Ok this is going to be a long post folks so the TL;DR is this: variety, side missions, immersion and a unique story for each person or as close as!

Ok Cryptic devs I sincerely hope you read this! I am your worst nightmare and your best friend, i'm a customer that knows what he wants in a Star Trek game. When you picked up the dev rights to this game you accepted the challenge to satisfy us the customer good luck you'll need it Star Trek fans can be very die hard when it comes to our universe and our canon! Now in saying that I want to quickly say thank you for making a good Trek game the best one imo since A Final Unity back int day lad! <3

Ok now here is the scope in my eyes; I played CoX for a while but it got boring why? Cause all you can do is mission mission mission thats it really. And every player had the exact same story of how they either saved the day or claimed a certain recluse's head.. Stop right there, if you're going to give us the same in STO this game has a very limited life. Sure I can re-roll a toon and do the exact same thing I did before again and again but how long till that gets boring? 1 toon 2 toons? Ok so you release a new playable race w00t! one thing I dont want to do the exact same thing over and over just with a different skin and then share my exact same experience with everyone else pretty pointless and a waste of an mmo imo.

How to tackle this? Simple why not have like side quests that pop up along the way? Starfleet hails me and says oh go check out this system for certain activity. A dynamic mission with its own mini story. And when I play this I don't think we should get anything but very basic sp rewards instead there should be some overall item reward for successful completion.

Another thing at the moment when we do a mission we have one option win thats it. I want some serious consequences! I want to be able to lose and that have an impact on my story! I want something different I want my own STO experience and so does everyone else. 6 months time when we're all Admirals we'll all have the EXACT same story to tell how can we all save the universe in exactly the same way and still feel special? where is the dynamic of this game if the only option in a mission is to win it?

As it stands right now we're all on a single straight road to admiral its all the same for all of us...whats the point?! It's a great game but with it being so static its going to last what 2 months at most for each playable race which means a loss of customers a low influx of new customers. You want to keep customers and bring in new ones give us dynamic content.

I can be warping through sector space and have Starfleet hail me with random dynamic encounter missions with their own storyline that I can win OR lose and cause its a side mission it wont affect the main storyline just give me something to do so I don't rush to the next mission. That's what we do Cryptic you've given us a great game with good stuff that we all want but to get it we mission like badgers to get it as fast as possible! Or some of us anyway. Let's drag our levels on give us these side quests. Hell where is my 5 year mission?! Set it up like this a hail from starfleet they want me to go on a 5 year mission say. I can take my fleet or team but its a whole mini arc in the game with unique rewards.

I want to "Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before" right now all we're all doing is the exact same thing hardly living up to one of Star Trek's classic ethos. Can you devs say anything like this will be coming at any point? Cause if not and all we get is a new playable race with its own storyline that doesnt change then i'm afraid this game will fester and die leaving only a shadow of subscribers that we have now. I want my own unique STO life I want Joe Blogs to have his own story I want variation in this game not oh remember that mish oh and that mish? I want to be able to lose a mission and the story to take me somewhere with that in mind I want a consequence to my actions I want to live in an online universe when i log in as it stands right now this is just a big online co-op game that has no need for a persistant universe.

Imagine going to new clients using STO as an example. Would you rather present them with a game thats stale with essentially one good story, or would you rather show them a dynamic universe that fully utilised your writing staff's talents with sub quests sidelines 5 year mission into the unknown? Everyone has told you this game has potential dont squander it and just think content = more missions against generic aliens. We want a LIVE universe where our actions have an impact in our game. Please Cryptic tell me you intend to do this cause if this goes the same way as CoV then you will be dealing with a mass exodus soon.

Sorry for the massive wall of text, but I had to say this, any input from the community or especially the devs would be great. :D

p.s. after typing that I couldnt be bothered to spellcheck needless to say Opera is showing me a lot of red lines so apologies about spelling/grammar errors

ah yeah also nearly forgot to put in an example of something I would like to see.

An episode of TNG had a young child in sickbay who needed to get to a starbase for medical reasons (the episode name escapes me but his brother played a prank on him that backfire if memory serves) and in true Star Trek fashion something distracted the Enterprise, eating away the precious time the child had to live. Now why not have this happen? I've been told a crew or passenger (though few Starfleet ships actually have families aboard I know, Galaxy class i think was the first to do this i believe) is sick and we need to get to a starbase in 2 hours or he dies, but en route I get hailed by a planet that needs my help with something be it an aid mission a ground incursion w/e. This of course delays me will I be able to help the child in time? Will I choose not to help him or will I choose not to help the planet? Can I find a way to do both or is this no win situation that Starfleet captains can face? What are the consequences of either action?

