Bigger psu’s do make more heat. But again his temps if right are not bad.

Have you vacuumed out the air intakes in your rig? I killed a card just by not cleaning the combination dust and cat hair out of the fan intakes on the card.

    Sad day.

Also try turning the setting down to the lowest and then turn them up bit by bit.

the probes are wedged between the cooler, each has a zalman VF1000, but not so as to keep the cooler base from making full contact. been using them for a year or so w/out any probs. idle temps, like now, are 29.5c.
got a little USB PC vacuum and dusted the filters....just now, but i doubt that was the cause as there wasn't enuff to impede airflow.

I’m guessing those temps are about right then even if their like 8-10c off you should be fine a lot of people run those card at like 70c if not higher under load. Have you checked event view to see if anything shows up there?

Found this also seems you’re not alone with ground combat problems. Sounds like it could be a driver issue. Is ant aliasing still not an option for ati users if its working now try turning it off that was a big thing in champions.

EV show 3 errors in application, one for tonight ,the ther 2 for yesterday and the day before but they're not related it seems. something to do with wlcomm.exe. i was overclocking, but noew restored to defaults. gonna see if that caused having to restart. i've got AA checked in options. not sure if it actually works cuz there's still a bit of jagginess. drivers are the last out ATi put out.

When was the last time you stress tested your rig?

This may sound goofy, but did you get your STO from Steam?

I was having the same issue with my graphics at big battles until I started launching STO from the actual STO launcher instead of through Steam. I think steam is running in the background causing some weird issues. Go to your Steam directory and try to launch STO from it's directory instead of the icon that launches STO through Steam...or after you launch STO with Steam, while you're at the STO login , go to your app tray and turn Steam off (right click the Steam icon in the tray and select Exit).

I've not had this black screen crash since I started doing this. I sent a bug report on it but I haven't seen any response.

haha yeah well there are things a stress test will test against that most games don't. It's not just 3D calculations that test whether a card is working or not. But if you ran a stress test, even multiple tests, you could confirm that it is not your hardware. Assuming that it is in fact another issue. But I should be more realistic, hardware problems are a lot like girl problems, you think you know 100% what the issue is, then the next second via a stress test, you are confirmed wrong!

likely won't be able to stress it tonight. gotta goto work in a coupla hrs, so i doubt there'll be enuff time. so far, at default clocks it happened, then lowering lights to 4 same again. gonna find that cmd to set FPS and see if it helps. if not, i'll drop 24 until a fix is out, if ever.

I know aa was shut off during ob for ati card because of problems it might still be if you’re seeing jaggies, either way you might try and turn it off the toggle. The stress test should illuminate any other system problems that could be causing it. If that doesn’t shows anything you might check the forum to see if there’s any info on the forum about older ati drives you can try.

well, setting maxfps to 60 did nothing to help, so 24'll have to be dropped for now.

/maxfps 60, or whatever number you want. I usually use 60 since my frame rate is locked to my monitors refresh due to vsync. But I haven't had an issue like yours, I am running an HD4870 which is similar to your card. Have you tried running other games?

Sorry i skipped the other replies but OP are you using ATI video card?

If yes, switch off the post processing and you will never crash and get game lock outs again.

well, turned off post processing and couldn't find SB24. went instead to Korvat on a mission and the same thing happened there, black screen, looping sound and staticy along the top of screen. dunno what else there is to do.