Oh and while i'm here if/when you implement a full ship map, why not have a mission or 2 based inside my own ship? For example TNG episode "Disaster" I have a disabled ship in space lifesupport on aux. Do I go to engineering to get main power online first or do I go to the bridge and assess the situation first? How do i get main power back online? Well im telling you now it isnt just running from one console to the other I want to be able to feel like im actually fixing it, some kind of mini game perhaps?

Anyway i'll be quiet for now I hope my idea's go down well with devs and the community.

totally agree on this point but will also add that the kits need to be reconsidered, I find it fairly pointless to even have kits as an engineer because if i want to put up shields i can just wear that kit, then swap to turrets after.
I would much rather have the option to select which powers to use on my kit, i wouldn't even mind making a basic class choice like support engineer/combat engineer/turrets engineer at the beginning and be forced to stick with my options until a respec point. This may give birth to variations of engineers seen on ground missions rather than all engineers basically having the ability to mimic other engineers simply by wearing a different kit.

space combat is still great so leave that alone, just concentrate on ground missions and redefine your idea of what "exploration" actually means.
I'm pretty sure chris columbus didn't land on American shores and just press F to colonize it.

a great idea! How about implementing a custom kit crafting system? This can lead to another choice; do i want to specialise in turrets or do I want to spread myself out and be more general but less effective.

I think somewhere it's been said by Cryptic they are looking at exploration but you are right at the end of it all we're running up to something and just pressing f. Not exactly taxing or rewarding. And also why as a tactical officer do I find it just as easy to repair a computer station as an engineer does? I kill things I don't mess around with Isolinear chips or bio-neural gel packs.

There is alot of things that could be done to open the game up, free world roaming IE open up earth an vulcan and ratoIII etc etc let ppl roam freely why not open up some of those deep space areas give us planets to settle on put down houses to store TRIBBLE in, setup planetside bases or star bases for fleets out in these deep space areas toss some highend content enemies out there to make it a challenge give us some places to explore not forcefully dirceted to this small back to can the same TRIBBLE over an over with the same 10 to 12 missions in them.

    I'm with you!

And, I think the Devs DO read these boards..they may just choose which posts to directly answer. But your complaint is not a new one and something similar to it always seems to be floating around somewhere on the first couple of pages of the forum. So, while it may not be YOUR EXACT post that gets their attention, I think it is the abundance of such posts that ultimately will get the game moving in this direction.

By the way, nice school you've got out there in your neighborhood! ;)

Indeed, there are about a million things that could be better. Especially considering the richness of the IP.

    w00t replies!

I'm glad to see some positive replies to this.

The idea of free world roaming is excellent! The first though that came to mind was something like Oblivion. Each planet has either a large or several small or a mix of communities in it with smaller problems we can choose to help out with or not. I like the idea of being able to buy an off duty leisure house in Risa, or purchase a small town house in Vulcan where I can peruse a library and learn more about these people! Although I think i'm stretching it a bit far there to be honest, but the idea of living among a town of other players and themed NPC's in a dynamic environment gets me very excited!

Yes the devs do read some posts I just hope they catch this one at least and take even a minor bit of inspiration from my ideas, and/or anyone else who has posted in a similar vein. Oh btw i'm not complaining (at least I hope it doesnt come across that way) I'm just worried a game that I do enjoy and feel passionate about will become boring and die way before it's time xD

Side note I didn't go to Brooke's Uni in Oxford I went to the Oxpens El Cheapo college ;P

Ok bumping an older thread of mine (cause I would like to see some more discussion on any idea's being chucked around in it) and also to add in another idea I had!

An idea on how to have a more Open World (to those that are using the term sandbox in the general sense this is what I have seen as a solution possibly)

I have to say first off i'm part of the open world lot, people who wanted or expected STO to be a sandbox in the same vane as EvE i.e. here's the universe go do stuff.

We didn't get that obv. but as a compromise, could Cryptic introduce area's where this applies? If I go to a deep space border why not just throw me into deep space with a randomly generated arc or even a randomly generated sector where there is a story but I have to actually explore to uncover it? It's not quite a totally open world but it is a subtle mix of each and could in theory be implemented into the game seamlessly (coding/progamming aside) I suppose the short version is make Deep Space a place we can go with a unique experience to those that choose to go there.

I am not going to go on about the could be's and should be's in deep space, more fun to let the community throw ideas out i think.

oh and also I still like the idea of crafting my own kit! I dont want a close combat kit with a stun grenade I want one with stealth so I can sneak in, and do a surprise attack for instance...yes a shameless bump for custom creating kits was thrown in there too! :D

the DvD will feature me and Dita Von Teese....i'm planning a long rehearsal time

The TL:DR is up there but if you cant be bothered to read one sentence then I shall sum it up here

give us consequences and multi choice endings

let us create our own kits

and a sort of open world for us in deep space.
